Oakland Raiders DT Sean Gilbert (groin) did not practice Thursday, Dec. 11, because of a sore groin that has sidelined him for nearly two weeks. It is very unlikely that he will play Sunday, Dec. 14, against the Baltimore Ravens. If Gilbert is unable to go, the Raiders will institute a three-man defensive tackle rotation with DLs Chris Cooper, Rod Coleman and Dana Stubblefield.

As an update to previous reports, ESPN's John Clayton reports Carolina Panthers DT Sean Gilbert took a $2.95 million pay cut on Tuesday, saving the team room under the salary cap. The team likely would have cut him had he not reworked his deal.

The Charlotte Observer reports the Carolina Panthers have restructured the contract of DT Sean Gilbert for the fourth consecutive year. He was scheduled to have a $10.2 million salary cap hit this year but will now stay with the Panthers. His agent, Gus Sunseri, wouldn't say how much cap room was cleared up by restructuring the contract but it's believed to be around $3 million.

Steve Reed reports for the Gaston Gazette, in addition to the previously reported TE Wesley Walls, the Carolina Panthers are also in the process of restructuring the contract of DT Sean Gilbert as well as a handful of other players, including WR Muhsin Muhammad. Gilbert is set to cost the team more than $10 million under this year’s cap.

The Charlotte Observer reports the Carolina Panthers are about $7.5 million above the salary cap. To get under the cap, the team is expected to cut players and restructure some contracts. DL Sean Gilbert, CB Doug Evans and CB Jimmy Hitchcock are all candidates to restructure their deals or be released. The team is likely to cut ties with Evans or Hitchcock, or possibly both. The Panthers should also get $1.1 million in cap relief from DE Jason Peter as the team will either release him or he'll retire.

The Charlotte Observer reports the Houston Texans are unlikely to select RB Tim Biakabutuka, of the Carolina Panthers, because of concerns of his ongoing recovery from a severely injured foot. Biakabutuka, as reported, took a physical with the Texans previously. The Panthers also exposed CBs Doug Evans and Jimmy Hitchcock, DL Sean Gilbert and LB Dean Wells. However, none of them are expected to be taken.

The Gaston Gazette reports Carolina Panthers DT Sean Gilbert has been confirmed as being on the team's five-man expansion list. He could be joined by high-priced CBs Doug Evans and Jimmy Hitchcock and possibly RB Tim Biakabutuka. Houston Texans coach Dom Capers brought Evans and Gilbert to Carolina in 1998, and drafted Biakabutuka in the first round back in 1996.

DE Mike Rucker, who is having a breakout season, and DT Brentson Buckner, who is under contract through 2002, seem certain to return. Rookie DT Kris Jenkins should be back too. DT Larry Chester is poised to become a free agent, but the team would like him back. DT Sean Gilbert and his $10.165 million cap hit next season may be thr biggest decision. Other tough choices will be DEs Chris Slade and Jay Williams. DE Jason Peter (neck) is expected to retire. Next year's draft is expected to be very deep with top-notch defensive linemen, which would help the Panthers.

The Associated Press reports Carolina Panthers DE Jay Williams barked at the coaching staff about his role with the team. He said he wants to play every down or play somewhere else. He was benched last week against the New York Jets and replaced at left defensive end by Sean Gilbert. "When they told me about the change last week, I felt like I was smacked in the face and spit on," Williams said. Defensive coordinator John Marshall said he has given Williams plenty of opportunities to prove himself. Panthers head coach George Seifert said that while he's upset Williams vented his feelings to the media, he was comfortable Williams' heart is in the right place.
