Texans | T.J. Yates placed on IR

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 13:47:15 -0800

Houston Texans QB T.J. Yates (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Dec. 21, after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Week 15.

Fantasy Tip: If Brian Hoyer is healthy, he'll be the starting quarterback this weekend; if he's not, then Brandon Weeden would probably be the leading candidate to start. Hoyer would be worth considering, but Weeden should be avoided. Stay tuned.

Texans | T.J. Yates has torn ACL

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 10:49:33 -0800

Houston Texans QB T.J. Yates (knee) has been diagnosed with torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Brian Hoyer and Brandon Weeden will be candidates to start for the final two weeks of the regular season, so owners should keep an eye out on the situation to see which player starts. Both quarterbacks have played well at times this season but they are not great fantasy options.

Texans | T.J. Yates out for the season

Sun, 20 Dec 2015 12:54:28 -0800

Houston Texans QB T.J. Yates (knee) is believed to have suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during the team's Week 15 game and will miss the rest of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Brian Hoyer and Brandon Weeden are options to start in Week 16 depending on how Hoyer recovers from his concussion. Neither are strong option for fantasy owners and should be passed over in most leagues.

Texans | T.J. Yates, Cecil Shorts out

Sun, 20 Dec 2015 11:44:36 -0800

Houston Texans QB T.J. Yates (knee) and WR Cecil Shorts (groin) have been ruled out for the rest of the game in Week 15 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: With Yates and Shorts out, Brandon Weeden and DeAndre Hopkins could become the new hookup for the Texans. Nate Washington and Ryan Griffin may also see more targets. Brian Hoyer may return next week, though, so stay tuned to Houston's quarterback situation.

Texans | T.J. Yates injures knee

Sun, 20 Dec 2015 11:24:44 -0800

Houston Texans QB T.J. Yates (knee) went to the locker room with a knee injury in Week 15 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: This could be a serious injury for Yates, but nothing is official yet. With Yates out, Brandon Weeden takes over as the Texans' starting quarterback. This is an avoidable situation as long as Brian Hoyer isn't starting.

Texans | Brian Hoyer ruled out

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 10:41:43 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 15 against the Indianapolis Colts. QB T.J. Yates will start the game.

Fantasy Tip: Yates ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) has been adequate in guiding the Texans to several wins this year, but his fantasy ceiling is limited. You should downgrade all of Houston's receivers as a result, but DeAndre Hopkins remains a must-start in traditional leagues. Indy is a great matchup for quarterbacks this year, but Yates is still a dart throw in daily formats.

Texans | Brian Hoyer doubtful for Week 15

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 13:24:00 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer (concussion, neck, wrist) is doubtful to play in Week 15 against the Indianapolis Colts after he suffered his second concussion of the season in Week 14, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. Hoyer was sacked five times against the New England Patriots. He suffered memory loss when he had a concussion against the Cincinnati Bengals Nov. 16. QB T.J. Yates is being prepared to start against the Colts.

Fantasy Tip: The Colts are one of the best fantasy matchups for quarterbacks, and although Yates will be dirt cheap on FantasyScore, he's still too risky to trust. Houston's receiving game will take a hit with Yates in there, although DeAndre Hopkins is still a must-start in traditional leagues.

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 08:54:42 -0800

Houston Texans QB T.J. Yates is preparing to start Sunday, Dec. 20, with QB Brian Hoyer (concussion) sidelined with a concussion, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Yates would face off against the Indianapolis Colts, but he doesn't have much upside in fantasy.

Texans | T.J. Yates remains No. 2 quarterback

Sun, 22 Nov 2015 22:57:11 -0800

Houston Texans QB T.J. Yates led the team to a second straight win in Week 11, but head coach Bill O'Brien said Sunday, Nov. 22, that when QB Brian Hoyer (concussion) is healthy Yates will head back to the bench. "Hoyer is our starter," O'Brien said. "When he comes back, when he's healthy, he'll come back in there and we've spoken to T.J. about that."

Fantasy Tip: Yates faces a very favorable matchup in Week 12 against the New Orleans Saints, should Hoyer has a setback or not be able to go.

Texans | T.J. Yates to start in Week 11

Fri, 20 Nov 2015 16:37:31 -0800

Houston Texans QB T.J. Yates will start in Week 11 against the New York Jets with QB Brian Hoyer (concussion) sidelined.

Fantasy Tip: The Jets defense has been beat in recent weeks, but Yates ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) should still not inspire any confidence in daily gamers in his first start of the year. Stay away.

Texans | Brian Hoyer unlikely to start

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 15:12:27 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer (concussion) is unlikely to start in Week 11 against the New York Jets, according to sources, which means QB T.J. Yates is expected to start.

Fantasy Tip: The Jets defense has faltered of late, but if Yates ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) indeed starts, you'll need to downgrade Houston's offensive weapons -- mainly DeAndre Hopkins ($8,800, 17.6% of cap). Don't get cute and think of using Yates as a deep sleeper, either.

Texans | T.J. Yates leads team to win

Mon, 16 Nov 2015 21:41:08 -0800

Houston Texans QB T.J. Yates completed five of his 11 pass attempts for 69 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the Week 10 win against the Cincinnati Bengals, subbing for the injured QB Brian Hoyer (concussion).

