Cardinals | Matt Carpenter being more aggressive

Tue, 05 May 2015 11:55:38 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter is being more aggressive after having an awakening in last year's postseason. In 2013 and 2014, Carpenter took a total of 3,926 pitches, which was more than any other player in baseball, and he let 64.9% of pitches go by. This year, he's seen a small increase in his first-pitch swings (12.3%), and his overall swing percentage is 3.7% higher than it was in 2014, per FanGraphs. Carpenter has started the year with an excellent 1.036 OPS.

Fantasy Tip: Although Carpenter ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) was recently moved from leadoff to the second spot, his production hasn't really slowed down with his new aggressive approach. He left the game the other day due to dizziness, so he's worth keeping an eye on, but besides that, he's a strong FantasyScore play and likely will be for much of the season.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter right back in lineup

Mon, 04 May 2015 14:19:09 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter (head) is batting second and playing third base against the Chicago Cubs Monday, May 4. Carpenter left the game because he was feeling light-headed Sunday, May 3.

Fantasy Tip: Carpenter ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) is having an excellent season, and while he should be considered for FantasyScore usage nightly, Monday might not be the best spot for him. Carpenter is facing a lefty-lefty matchup against Travis Wood, although Carpenter is 8-for-30 with two home runs against Wood in his career.

Mon, 04 May 2015 04:37:02 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter (head) left his team's game Sunday, May 3, against the Pittsburgh Pirates after feeling light-headed.

Fantasy Tip: The odds are Carpenter ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has nothing serious to worry about, but keep an eye on any updates for his condition.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter thriving in two-hole

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 16:24:11 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter is 4-for-12 with six runs and three RBI over the three games since he was moved to second in the lineup Tuesday, April 28.

Fantasy Tip: Carpenter ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) is up to a .372/.438/.651 slash line for the season, and he hit his league-leading 13th double Thursday, April 30. The lineup swap has kick-started the Cardinals' offense, too, as they've scored 25 runs over the three games Carpenter has batted second. FantasyScore owners should look to Carpenter while he is hot, and especially in favorable matchups.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter slotted into two-hole

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 13:56:57 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Matt Carpenter is batting second against the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday, April 29, for a second consecutive game.

Fantasy Tip: Carpenter ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has a league-leading 12 doubles this season, and the move to the two-hole has little impact on his fantasy upside outside of helping his RBI totals and hurting his runs a touch. Expect him to stick there as long as the Cardinals are scoring runs in bunches like they did Tuesday, April 28.

Cardinals | Jon Jay hitting leadoff

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 13:50:04 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jon Jay is hitting in the leadoff spot Tuesday, April 28, against the Philadelphia Phillies. 3B Matt Carpenter, who traditionally has hit first, is now second.

Fantasy Tip: Jay ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) has a .233 batting average and isn't much of a base-stealer, but the Cardinals have a two-game losing streak so this might be a lineup shakeup. Jay doesn't hit for much average or power so you may want to look for better options.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter earns weekly honors

Mon, 20 Apr 2015 13:55:03 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter earned National League Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. He led the majors with seven doubles and hit .480 last week. He is also tops in the NL with 22 total bases and second with a .880 slugging percentage. He had five RBI and four runs scored last week. Carpenter has seven straight multi-hit games with at least one extra-base hit, which is the longest streak since Paul Molitor did it in 1991.

Fantasy Tip: Carpenter ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) is a great FantasyScore option right now while he's in a stride at the plate.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter tearing up homestand

Sun, 19 Apr 2015 17:24:09 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter hit a home run Sunday, April 19, against Cincinnati Reds SP Mike Leake. The homer was Carpenter's eighth extra-base hit of the Cardinals' seven-game homestand.

Fantasy Tip: Carpenter ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has gotten off to a very impressive start to the 2015 MLB season. Carpenter's slugging percentage was at .619 entering Sunday, nearly .200 points above his career average. Carpenter owners should be trying to sell high, but he'll remain an excellent FatasyScore option so long as he's on the hot streak.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter removed as precaution

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 15:40:44 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter (quadriceps) left the game early because of a right quadriceps contusion Wednesday, March 25, when he was hit by a pitch. Manager Mike Matheny said Carpenter was removed as a precaution.

Fantasy Tip: A bit of a down year in 2014 for Carpenter will have him as somewhat of a value in fantasy drafts in 2015. Look to take him in the later rounds as your third baseman. Hitting atop a solid lineup in St. Louis should continue to make him pretty productive across the board, minus power.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter trying to stay balanced

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 15:13:17 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter is looking for a balanced approach in the leadoff spot after he led the league in hits in 2013 and led the league in walks last season. "Now, it's finding the perfect balance to where I'm swinging the bat, I'm being aggressive, I'm trying to do damage, but at the same time, I'm a guy who can walk a lot, get on base and set the tone as a leadoff hitter. I think that's part of growing up as a baseball player. You learn and you adapt and you continue to try to figure out who you are as a hitter," Carpenter said. He became more aggressive in the playoffs, and that led to four home runs and four doubles in nine playoff games.

Fantasy Tip: Look to buy low on Carpenter as your fantasy third sacker in the later rounds of standard mixed leagues. Carpenter will never be a source of power at third base, but there is room for profit this year after a down year in 2014.
