Packers | Searching for lead back

Fri, 18 Jan 2013 10:17:55 -0800

The Green Bay Packers feel the need to find a lead back heading into the 2013 season, and that man may not be on the current roster. The Packers shuffled through as many as six running backs this season and weren't satisfied with any of their options. Among the unrestricted free agents they could target this offseason include St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson, Miami Dolphins RB Reggie Bush, Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones and New York Jets RB Shonn Greene. Green Bay would likely be interested in Jackson in the secondary market because he'll be 30 this year.

The Packers had some success using RBs DuJuan Harris, Alex Green and James Starks, but only enough to occasionally draw an opponent's safety into the box. "If you're running the ball and they're closing the middle of the field and bringing an extra guy down, it obviously plays to our strengths as a pass group," running backs coach Alex Van Pelt said. "There were times when I thought we forced their hand and they had to stop it, but we'd obviously like to be more consistent and more productive from start to finish." Harris has plenty of potential, but his lack of size led him to wear down at the end. Green Bay is unlikely to take another chance with RB Cedric Benson and the team might not be willing to pay Starks $1.323 million given his injury history.

Packers | DuJuan Harris trying to get accustomed to cold weather

Wed, 02 Jan 2013 14:13:56 -0800

Green Bay Packers running backs coach Alex Van Pelt said RB DuJuan Harris practiced without sleeves Wednesday, Jan. 2, to try and get comfortable playing in cold weather. Van Pelt said ball security could be a factor in the cold weather but Harris has big hands for his size which should help in that area. RB Ryan Grant could receive more carries in the Wild Card playoff game because he has played in cold weather playoff games before. Van Pelt said RB Alex Green will be available to the coaches whenever they need him to play.

Alex Green, I was surprised that he wasn't available for Tennessee just based on the way that process, the result of the process, so he'll definitely be available."

Packers | Alex Green questionable

Fri, 21 Dec 2012 12:20:34 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green (concussion) did not practice Friday, Dec. 21, and is questionable for Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: If Green doesn't play, expect Ryan Grant and DuJuan Harris to split the running back workload against the Tennessee Titans. The Titans present a nice matchup on the ground, but Green Bay's pass-first offense likely relegates them to bench options in most leagues, especially with a fantasy title on the line.

Thu, 20 Dec 2012 16:42:32 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) is dealing with a bone bruise in his right knee, and head coach Mike McCarthy plans to have him back for the playoffs. "Yeah, it's a lot better," Starks said. "Just how I was bent, when you look at it, it looked a lot worse. So I just thank God for being able to possibly come back and do well. So no real, serious bad injuries." Starks hasn't been able to practice but he's been staying busy in the weight room. In his absence, the Packers have gone with a combination of RBs Alex Green, DuJuan Harris and Ryan Grant.

Packers | Alex Green might be primary RB going forward

Tue, 04 Dec 2012 19:39:54 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green might be the top running back option on the team's roster if RB James Starks (knee) is lost for the season due to a knee injury. An NFL source said Tuesday, Dec. 4, that the knee injury Starks suffered in Week 13 might be serious enough to end his season.

Fantasy Tip: If Green is available off the waiver wire, he should be plucked immediately. He ran 12 times for 58 yards in Week 13 against the Minnesota Vikings, and is worth a look as an RB3 or flex play in most fantasy leagues. Everyone can use a little depth at this juncture of the fantasy season, even if it simply keeps him away from one of your competitors looking to fill a need.

Packers | Plan to use hot hand at RB

Mon, 03 Dec 2012 19:13:44 -0800

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy indicated Monday, Dec. 3, that he plans to ride the hot hand at running back going forward during games. "We'll stay the course, probably. If you feel one's going a little better than the other, we'll lean that way," McCarthy said. In Week 13, RB James Starks carried 15 times for 66 yards and a touchdown, while RB Alex Green had 12 totes for 58 yards.

Packers | Alex Green more productive as a backup

Wed, 21 Nov 2012 05:06:24 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green appears better suited to play more of a backup role than a lead one. As the lead back for three weeks this season, Green averaged only 2.8 yards per carry; however, in a complementary role in Week 9 against the Arizona Cardinals, Green had 53 yards on 11 carries. There should be a place for him within the team's offense.

Packers | HC blames himself for not involving Alex Green

Wed, 21 Nov 2012 04:53:33 -0800

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said he should have used more of a committee approach at running back in Week 11 by using RB Alex Green more. RB James Starks had 25 carries in the game while Green had none. "As far as our running game, we left a lot of production on the field was my conclusion after going through the tape and going through the grading sessions with the coaches," McCarthy said. "And frankly, Alex Green not getting carries was a poor performance by myself managing how we were running the ball. We'll continue forward working both James and Alex and get those guys ready in our preparation for the Giants."

