Bills | Charles Clay out of action

Tue, 24 May 2016 09:44:51 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (undisclosed) was absent from practice Tuesday, May 24, with an undisclosed injury. Head coach Rex Ryan doesn't think Clay's injury is serious.

Fantasy Tip: In his first season with Buffalo, Clay had 51 catches for 528 yards and three touchdowns. He should be able to improve in his second season in Greg Roman's offense with Tyrod Taylor back at quarterback. Consider Clay a low-end TE1 with room to grow in this offense. Stay tuned for updates on his condition.

Bills | Better year for Charles Clay?

Sat, 21 May 2016 11:53:41 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay is expected to be more productive in his second season with the Bills, according to offensive coordinator Greg Roman. More looks his way and better health are considered to be two key factors in what Buffalo hopes to be a better season for Clay.

Fantasy Tip: To most, Clay underperformed last year, especially with just three touchdowns. Clay is in TE2 territory heading into the 2016 season.

Bills | Charles Clay restructures

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 07:30:46 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay restructured his contract Wednesday, March 2, which freed up $7.5 million for 2016. Clay has $13.5 million in dead money in 2017, $9 million in 2018 and $4.5 million in 2019 with a $9 million salary cap hit each year.

Fantasy Tip: Clay had a disappointing 51-528-3 season last year and is little more than depth TE2.

Bills | Buffalo restructures Charles Clay's deal

Fri, 26 Feb 2016 12:30:54 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay's contract has been restructured, according to general manager Doug Whaley. Financial terms were not disclosed, but an earlier report stated that Clay's $10 million roster bonus would be made into a signing bonus so the team could spread the cap hit over several years.

Fantasy Tip: Clay posted decent numbers in 2015 when he recorded 51 catches for 528 yards and three touchdowns during the regular season. He could be more involved in the passing game next season but probably would be a No. 2 tight end in most leagues.

Bills | Charles Clay could restructure deal

Thu, 25 Feb 2016 18:44:22 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay is close to finalizing a deal that would restructure his contract, converting his $10 million roster bonus into a signing and opening up cap space in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Clay wasn't a difference maker in his first year in Buffalo, and he should be considered a TE2 in 2016.

Bills | Charles Clay placed on IR

Tue, 29 Dec 2015 17:08:56 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (back) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Fantasy Tip: This isn't a big surprise with just one game left in the season. Clay wasn't expected to play this week anyway. Chris Gragg should start again in place of Clay; he's worth consideration on FantasyScore at just $1,700 (3.4% of cap).

Bills | Charles Clay not expected to play

Mon, 28 Dec 2015 11:30:28 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (back) is not expected to be available for the season finale this week, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: Chris Gragg should start again at tight end with Clay not expected to play, but Sammy Watkins is really the only Buffalo pass-catcher worth having in starting lineups right now.

Bills | LeSean McCoy, Charles Clay out

Fri, 25 Dec 2015 16:07:10 -0800

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (knee) and TE Charles Clay (back) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 25, and have been ruled out for the Week 16 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Fantasy Tip: Karlos Williams ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) and Chris Gragg ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) probably will receive starts because of the injuries. Williams could be a solid starting option for owners on FantasyScore because of his cheaper option. Owners probably should pass on Gragg in all leagues.

Bills | LeSean McCoy, Charles Clay not at practice

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 12:28:27 -0800

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (knee) and TE Charles Clay (back) both did not practice Thursday, Dec. 24. It was McCoy's second straight missed practice, while Clay sat out after being limited Wednesday, Dec. 23.

Fantasy Tip: McCoy ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) isn't expected to play. Stay away from him. Karlos Williams ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) should see most of the carries out of the backfield against a horrible run D in the Dallas Cowboys. Williams is a great value pick on FantasyScore. It's puzzling that Clay ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) sat out after practicing yesterday. In any event, it doesn't look good for his chances of playing. He's too risky of a daily option.

Bills | Charles Clay considered questionable

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 05:54:37 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (back) is still sore, and he's considered questionable for Week 16 against the New England Patriots.

Fantasy Tip: Clay ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) has been really unreliable as a fantasy tight end, and he's not a solid play on FantasyScore.

Bills | Charles Clay limited at practice

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 13:33:17 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (back) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Dec. 23.

Fantasy Tip: After showing some glimpses of promise early, Clay ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) has just 20 receptions, one touchdown and 204 receiving yards over his past seven games. It would be wise to look for more reliable production or more upside in his price range at FantasyScore in Week 16, and you should be able to do better in the majority of seasonal leagues.

Bills | Charles Clay may play in Week 16

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 10:41:58 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (back) may be able to play in the Week 16 game against the Dallas Cowboys because the doctors are encouraged with his recovery.

