The New England Patriots could use upgrades at free safety, cornerback, center, offensive tackle, defensive end, linebacker and wide receiver during the free-agent market and/or NFL Draft. While S Patrick Chung has proven to be a hard-hitting option from the safety spot, he is not an asset in pass coverage. At cornerback, the team expects CB Devin McCourty to bounce back in 2012 while CB Ras-I Dowling will have a bright future with improved technique in coverage. CB Kyle Arrington is viewed as a better backup than starter.

New England Patriots CB Ras-I Dowling (hip) underwent surgery this offseason to clean up his hip injury. He was originally going to allow his hip to heal without surgery but the surgery gives him a better chance to avoid re-injuring his hip. He is on schedule in his recovery from the surgery.

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots CB Ras-I Dowling (hip) recently underwent an MRI which showed a torn tendon in his leg that resulted in pain in his hip. The injury did not get any better during the bye week and affected him after a day of practice. Dowling will not need surgery to repair the tendon.