Fantasy Tip: Yates has something against the Cincinnati Bengals, as nearly all of his career highlights have come against the Stripes. It's uncertain if he will be needed in Week 11 against the Arizona Cardinals in place of Hoyer, but he is not a recommended FantasyScore option if he does get the nod.

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 10:00:56 -0700

Updating a previous item, the Atlanta Falcons are working out free-agent QB Rex Grossman (Redskins) Tuesday, Aug. 25. Yates and Sean Renfree have failed to do much during training camp.

Falcons | T.J. Yates has to earn spot

Sun, 16 Aug 2015 06:10:46 -0700

Atlanta Falcons QB T.J. Yates knows he has to earn the backup quarterback job behind QB Matt Ryan. Yates is in an open competition with QB Sean Renfree. "We are competing at every position every single day. I have to earn my spot on this team, like everybody else," Yates said Saturday, Aug. 15.

Fantasy Tip: In Friday's preseason opener, Yates completed 9-of-15 passes for 105 yards and an interception, while Renfree completed 6-of-7 passes for 68 yards. Yates has appeared in 14 regular season games in his career, but he hasn't thrown a touchdown pass since his rookie season in 2011. Renfree has never appeared in a regular season NFL game.

Falcons | Strong outing for T.J. Yates

Fri, 29 Aug 2014 00:23:23 -0700

Atlanta Falcons QB T.J. Yates threw for two touchdowns and 243 yards in his team's 24-14 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fantasy Tip: Yates had thrown 39 percent of his passes for completions prior to this outing, but this was a strong performance and could vault him into the No. 2 slot behind Matt Ryan. Yates carries little fantasy value unless he makes the roster and Ryan gets hurt, so watch the next couple days to see if he survives roster cuts.

Texans | T.J. Yates released

Tue, 17 Jun 2014 14:53:48 -0700

Texans | Still no official starting quarterback

Fri, 13 Jun 2014 12:00:04 -0700

The Houston Texans finished organized team activities Friday, June 13, without a starting quarterback. QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, T.J. Yates and rookie Tom Savage are competing for three roster spots. Fitzpatrick, who is expected to start Week 1, had a "decent offseason" and has done well picking up a new offense, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. Savage hasn't been ruled out for the No. 2 position.

Fantasy Tip: Whoever ends up being the starter in Houston won't be worthy of starter status on your fantasy team. He'll be a bye-week replacement at best.

Texans | Case Keenum, T.J. Yates could be on bubble

Mon, 09 Jun 2014 11:05:25 -0700

The Houston Texans likely would release QB Case Keenum or QB T.J. Yates if they decide to take only three quarterbacks to training camp, because QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tom Savage appear to be locks for the roster.

Texans | QB competition wide open

Tue, 27 May 2014 14:37:25 -0700

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien is saying that right now, after the first day of organized team activities Tuesday, May 27, the quarterback competition is wide open between QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, T.J. Yates and Tom Savage. The team will look to make sure all of the quarterback repetitions are equal for all four quarterbacks, but they'll look to narrow the focus as the season approaches.

Fantasy Tip: Realistically, this job will come down to Fitzpatrick and Keenum, or whoever performs better this summer and in training camp. Neither QB would be more than a matchup play as a weak QB2, though.

Texans | Matt Schaub very sore

Wed, 16 Oct 2013 13:44:13 -0700

Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub (ankle) is very sore and his leg remains swollen Wednesday, Oct. 16. He hasn't been ruled out for Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs, and the team may wait until game day to announce a starter. QBs T.J. Yates and Case Keenum took first-team repetitions Wednesday. Offensive coordinator Rick Dennison said Keenum has come a long way since his rookie year, and he seems to be in line to start against KC.

Fantasy Tip: Although Houston won't acknowledge it yet, it seems Schaub is a long shot to play this weekend. Yates and Keenum aren't worthy of consideration for your fantasy squad.

Texans | Matt Schaub heard ankle pop

Tue, 15 Oct 2013 09:46:42 -0700

Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub (ankle) said he heard his ankle pop when he was injured during the team's Week 6 game. "It popped and must've come out and come back in place. … It could have been drastically worse," said Schaub, who was forced to leave the game and was replaced by backup QB T.J. Yates. Schaub said his ailment affects his ankle and foot, and he's still hoping to play against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7. If he can't go, either Yates or QB Case Keenum will suit up.

Fantasy Tip: It doesn't sound promising right now that Schaub will be able to return in time to take on one of the better defenses in the NFL. That tough task will likely fall to Yates, instead. If you own the Chiefs defense, you're sitting pretty.

Texans | Will be willing to bench Matt Schaub

Thu, 10 Oct 2013 19:30:14 -0700

The Houston Texans will be willing to bench QB Matt Schaub if he continues to turn the ball over because it would not be fair to the other players to keep him on the field.

Fantasy Tip: Schaub has the perfect matchup this weekend against the St. Louis Rams in order to get back on track. However, don't expect a monster day from him. The running game should have success and take some pressure off his shoulders. T.J. Yates doesn't offer very much upside at all if they go in that direction.