Fantasy Tip: Clay missed the last game because of the injury, so owners will need to monitor his practice participation this week. He likely would receive a solid amount of targets if he plays against the Dallas Cowboys but would have a tough matchup since the Cowboys play well against tight ends.

Sun, 20 Dec 2015 08:44:22 -0800

Bills | Charles Clay ruled out

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 11:27:29 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (back) missed practice all week and is ruled out for Week 15 against the Washington Redskins.

Fantasy Tip: With Clay out, Tyrod Taylor will have to lean more on Sammy Watkins ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) and Robert Woods ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) in the passing game. The 'Skins aren't the strongest unit in the secondary, so both Watkins and Woods could have big games.

Bills | Charles Clay unlikely for Week 15

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 08:13:27 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (back) is out of practice Friday, Dec. 18, and he's unlikely to play in Week 15.

Fantasy Tip: The other Bills tight ends have combined for 10 catches this season. Avoid this situation against the Washington Redskins on FantasyScore.

Bills | Charles Clay remains out

Thu, 17 Dec 2015 14:23:10 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (back) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 17.

Fantasy Tip: Clay ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) has missed the first two practices this week and more about his status will be known Friday, Dec. 18. Clay could be a game-time decision for the Week 15 game against the Washington Redskins, so owners may want to consider other options.

Bills | Charles Clay doesn't practice

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 12:21:24 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (back) did not take part in practice Wednesday, Dec. 16.

Fantasy Tip: It's not a guarantee that Clay ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) will play against the Washington Redskins, so keep an eye on his practice status throughout the week. Clay has been hit or miss this year and coming off an injury against a strong opponent against his position is not the time to use him on FantasyScore.

Bills | Charles Clay day to day

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 06:08:29 -0800

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (back) is day to day with a pulled back muscle.

Fantasy Tip: Clay ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) would be a midrange option against the Washington Redskins on FantasyScore if he suits up for Week 15.

Bills | Charles Clay in jeopardy?

Tue, 15 Dec 2015 13:36:45 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay's (back) status for Week 15 against the Washington Redskins is in jeopardy after he suffered a back injury in Week 14. "I know they're looking at him," head coach Rex Ryan said of Clay and the team's trainers. "I always tell you it's never a good thing when you don't finish a game. I don't know if we've had one guy not finish a game and play the next week. I'm not saying it can't happen, but sometimes it's not a good sign."

Fantasy Tip: Clay's ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) injury was initially believed to not be very serious. You'll need to keep tabs on his practice status this week. The Washington Redskins have been efficient at limiting opposing tight ends, so along with his injury, Clay isn't starting off the week as a strong recommendation on FantasyScore.

Bills | Charles Clay's injury not serious

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 10:46:28 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay's (back) back injury is not considered serious, but the team is still evaluating Clay.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation during practice this week to see if Clay has to miss the Week 15 game. He would be facing a Washington Redskins defense that plays well against tight ends, so owners may want to look for other options to use.

Bills | Charles Clay will not return

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 12:10:53 -0800

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (back) will not return to the team's Week 14 game after he suffered a back injury in the first half.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to wait for an update on Clay's status before looking for a new tight end. Chris Gragg could become the starter at the position if Clay has to miss multiple weeks but should not be a top starting candidate.

Bills | Charles Clay has back injury

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 10:59:45 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (back) suffered a back injury during the team's Week 14 game and is considered questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if Clay will be able to return or if he will miss the rest of the game. Chris Gragg probably would see more playing time if Clay misses extended time but is not a great fantasy option.

Bills | Charles Clay probable against Philly

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 14:30:12 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) was limited in practice all week but is probable for Week 14 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Fantasy Tip: Clay ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) remains a pretty big part of Buffalo's offense, but the Eagles have held their own against tight ends most of the season. He's more of a midrange selection at the position this weekend.

Bills | Limited practice for Charles Clay

Thu, 10 Dec 2015 15:25:25 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) was limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Dec. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Clay ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) should be just fine for Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles have been pretty solid at defending tight ends this year, but Clay has been consistently involved in the offense of late. He's a midrange daily tight end selection this weekend.

Bills | Charles Clay puts in limited practice

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 17:07:36 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) put it a limited practice Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Clay ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) should be good to go against the Philadelphia Eagles unless he suffers a setback this week. He has nine catches on 15 targets in the last two weeks with a touchdown, so he's a heavy part of Buffalo's offense. He's not a terrible daily pick, but keep in mind that the Eagles have done a good job of limiting opposing tight ends this year.

Bills | Charles Clay has neck injury

Mon, 23 Nov 2015 20:49:05 -0800

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (neck) left the Week 11 game against the New England Patriots Monday, Nov. 23, due to a neck injury and he is questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: The MNF game is a game of attrition, as several players have left the game with injuries on a cold, raw and hard-hitting night in Foxboro.

