xArizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said 1B Paul Goldschmidt will continue to see a majority of the playing time at first base even though 1B Lyle Overbay is batting .370 this season. Gibson said he can't see Overbay playing five or six games a week.

Arizona Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt took the day off Wednesday, April 18, and he was replaced by 1B Lyle Overbay. Goldschmidt is just 6-for-30 (.200) with two doubles and a home run. Overbay is hitting .286 (4-for-14) with two doubles and a home run.

Arizona Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt was hitless in four at-bats with a pair of strikeouts Wednesday, April 11, against the San Diego Padres, dropping his season average to .188. He has seven strikeouts in 18 plate appearances.

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Chris B. Young is hitting second in the team's opening day lineup Friday, April 6, after he hadn't hit No. 2 this spring at all and just once last season. Young has 274 at-bats in the second spot in his career. 1B Paul Goldschmidt is hitting fifth, 2B Aaron Hill is batting eighth and 3B Ryan Roberts is hitting seventh.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with Ps Sam Demel, Barry Enright, Dan Hudson, Zach Kroenke, Brett Lorin, Wade Miley, Yonata Ortega, Joe Paterson, Bryan Shaw and Michael Zagurski, Cs Konrad Schmidt and Craig Tatum, OFs Cole Gillespie and David Winfree and 1B Paul Goldschmidt on one-year deals. They also renewed the contracts of SPs Josh Collmenter and Ian Kennedy, RP David Hernandez and OF Gerardo Parra. These moves mean that all players on the 40-man roster are now under contract for the 2012 season.

Arizona Diamondbacks 3B Geoff Blum and 1B Lyle Overbay are on the bubble when it comes to winning a bench spot this spring. INF Willie Bloomquist, SS Stephen Drew (ankle), 1B Paul Goldschmidt, 2B Aaron Hill, INF John McDonald and 3B Ryan Roberts are locks. It all depends on if Drew will be ready for opening day whether another spot will open up.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are heavy on utility infielders heading into 2012 with IFs John McDonald, Willie Bloomquist and Geoff Blum. McDonald could start at shortstop if SS Stephen Drew (ankle) is not ready for the start of the season. Bloomquist could serve as the fourth outfielder and share time in left field with OF Gerardo Parra. Blum would likely complement 3B Ryan Roberts at third base and 1B Paul Goldschmidt at first.

Arizona Diamondbacks 3B Ryan Wheeler continues to work hard at third base, trying to take an alternate route to the majors since first base has plenty of organizational depth. "First base is pretty clogged up right now, especially with (1B Paul Goldschmidt) just getting there," Wheeler said. He has been working in the Arizona Fall League, taking grounders at third during batting practice.

Arizona Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt made his third straight start in Game 4 of the National League Division Series Wednesday, Oct. 5, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He went 2-for-3 with walk, stolen base and two runs scored. He is 5-for-11 (.455) with two homers, six RBIs, four runs scored and a steal in three games during the series.

Arizona Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBIs in Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Goldschmidt's five RBIs tied a franchise postseason record. He did not start Game 1, but he has swatted homers in each of the past two games of the series.
