The St. Louis Cardinals have placed 3B Matt Carpenter (oblique) on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right oblique. In a corresponding move, the team purchased C Steven Hill's contract from Triple-A Memphis.

He thought he had a pulled or torn oblique, but he is feeling better and showing no sign of that injury. Carpenter is scheduled to have an MRI Wednesday, May 23.

Carpenter started the game at first base with 1B Lance Berkman (calf) nursing a minor injury. Carpenter is the first Cardinals' rookie to get four hits in a game since 2B Daniel Descalso July 6, 2011, against the Cincinnati Reds. He's the first Cardinals' rookie to get five RBIs since 3B David Freese April 29, 2010, against the Atlanta Braves.