Bills | Charles Clay should play

Fri, 16 Oct 2015 12:23:19 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (calf) was limited during practice Friday, Oct. 16, and is listed as probable for the Week 6 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: Clay ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) could have a bigger role in the passing game because of the injuries to Sammy Watkins ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) and Percy Harvin ($3,100, 6.2% of cap). He was held to only seven yards in the last game but had at least 82 yards in the previous two games. Clay will be facing a tough Bengals defense but could still be a starting option for owners.

Bills | Charles Clay does some drills

Thu, 15 Oct 2015 15:53:51 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (calf) was limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Oct. 15.

Fantasy Tip: The Bills look like they could have both LeSean McCoy and Sammy Watkins back against the Cincinnati Bengals, which could mean less targets for Clay ($6,300, 12.6% of cap). Cincy also hasn't allowed a single touchdown to tight ends this year. Consider Clay a midrange tight end option on FantasyScore.

Bills | Limited practice for Charles Clay

Wed, 14 Oct 2015 16:20:18 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (calf) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Fantasy Tip: It's a good sign that Clay ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) is already practicing early in the week, but keep an eye on his status later this week. The Cincinnati Bengals are middle of the pack against tight ends, but Clay would likely be a better daily play if Tyrod Taylor sits out and EJ Manuel is forced to play.

Bills | Charles Clay set for milestone

Tue, 13 Oct 2015 12:37:49 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay needs just 16 receiving yards to achieve the most receiving yards by a Bills tight end through the first six games of a season.

Fantasy Tip: Clay has stepped up for the most part this year in his first season with the Bills. He's had to with Sammy Watkins missing time. Clay is the sixth-highest scoring tight end in non-PPR leagues so far. However, the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo's Week 6 opponent, haven't allowed a touchdown to tight ends yet in 2015. Furthermore, Tyrod Taylor will probably be sidelined, making Clay a risky play at $6,300 (12.6% of cap) on FantasyScore.

Bills | Charles Clay quiet in victory

Sun, 11 Oct 2015 17:16:24 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay posted just one reception for seven yards in the Week 5 game against the Tennessee Titans. He was targeted three times.

Fantasy Tip: It was a far cry from last week's stat line for Clay ($6,300, 12.6% of cap), who absolutely killed FantasyScore players this week after a couple of nice games.

Bills | Charles Clay, Percy Harvin will play

Fri, 09 Oct 2015 15:00:03 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (calf) and WR Percy Harvin (hip) are both listed as probable for Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans. Clay was limited in practice Friday, Oct. 9, while Harvin was a full participant.

Fantasy Tip: With Sammy Watkins (calf) expected to miss another game, both Clay ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) and Harvin ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) should be firmly on your list of acceptable value picks this weekend.

Bills | Charles Clay has game-high 111 yards

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 20:14:37 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay had nine receptions for 111 yards in the Week 4 game against the New York Giants, and he was targeted a game-high 13 times.

Fantasy Tip: Clay ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) had a big game, and it could have been even bigger if he didn't have a long touchdown reception called back on a questionable chop block penalty. After being quiet in his first two games, he has emerged as a Top 10 FantasyScore option over the past two outings.

Bills | Charles Clay has ongoing knee problems

Sun, 13 Sep 2015 08:05:07 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) has been dealing with knee problems for a while, and doctors are concerned about how long he will be able to play. Clay needed his knee to be drained at least six times last season.

Fantasy Tip: Clay ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) received a lucrative contract from the Bills this season, so they will likely will be cautious with him during the season. Clay probably will receive some targets during games this season but likely will not be one of the top fantasy tight ends.

Bills | Charles Clay should play in Week 1

Fri, 11 Sep 2015 13:01:17 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 11, and is listed as probable for Week 1.

Fantasy Tip: Clay ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) should be on the field for most of the offensive snaps in Week 1 and should receive some targets during the game. Clay could be a cheaper option on FantasyScore if owners want to save some money.

Bills | Charles Clay on the field Thursday

Thu, 10 Sep 2015 14:40:17 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) fully participated in practice Thursday, Sept. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Clay ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) received a lucrative contract from the Bills this offseason and should have a solid role in the passing game. He could be a cheaper starting option on FantasyScore if owners want to spend money at other positions.

Bills | Charles Clay a full go in practice

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 14:30:48 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) practiced in full Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Clay ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) should be good to go against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1. It's hard to say how much he'll be involved with his new team and with a questionable situation at quarterback, but Tyrod Taylor could lean on him often and make him a valuable sleeper pick at tight end if you want to save money at that position.

