The Green Bay Packers have plenty of tight ends returning next season, which will make TE Jermichael Finley expendable. TEs Brandon Bostick, Andrew Quarless, Tom Crabtree, Ryan Taylor and DJ Williams will all be back. Quarless and Williams are much more effective blockers than Finley, too, and head coach Mike McCarthy is hoping for a more formidable running game in 2013. Scouts say Finley still is impressive and is able to stretch the field, but he doesn't put fear in opposing defenses like he once did. "But I didn't see him like a couple years ago where you worried about him all the time," one personnel director said. "I don't see that mismatch ability like I used to. Drops. Inconsistent routes. Not disciplined."
Other scouts note his inconsistency if he knows he's not being involved in the offense. Scouts see lack of flexibility with Finley, and one theory is that the stiffness in his hips and knees caused him to drop a large amount of passes. Finley has struggled to sink his hips and make sharp cuts to get open. "His routes aren't polished to that level," one scout said. "If you run a great route, you get open, but that doesn't seem to matter to him. He's playing more like he's on the playground."

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy indicated Friday, Dec. 16, that TE Ryan Taylor or one of the other tight ends might be moved to the backfield as an extra blocker in Week 15. Taylor was used as an H-back in college at North Carolina, and TE Tom Crabtree has also lined up in the backfield in the past. "I think they even have more flexibility than your traditional fullback body type," McCarthy said. "We'll obviously have all four of our tight ends up."

In the preseason game Friday, Aug. 26, against the Indianapolis Colts, Cratbree and Havner did not record any catches. Taylor posted three grabs for 24 yards and a score to lead the group, while Quarless recorded a 16-yard grab on his only touch. Williams also had an eight-yard catch.

The Green Bay Packers are deep at tight end and TE Jermichael Finley is the only lock for a roster spot at this point. TEs Andrew Quarless, DJ Williams, Ryan Taylor, Tom Crabtree and Spencer Havner are all options for roster spots. Letting Quarless go would hurt, as he's the team's second-best athlete at the position, and losing Crabtree would hurt, as he is the team's best blocking tight end.

He set a University of North Carolina single-season record for most receptions by a tight end with 36 catches. However, the team also drafted TE D.J. X. Williams and have an overabundance at the position, so Taylor's chances of making the 53-man roster appear slim, although he could also be used as a fullback.
