49ers | Option offense allows for 11-on-11

Thu, 31 Jan 2013 07:37:44 -0800

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said running the option enables a unit to play 11-on-11. "Football without an option attack, the offense is basically playing with 10. A quarterback that doesn't block anybody, isn't an ineligible pass receiver, basically leaves the defense with one more than you have," Harbaugh said. "But when the quarterback is the threat to run in an option attack, or give or pitch, that gets the numbers back to even, back to 11-on-11." QB Colin Kaepernick not only has the ability to be an effective passer, but also has the speed to turn the corner.

"From a cap standpoint, we have the room to be able to keep him. One quarterback is usually not enough to get you through a season. And to have two guys which the Niners had in Steve (Young) and Joe (Montana) for a long time, there's no reason why you can't have two guys on your team. And I hope we can find a way to make that happen." York added Smith has not yet asked the team to release him.

Wed, 30 Jan 2013 06:36:56 -0800

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh believes offensive coordinator Greg Roman is changing the way people around the league are thinking about offensive football. Roman has effectively combined aspects of the read-option that QB Colin Kaepernick runs out of the pistol formation without losing the power game with fullbacks and tight ends that the team likes to run. "I think Greg Roman has done a job that is revolutionary in football," Harbaugh said. "I think the way he has mixed the trap, the power, the wham plays, into the pistol offense and into our conventional offense has been revolutionary in many ways."

Mon, 28 Jan 2013 17:30:18 -0800

"He's prepared and been involved in the game planning, in preparations, he's prepared himself as the starter each week," Harbaugh said of Smith. "That's what he's done, that's what we expect of him and that's what he has delivered. Another person really to credit in Colin's success because Alex has really helped coach Colin and has been right there by his side. Sitting there in meetings every single day. He coaches Colin now more than I do, and that speaks high of the kind of person and teammate that Alex Smith is."

Ravens | Must tackle Colin Kaepernick

Thu, 24 Jan 2013 09:58:06 -0800

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said Thursday, Jan. 24, the key to containing San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick in Super Bowl XLVII is to not let him get to the outside, in addition to tacking him when the opportunity arises. "We're going to have to tackle him. We're going to have to keep him inside of our defense," Harbaugh said. "We're not going to be able to run past him. He's fully capable of putting 200 yards on you, just as capable as Frank Gore is or any of their running backs. He's not just an integral part of their passing game, he's a huge part of their run game. We'll have a plan for it. Assignment football is going to be really important for us. Change-ups are going to be important for us. We just have to play well against him."

"Could it be that Chip Kelly watched the playoffs and watched Russell Wilson run a little bit of his read option in the spread offense, and watched Colin Kaepernick run a little bit more of it?" Dungy said. Dungy added he believes Kelly watched the playoffs thinking, "My offense is way farther advanced than that, and maybe if this is going through the NFL, it might not be so tough."

49ers | Michael Crabtree hungry for more success

Wed, 09 Jan 2013 17:44:04 -0800

San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree posted 19 catches for 344 yards and four touchdowns over the final three regular season games. He thinks he is just scratching the surface heading into the playoffs. He and QB Colin Kaepernick are building a nice rapport, and they experiment together in practice. However, it's their game-time success which breeds more success. "Chemistry really comes on Sunday," Crabtree said. "It comes during the week, too, but when you connect on Sundays, it gives you more confidence."

Fantasy Tip: Crabtree is among the most expensive fantasy option in postseason salary cap formats, but the way he is playing he might be underpriced. He should have another strong game, and is worthy of WR1 fantasy status this weekend.
