Pirates | Wilfredo Boscan bowled over

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 20:53:30 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wilfredo Boscan actually matched zeroes with San Francisco Giants SP Johnny Cueto for the first three innings Tuesday, June 21, in his first major league start. However, it went off the rails in the fourth inning when Boscan served up two homers, including a grand slam, and he eventually left without retiring a batter in the frame while giving up seven runs.

Fantasy Tip: Boscan was pitching well, but he just fell apart. If he gets another chance to start, hopefully it's not opposite a hot-hitting team and a potential Cy Young award winner. Avoid him in all but the deepest of NL-only fantasy leagues for now.

Pirates | Wilfredo Boscan recalled to face Giants

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 11:25:57 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wilfredo Boscan was recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis to start against the San Francisco Giants Tuesday, June 21. In a corresponding move, RP Curtis Partch was optioned to Indianapolis.

Fantasy Tip: Through 48 2/3 innings with Indianapolis, Boscan posted a 3.33 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP and 6.1 K/9, but this will be his first career start. The Giants are also an admirable opponent. View Boscan as a complete flier in all fantasy formats Tuesday.

Pirates | Wilfredo Boscan facing Giants Tuesday

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 14:24:40 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wilfredo Boscan is starting against the San Francisco Giants Tuesday, June 21.

Fantasy Tip: This will be Boscan's first career start, so he is nothing more than a flier in all fantasy formats Tuesday. Through 48 2/3 innings with Class AAA Indianapolis, Boscan posted a 3.33 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP and 6.1 K/9. There likely isn't a lot of fantasy upside here, and it might only be a one-and-done start for Boscan.

Pirates | Juan Nicasio placed on restricted list

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 07:16:51 -0700

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed SP Juan Nicasio on the restricted list so that he can return to the Dominican Republic to take care of a family matter. The team is likely to call up SP Wilfredo Boscan from Class AAA Indianapolis to start in his place Tuesday, June 21, against the San Francisco Giants. In other moves, the Pirates recalled RPs Curtis Partch and Jorge Rondon and INF Jason Rogers from Indianapolis, while designating RP Cory Luebke for assignment and optioning RP Rob Scahill to Indianapolis.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio is 5-6 with a 5.83 ERA through 13 appearances (12 starts) this season, with 27 walks and 65 strikeouts through 63 1/3 innings. Despite the high strikeout totals, the 29-year-old right-hander is in jeopardy of being demoted to the bullpen soon because of his struggles facing batters during the second and third times through the batting order. Boscan is 1-0 with a 2.92 ERA in five relief appearances at the MLB level this season but would make a risky play in DFS Tuesday.

Pirates | Juan Nicasio's spot in danger

Fri, 17 Jun 2016 11:49:56 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio was roughed up in his last start, and he might be moving to the bullpen soon. His next turn would come against the San Francisco Giants Tuesday, June 21, but the Pirates haven't announced their pitchers for that series. Nicasio is holding opponents to a .235 average the first time through the lineup with a 4.88 strikeout-to-walk ratio, but hitters are batting .326 and his strikeout-to-walk ratio moves to 1.15 the second time through. SPs Tyler Glasnow, Wilfredo Boscan and A.J. Schugel are options to replace Nicasio in the rotation if he's booted.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio was an early season sleeper target because of his impressive spring training work, but he's quickly faded and should only be rostered in NL-only leagues at this point. Top pitching prospect Jameson Taillon is already up, but Glasnow's addition would be welcomed immensely by fantasy owners everywhere. Stash Glasnow now if he's out there in your league.
