The Kansas City Chiefs have announced the team has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with free agent DT Shane Burton (Panthers). Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Burton has not played in the NFL since 2003, when he was with the Carolina Panthers.

Even if injured Carolina Panthers DT Brentson Buckner (hand, knee) is able to play Sunday, Oct. 12, against the Indianapolis Colts, look for reserve DLs Shane Burton and Kindall Moorehead to get more playing time. The Panthers have to be careful not to overuse Buckner. Burton is almost as good as Buckner and Moorehead has come on strong in recent weeks.

He will sign a three-year, $2.125 million contract. It includes a signing bonus of $100,000 and base salaries of $525,000 (2002), $700,000 (2003) and $800,000 (2004). In addition, Burton is owed $250,000 in guaranteed base salary for this year from the Jets.

The NY Times reports the New York Jets continue to work on a new contract for DT Shane Burton. Agent Drew Rosenhaus said the Jets wanted Burton back, but with a pay cut. He would count $1.17 million against the cap under his current deal. Rosenhaus said those talks would continue. The team also continues to work on new deals for S Damien Robinson and CB Ray Mickens. Robinson is due a $2.7 million signing bonus on Friday, and Mickens is due a $2 million bonus. "We've talked about it but we're getting nowhere," Mickens's agent, James Sexton, said. "We always do it at the last minute."
