Cardinals | Matt Carpenter ready for rehab

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 04:10:29 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter (oblique) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment this week. Carpenter, sidelined since July 6 with a strained right oblique, took swings in the outdoor batting cage and ran the bases Sunday, July 24.

Fantasy Tip: The team could sorely use his offense, but it won't rush him back for the sake of one or two victories. Carpenter should be activated almost immediately when he returns, but wait and see as always how injured players do in their return.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter doing baseball activities

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 14:21:50 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter (oblique) has been cleared to resume limited baseball activities, and he's been fielding groundballs and throwing to first.

Fantasy Tip: He was initially slated for a four- to six-week recovery timeline, but oblique injuries can often be tricky. It's a good sign he's already starting baseball activities, though. The All-Star third baseman should be stashed everywhere with his .298/.420/.568 slash line, 14 homers and 53 RBI. Jedd Gyorko is now seeing regular playing time on the infield and is mashing homers of late. Consider adding him off the waiver wire in the short term in deeper leagues for his power.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter talks recovery timeline

Mon, 11 Jul 2016 13:44:36 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Matt Carpenter (oblique) hopes to miss four weeks at the most with his Grade 2 oblique strain. "I'm really hoping that it's the three- to four-week (recovery), and it's four on the long end," Carpenter said Monday, July 11.

Fantasy Tip: The timeline would have Carpenter back in early August with approximately two months left to pad his already solid stats. He should be stashed in all fantasy formats, and you'll want to check back for updates on his recovery because oblique injuries can be finicky and linger.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter may miss 4-6 weeks

Thu, 07 Jul 2016 11:54:01 -0700

Updating earlier reports, St. Louis Cardinals 2B Matt Carpenter (oblique) said he may miss four to six weeks with a Grade 2 strain of his right oblique.

Fantasy Tip: The back end of the timetable would put Carpenter out until late August. Kolten Wong will see more playing time, but Greg Garcia, who was hitting .344 coming into Thursday, will see his share of time. Both players hit left-handed, though, so Wong will have to hit to stave off Garcia. Stash Carpenter in all formats. Wong has more tools than Garcia, but he has struggled all season. Wong and Garcia are only NL-only commodities for now. Wong is a deeper mixed option if you're thin at second base since Carpenter will be out a while.
