San Francisco 49ers DL Quinton Dial, the team's fifth-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, is no lock to make the roster out of training camp. The team has DE Cornellius Carradine, DL Glenn Dorsey, DL Ray McDonald and DL Justin Smith as locks to make the roster, and DL Ian Williams looking good for a backup job since the team gave him a $1 million contract extension. That leaves Dial, DL Demarcus Dobbs and DL Will Tukuafu battling for jobs.

Wesley Spencer, agent for San Francisco 49ers DT Demarcus Dobbs (knee), said Dobbs is ahead of schedule in his rehab from a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate ligament. Dobbs should be ready for training camp but it is not known exactly when he will be able to return.

The San Francisco 49ers are working out free-agent LB Matt McCoy (Seahawks) Tuesday, Dec. 11, and they could sign him to their active roster. DL Demarcus Dobbs (knee) was injured in Week 14. McCoy was a special teams standout with the Seattle Seahawks. The team is awaiting MRI results on Dobbs' knee.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said DT Demarcus Dobbs is expected to play Week 13. Dobbs did not play Week 13 because he was arrested Friday, Nov. 30, for marijuana possession and suspicion of driving under the influence.

San Francisco 49ers DT Demarcus Dobbs is expected to see a significant amount of playing time at tight end in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 18, because of the injury to TE Delanie Walker (knee). If Dobbs continues to show he can play at tight end, the team may decide to keep only Walker and TE Vernon Davis on the final roster.

San Francisco 49ers TE Nate Byham (knee) is back after a season-ending injury, and he is trying to hold off TE Konrad Reuland for the third tight end job. Byham is viewed as more of a blocker than a receiver, while Reuland is considered to have much better hands. Byham's chances of making the roster might also hinge on how well DL Demarcus Dobbs does at the tight end position. Dobbs, who has shown an ability to block, would make Byham rather redundant.

The San Francisco 49ers may consider keeping only two tight ends on their final roster if DL Demarcus Dobbs shows the ability to be a blocking tight end in addition to being a defensive lineman.
