Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports the Miami Dolphins are expected to clear about $8.5 million in cap space for 2005, once they guarantee a $5 million roster bonus to WR Chris Chambers. If Chambers' 2005 base salary stays at $1.35 million, the guaranteed bonus would lower Chambers' cap number from $7.35 million to $3.35 million. With Chambers' bonus and the recent releases of FS Arturo Freeman and DE Jay Williams, the Dolphins will have cleared $8.5 million for 2005.

Williams was expected to earn $900,000 in base salary along with a $400,000 roster bonus. The team has offered to re-sign Williams for the NFL minimum of $765,000. Williams' agent, Ron Del Duca, has asked the team to release his client by Tuesday, Feb. 22. If the Dolphins release Williams, the team will save $1.35 million against the cap.

Steve Reed reports for the Gaston Gazette Friday's trade of DE Jay Williams saved the Carolina Panthers about $1.3 million in salary cap room. They will use the money to sign their three remaining unsigned draft picks. GM Marty Hurney said the team is making significant progress in negotiations with first-round draft pick DE Julius Peppers, second-round pick RB DeShaun Foster and fifth-rounder QB Randy Fasani. Hurney also said all three contracts may be finalized by the middle of next week.

The move doesn't guarantee Williams a spot on the roster and the team still could release him after training camp. The team did promise Williams a chance to win a job in camp. Updating an ongoing story, the Gaston Gazette reports Carolina Panthers DE Jay Williams plans to skip the final two weeks of the team's voluntary coaching sessions unless the team restructures his contract by Friday. Agent Ron Del Duca said Williams will "shut it down" unless a new deal is reached by Friday. Williams and his agent want the Panthers to either rework Williams’ contract, trade him or release him. Del Duca is worried the Panthers will not release him until later this summer, which will make it more difficult for him to land a job with another team. Williams has been practicing so far this week and he is expected to work again today.
