Thu, 02 May 2013 15:30:34 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals 3B David Freese is back in the lineup Thursday, May 2, and 2B Matt Carpenter is hitting leadoff. Carpenter had three hits Wednesday, May 1, and Freese hasn't hit the ball out of the infield in 13 straight at-bats. He's hitless in his last 16 at-bats. Fantasy Tip: It's probably safest to keep Freese out of your fantasy lineup until he gets things going. By now, if you own Freese, you should have made alternate plans at the hot corner to deal with his slow start.
Mon, 29 Apr 2013 00:36:35 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals 2B Matt Carpenter (side) returned to the lineup Sunday, April 28, one day after side tightness forced him from a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. "I felt good, so I'm back in there," Carpenter said. "Obviously, I felt something [on Saturday], and it was an awkward swing. I was stretching the rest of the game, but I didn't think it was anything serious. I felt pretty good about it."
Tue, 26 Mar 2013 06:55:49 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals INF Matt Carpenter will start at third base with 3B David Freese (back) out. INF Daniel Descalso will start at second base.
Mon, 25 Mar 2013 09:54:52 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals 2B Matt Carpenter could open the season starting at third base if 3B David Freese (back) isn't ready for the start of the year. The team will have Freese play in minor league games for the rest of spring training in case they need to backdate a disabled list stint. Fantasy Tip: Carpenter has played extremely well this spring and has made a nice transition to second base. Even if Freese is ready for the season, Carpenter should see enough time to be worth a late selection in deep mixed leagues.
Fri, 15 Mar 2013 10:26:44 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals INF Matt Carpenter, this spring, has faced most of the challenges that a second baseman would face and conquered all of them, according to manager Mike Matheny. He had another good day in the field on Thursday, March 14, which included the clean execution of a couple of double plays. Meanwhile, Carpenter has remained strong with the bat, with a spring average of .394 following a double and a two-run triple in that contest. Fantasy Tip: It would seem that little stands between Carpenter and the OD second base job besides time. St. Louis' primary motivation is to get his bat in the lineup, and he's given them no reason not to continue with the experiment into the regular season. Carpenter is capable versus left-handed pitchers, too, so he has a reasonable shot at 450 to 500 plate appearances and could provide nice value in drafts or be a solid addition as depth from the waiver wire. Daniel Descalso may end up infringing upon Pete Kozma's time at shortstop.
Thu, 14 Mar 2013 11:04:23 -0700 St. Louis Cardinals SS Pete Kozma will serve as the team's starting shortstop this year. 2Bs Daniel Descalso and Matt Carpenter are both playing very well as they battle for playing time at second base.
Mon, 11 Mar 2013 13:59:12 -0700 The St. Louis Cardinals are happy with the transition that 2B Matt Carpenter has made with the move to second base, and he's in consideration for the starting job there. Carpenter hasn't committed an error in 44 innings this spring, and his footwork has become more natural. "I'm at the point now where if I were to be out there in a game I don't feel lost whatsoever," Carpenter said. "Am I going to win a Gold Glove over there? The odds of that are probably slim. But at the same time, do I feel like I can play an adequate second base? I do. I really do now. I'm comfortable at that position." Carpenter is battling with 2B Daniel Descalso, and the team expects the competition to spill into the regular season.
Wed, 13 Feb 2013 13:29:06 -0800 St. Louis Cardinals 2B Matt Carpenter, who is working with infielders coach Jose Oquendo to transition to second base, was told to watch New York Yankees 2B Robinson Cano and Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips to become a better infielder. "I kind of feel like a kid all over again, because you watch these other big leaguers and you try to be just like them," Carpenter said. "We're watching the unique techniques. Everybody does something different. We practice it all and try to figure out what I'm going to be the best at, and where I'm going to be most comfortable." The Cardinals have been impressed with Carpenter's work over the winter, but 2B Daniel Descalso will enter as the incumbent at the position.
Mon, 11 Feb 2013 10:45:35 -0800 St. Louis Cardinals infielders coach Jose Oquendo is impressed with the transition that 1B Matt Carpenter has made at second base this offseason. "It isn't that big of a surprise," Oquendo said. "Schumaker did great on routine plays. But Schumaker had a tough time reading balls off the bat because of being in the outfield. (Carpenter) has been an infielder (third base, first base) almost all his time. He can read balls a lot better." 2B Daniel Descalso is the projected starter at second base heading into the season.
Mon, 21 Jan 2013 11:53:58 -0800 St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter said he won't know how much progress he's made at second base until games start. "I don't even know yet," Carpenter said.