Packers | Will still mix and match at RB

Tue, 20 Nov 2012 16:13:51 -0800

The Green Bay Packers still plan to mix in RB Alex Green with RB James Starks heading forward, despite the fact that Starks saw his heaviest workload of the year in Week 11 with 25 carries for 74 yards. Green had no carries and was only in for six offensive snaps. The Packers felt Starks left some yards on the field. "And frankly, Alex Green not getting carries was a poor performance by myself managing how we were running the ball. We'll continue forward working both James and Alex and get those guys ready in our preparation for the Giants," head coach Mike McCarthy said. Two weeks ago, Green rushed 11 times and Starks had 17 carries.

Packers | RBs starting to get roles

Thu, 08 Nov 2012 12:04:46 -0800

Green Bay Packers running backs coach Alex Van Pelt indicated the team has roles for their running backs moving forward. The team believes RB James Starks is best used when they are in their normal offense while RB Alex Green is better when the team uses the no-huddle offense. FB John Kuhn (hamstring) will be the third-down back once he returns from his hamstring injury. The team could also have Cedric Benson (foot) back for the final four games of the season if he comes off the Injured Reserve/Designated to Return list when eligible.

Packers | Alex Green needs to be patient

Fri, 02 Nov 2012 10:14:06 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green needs to be more patient with the team's zone-blocking scheme, according to running backs coach Alex Van Pelt. "Slow it down," Van Pelt said. "He's such a fast-twitch guy that a lot of times the blocks haven't quite developed yet. But we're getting there. Just to slow our pace down, tempo, just track down, and then once he sees it, accelerate and explode through the hole." Green has just a 2.4-yards-per-carry average in the last three games on 64 carries.

Packers | James Starks to see touches

Fri, 02 Nov 2012 08:30:55 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks is expected to receive a share of touches this week due to RB Alex Green's struggles. Starks was expected to see more action last week, but he was limited due to the stomach flu. Green is expected to be the primary passing-down back. FB John Kuhn (hamstring) appears unlikely to play again this week.

Packers | Alex Green to remain the starter

Tue, 30 Oct 2012 12:50:03 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green will remain the team's starting running back over RB James Starks due to his breakaway speed. The team would rather continue on with Green as the lead back rather than trade for Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams or St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson, too. General manager Ted Thompson prefers to save salary cap space so he can work on contracts for LB Clay Matthews, DT B.J. Raji and QB Aaron Rodgers.

Packers | Alex Green doesn't do a lot

Sun, 28 Oct 2012 15:48:44 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green carried 22 times for 54 yards in Week 8 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he added four receptions for 28 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Green has struggled running the football in three games since taking over for the injured RB Cedric Benson. He has carried 62 times for just 154 yards, or 2.5 yards per carry. At that rate, he isn't even worth using as an RB3 or 'flex' player.

Packers | Mike McCarthy not happy with running game

Tue, 23 Oct 2012 10:10:03 -0700

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said he wasn't happy with the running game in Week 7 against the St. Louis Rams, in which RB Alex Green ran for only 35 yards on 20 carries. "I wasn't real happy with the production in the run game," McCarthy said. "I thought we left too many hard yards on the field. There were too many 1-, 2-yard runs that should have been hardball 3-, 4-, 5-yard runs. We need to improve that aspect of our offense."

Packers | Will go with hot hand at RB

Thu, 11 Oct 2012 06:17:10 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green will get the first carry in the team's Week 6 game. After that, however, head coach Mike McCarthy said he will go with the "hot hand" between Green, RB James Starks and RB Brandon Saine. All three running backs received first-team reps in practice Wednesday, Oct. 10. "Alex and James both got reps today and so did Brandon Saine," McCarthy said. "The first carry will be Alex Green. He's a little farther ahead than James is right now and that's the way we'll go. But we have three halfbacks and we'll utilize all three of them."

Fantasy Tip: Owners must take a wait-and-see approach when it comes to the Packers' backfield at this point as it appears to be a fluid situation. Green may be the man moving forward, but keep a close eye on how the carries are distributed in Week 6 to get a better idea.

Packers | James Starks may get his chance

Tue, 09 Oct 2012 10:50:53 -0700

The Green Bay Packers are considering going to RB James Starks, who has been inactive for the first five games, with RB Cedric Benson (foot) out at least eight weeks. RB Alex Green had a big run in the team's Week 5 games, but the team is worried about his protection issues. "Alex did some good things, and there's some things he'll definitely learn from," head coach Mike McCarthy said. "He obviously had the big run there, did a great job there and a nice job on the trap play. But there's some protection opportunities that we need to clean up and the course of certain runs. (He's) a young guy that took advantage of an opportunity, and this will be an opportunity for him and James and Brandon to play this week against Houston." RB Brandon Saine could also be mixed in.