Bills | Charles Clay leaves practice

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 15:29:36 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) left practice early Tuesday, Aug. 25, with a right knee injury. Afterwards, Clay said he is fine and that he was pulled out for precautionary reasons.

Fantasy Tip: The concerning part of this is that Clay said the injury started nagging. Plus, he's had issues with his knee before. He does have some good potential in Buffalo, but he's not a starting tight end this year.

Bills | Charles Clay not making a good impression

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 09:25:08 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay, who signed a five-year, $38 million deal in the offseason, has been mostly invisible so far at training camp, according to sources. The tight end group led by TEs Clay, Chris Gragg, Nick O'Leary and Matthew Mulligan haven't been blocking very well, either, leading head coach Rex Ryan to try DT Kyle D. Williams as a tight end for better blocking.

Fantasy Tip: Clay still has time to reassert himself into the offensive game plans, but he'll likely need to improve his blocking skills in order to stay on the field more. Still, expecting him to put up TE1 numbers in an offense with a very shaky quarterback situation is probably foolish.

Bills | Charles Clay has confidence

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 17:32:07 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay put himself in the class of TEs Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham Tuesday, Aug. 4. "I look at myself as I'm capable of doing anything," Clay said. "I feel like I'm my own player. I feel like there's things I can do they can't do. And there's things they can do where I'm not as polished," said Clay.

Fantasy Tip: Clay had a career year in 2013 when he hauled in 69 receptions for 759 yards, before missing two games and taking a step backward in 2014. With the Bills' issues at the quarterback position, Clay is nothing more than late-round flier in standard and PPR drafts.

Bills | Charles Clay not involved

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 08:41:58 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay has not been targeted one time in four 11-on-11 practices thus far.

Fantasy Tip: That doesn't mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things, but that's a little alarming. The team has yet to find solidarity at quarterback, and Clay could will have to grow a rapport with the eventual starter. Clay is jumbled up in the long list of players in the mid-to-low TE1 range in fantasy.

Bills | MarQueis Gray excited about offense

Mon, 13 Jul 2015 07:34:41 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE MarQueis Gray is excited about playing in offensive coordinator Greg Roman's scheme with TE Charles Clay. "This offense right here is tight end heaven," Gray said. "We move around so much that we really play receiver, slot, we play everything but running back. You could line up at any of those spots - that's the best part about this offense." Gray also said this could be his breakout year. "Especially with this offense and the opportunities coming my way - I'm going to take full advantage of it," Gray said. "I want to be that guy where defensive coordinators say 'Watch out for 48.' I want to put fear in the defense."

Fantasy Tip: Gray is a fringe option at the position but could be worth a waiver pickup during the season. Clay has some PPR upside and is in the midrange TE1 discussion.

Bills | Charles Clay to move around

Sun, 12 Jul 2015 10:36:06 -0700

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay said he will be lining up at different positions this season under offensive coordinator Greg Roman. "Whether it's running routes or catching as receivers out of the backfield, he does a good job of moving guys around," Clay said. "I can't think of any position where I'm lined up at more than another. The receivers will tell you the same thing. They're moving around as much as I am."

Fantasy Tip: The Bills gave Clay a lucrative contract this offseason, so he should have a solid role in the passing game. He has recorded at least 600 yards in each of the last two seasons and has nine touchdowns in that span. Clay could be a low-end No. 1 tight end or a solid backup in most leagues.

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 10:18:17 -0700

Dolphins | Miami will not match Charles Clay offer

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 08:20:34 -0700

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay's five-year, $38 million offer sheet he signed with the Buffalo Bills will not be matched by the Dolphins, according to a source. Clay will now become a member of the Bills.

Fantasy Tip: Clay will become the starting tight end for the Bills and should have a solid role in the passing game. Clay probably should be considered a No. 2 fantasy tight end at this point because the Bills' uncertain quarterback situation. The Dolphins will go with Jordan Cameron as their starter, and he could be a low-end No. 1 or a No. 2 tight end for owners.

Bills | Buffalo expected to land Charles Clay

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 11:49:27 -0700

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay is expected to land with the Buffalo Bills after signing a five-year, $38 million offer sheet with Buffalo Tuesday, March 17, according to a source. The Dolphins have five days to match the offer sheet, but they aren't expected to. Clay is set to make $24.5 million in the first two years of the deal. The total deal is only for $38 million for five years. Miami's last offer to Clay was for four years and $27 million, including less than $14 million guaranteed.

Fantasy Tip: After the Dolphins signed Jordan Cameron to be their tight end, it was basically a foregone conclusion that Clay wouldn't be back in Miami. In Buffalo, he'll join a suddenly much more formidable offense. However, the quarterback situation remains unsettled, and Clay may get lost in the shuffle for aerial targets. He's probably best left as a midrange TE2 with some upside on draft day.
