Patriots | Shane Vereen in line for more work?

Sun, 27 Jan 2013 19:08:45 -0800

New England Patriots RB Shane Vereen has shown flashes of athleticism, speed and pass-catching ability, even though he played just 13 percent of the snaps in 2012. Fellow RB Danny Woodhead is set to become a free agent, so Vereen could be in line for a larger role next season if Woodhead is not brought back.

Mon, 14 Jan 2013 05:00:48 -0800

New England Patriots RB Shane Vereen played in 38 of the team's 66 offensive snaps in the AFC Divisional Round. In the regular season, Vereen had been averaging 9.8 snaps per game; however, his increase in playing time came after RB Danny Woodhead (thumb) was knocked out on the first play with a thumb injury. Patriots | Stevan Ridley wasn't on the field much

Wed, 19 Dec 2012 14:06:00 -0800

New England Patriots RB Stevan Ridley was on the field for only 19 of 96 offensive snaps in Week 15, but that was mainly due to the fact that New England was down multiple scores and RB Danny Woodhead was the better option with the team needing to pass more often. RB Shane Vereen was on the field for only one play in the second quarter, fumbled, and was benched. RB Brandon Bolden has been used strictly on special teams since he returned from injury.

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had good things to say about RB Shane Vereen after he ran for a career-high 49 yards on eight carries against the New York Jets in Week 7. He also averaged an impressive 6.1 yards per carry. "Shane is a smart kid. I think he has a good understanding of the game: the running game, passing game, pass protection, space plays, where to be, how to get open and find space, that kind of thing," said Belichick. "He's an elusive guy, he has good balance, has good playing strength for his size, not the biggest guy but he has good playing strength." Belichick indicated that he would like to give Vereen more opportunities in the future.

Patriots | Shane Vereen trying to make most of opportunities

Fri, 10 Aug 2012 08:37:51 -0700

New England Patriots RB Shane Vereen had a nice showing Thursday, Aug. 9, against the New Orleans Saints. He rushed 11 times for 64 yards during the second half of the game, picking up 73 total yards on the team's 97-yard touchdown drive. Vereen also caught two passes for 17 yards and served as the team's third-down back later in the game when rookie Brandon Bolden was worked in on first and second down. "You are only given so many opportunities. To be able to go out there and be able to play well as an offense - we still have a ton, a ton to work on and get better with - but for that little drive I felt like the offense, we did pretty well," Vereen said.

Patriots | Stevan Ridley looking the part of top back

Tue, 31 Jul 2012 09:01:20 -0700

New England Patriots RB Stevan Ridley continues to look like the back most likely to handle the majority of the running back workload. RB Shane Vereen, also a second-year back, is still trying to work his way into a groove. Veteran Danny Woodhead appears as if he will continue to be the team's change-of-pace back.

Patriots | Stevan Ridley has leg up in early competition?

Sat, 28 Jul 2012 17:14:52 -0700

New England Patriots RB Stevan Ridley has been carrying the load early on in training camp, seeing first-team reps. The situation at running back hasn't been clearly defined, but Ridley saw the most snaps as the No. 1 back Friday, July 27. RB Shane Vereen also saw some first-team reps late in practice, and the battle for the starting job is expected to primarily be between those two players.

Patriots | Joseph Addai on roster bubble already?

Mon, 23 Jul 2012 20:20:44 -0700

New England Patriots RB Joseph Addai was reportedly not very impressive during the team's offseason program, and he might not be on the roster bubble. It sounds like Addai needs a strong training camp and preseason if he wants to leapfrog RBs Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and Danny Woodhead, among others.

Patriots | Questions at running back

Thu, 21 Jun 2012 23:45:00 -0700

It appears the New England Patriots will rely on second-year RBs Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley as their top runners in 2012. However, the pair has more questions surrounding them than answers right now. Vereen had just 15 carries as a rookie because of injury problems and Ridley had fumble problems in consecutive games last year, which led to a quick hook from the field. The team has veteran RBs Joseph Addai and Danny Woodhead on roster and they may, as reported, have interest in re-signing RB Sammy Morris.

Patriots | Plenty of questions at RB

Sun, 17 Jun 2012 19:04:36 -0700

The New England Patriots must rely on their running game this season to complement the passing attack. However, it is still very uncertain who will carry the load heading into training camp. RBs Joseph Addai, Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and Danny Woodhead combine for nine career starts for the Patriots. None have stood out on their own in offseason workouts, and the team might be hoping for strength by committee. "We're not really focused on who's going to be the guy or anything like that; we're just trying to help each other out and learn together," Ridley said. "One person is not going to get it done all the way through the season and we know that, so we have to be able to depend on everybody."

Lions | Shane Vereen not concerned about Jahvid Best

Wed, 01 Feb 2012 11:52:46 -0800

New England Patriots RB Shane Vereen, who played with Detroit Lions RB Jahvid Best (concussion) at the University of California, is not concerned with Best's health heading into the 2012 season. "I think he's dealing with it pretty fine," Vereen said. "You'll never get one of those answers from Jahvid that, 'Oh, I'm hurt,' or anything like that. He's too tough for all that. How he's really doing? He's the only one that knows that. But I know he's doing well, I know he's going to start training soon and I keep in contact with him pretty regularly."
