Wed, 01 May 2013 20:24:49 -0700 New York Yankees SP David Phelps failed to cement his spot as the No. 5 starter Wednesday, May 1, against the Houston Astros, as he allowed four runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Mon, 29 Apr 2013 12:59:46 -0700 New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova's (triceps) inflammation in his right triceps isn't believed to be serious, and the team is hoping that he can return from the disabled list when eligible May 11. Nova said he had pain in his elbow when he threw his curveball, so he thought his injury might be structural. No further tests are planned for Nova. Fantasy Tip: Since Nova should only miss a few starts, David Phelps should only attract interest from those playing in AL-only universes. However, if Phelps were to pitch well in his audition, he could possibly take Nova's rotation post. That's purely speculation, however.
Sat, 27 Apr 2013 10:05:35 -0700 New York Yankees RP David Phelps was inserted into the starting rotation, and P Vidal Nuno will head to the bullpen. SS Derek Jeter (ankle) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Fri, 26 Apr 2013 20:42:02 -0700 New York Yankees RP David Phelps replaced an injured SP Ivan Nova (elbow) after two-plus innings Friday, April 26, against the Toronto Blue Jays. He allowed just one earned run, two hits and two walks with a career-high nine strikeouts over four innings. Fantasy Tip: Phelps is the obvious choice to replace Nova, if he is forced to miss any time due to his elbow injury. Even so, Phelps would only be worth a look as a back-end rotation option in AL-only fantasy leagues.
Tue, 02 Apr 2013 12:39:14 -0700 New York Yankees SP Phil Hughes (back) will pitch for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Saturday, April 6, meaning SP David Phelps will make the start against the Detroit Tigers. Fantasy Tip: Hughes shouldn't be too far off from joining the rotation unless he suffers a setback during his rehab. Phelps is an option for deep AL-only leagues, but starting him against Detroit might not be the smartest decision.
Wed, 27 Mar 2013 13:24:03 -0700 New York Yankees SP Phil Hughes (back) will open the season on the disabled list, and he's expected to miss his first turn in the rotation. SPs Ivan Nova and David Phelps are both likely to begin the season in the rotation as a result. Hughes will pitch in a minor league game Monday, April 1. Fantasy Tip: Nova and Phelps may receive a couple of starts each in April and are worth considering if you need rotation help to start the year in AL-only formats.
Tue, 12 Mar 2013 23:47:02 -0700 New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova and SP David Phelps are competing for the fifth spot in the starting rotation. If SP Phil Hughes starts the season unable to pitch for whatever reason then Nova and Phelps would take the bottom two spots. Otherwise, Hughes slots fourth and either Nova or Phelps would go fifth.
Fri, 08 Feb 2013 12:58:35 -0800 New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova, who will compete with SP David Phelps for the No. 5 starting rotation spot, could have the leg up in the battle, according to pitching coach Larry Rothschild. "You look at Nova and he's had a lot of wins the last two years," Rothschild said. "My job going into spring training is to get him back to where he should be and pitching the way he's capable of, and the rest will take care of itself." Rothschild said Nova had a few bad months because he kept going with a pitch even though he wasn't having success using it.
Tue, 05 Feb 2013 18:28:30 -0800 New York Yankees P David Phelps said Tuesday, Feb. 5, that he hopes to be a part of the team's rotation in 2013. "I would like to. Anything could happen," Phelps said. "We have seven days until pitchers and catchers report. I'm just going to go in and try to help the team, whatever role that may be." Fantasy Tip: If Phelps were able to win a job in the rotation somehow, he would be a serviceable fantasy option in AL-only play and deeper mixed formats, but he is likely a longshot to win a job at this point. It would likely take a horrendous spring from SP Ivan Nova, or a long-term injury to a starter, to get Phelps into the rotation picture.
Tue, 27 Nov 2012 06:13:01 -0800 New York Yankees SPs Ivan Nova and David Phelps are likely to battle for one spot in the rotation in spring training.
