49ers | HC has confidence in Colin Kaepernick

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 16:23:54 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has a backer in new head coach Jim Tomsula. "Statistically and all that kind of stuff, people throw those out there -- Colin had his best year, OK. Colin is working down in Arizona. He's a great dude. He's a real good dude. He's a good teammate. He's a neat cat. Colin's going to do real well. Colin's a great football player and even better person. We're really excited about Colin," Tomsula said.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick had a career-high 3,369 yards passing in 2014, but he also threw less touchdowns (19) and more interceptions (10) than he did in 2013. It's clear that he needs to become more accurate and a much better pocket passer in order to have continued success in the NFL. He could be a sleeper in 2015, though, and he should be drafted as a QB2 with upside for more.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick impresses in workouts

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 07:32:12 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick spent five days a week working out, watching film and fine-tuning his mechanics during a 10-week offseason session with quarterback coaches Dennis Gile and Mike Giovando. "I don't think there was a throw he couldn't make when he first got here," Gile said "I just think the consistency and efficiency of it was what we wanted to get better at, and I think that's where we made tremendous strides. He became a lot more consistent and efficient with those balls."

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick will be a mid-to-low QB1 target in traditional drafts in 2015.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not on the block

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 15:16:13 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick isn't being put on the trade block, according to general manager Trent Baalke. Baalke was shooting down a rumor that said the Niners were interested in trading Kaepernick. The report listed the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears among the suitors. "Colin is our quarterback and we are excited to have him," Baalke said. "He is not going anywhere. The media reports suggesting otherwise are without merit and, quite frankly, ridiculous."

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick's disappointing 2014 season (3,369 passing yards, 19 TDs and 10 interceptions) will surely be reflected in 2015 fantasy football drafts. There suddenly isn't as much optimism surrounding Kaepernick's fantasy value unless he becomes a much better pocket passer. The Niners seem to be in a rebuilding phase, as well, which doesn't help. However, he still has upside because of what he can do with his legs, but you should play it safe and consider him nothing more than a decent QB2 in 2015.

49ers | More read option for Colin Kaepernick?

Tue, 03 Feb 2015 13:21:05 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and the team are expected to return to more of a read-option offense in 2015 under head coach Jim Tomsula in order to take advantage of Kaepernick's running ability. There was a sense in the front offense that SF's offense had become too clunky with too many moving parts. The Niners' new offense will be intended to be simpler and get to the line of scrimmage quickly to put pressure on the defense.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick's down season in 2014 will likely make him a value pick in this year's NFL fantasy drafts. If he's allowed to do more designed runs under Tomsula, he could become much more effective for his fantasy football owners as a QB2.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to develop as pocket passer

Fri, 09 Jan 2015 10:00:12 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has enlisted the help of former QB Kurt Warner this offseason in order to help him develop as a pocket passer. "He's gotten by on athleticism, and he's made some great plays and had some great games. But I think the goal is in the time that I'm going to have with him is just to see where he's at and what he knows about the position and how far we can push the envelope as far as helping him develop as a pocket passer," Warner said. Kaepernick ranked 20th in the league with a career-low 86.4 passer rating this season.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick will always be intriguing as a fantasy football quarterback because of his ability to make plays with his legs, as he did often in 2014. However, he won't be a complete QB1 until he develops as a pocket passer and improves his accuracy. If he can do that, he could morph into a true QB1 for fantasy purposes.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to train with Kurt Warner

Tue, 06 Jan 2015 21:29:49 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will train in the Phoenix area at EXOS performance where he will study with former NFL QB Kurt Warner and quarterback coach Dennis Gile during the offseason. Warner will work with Kaepernick on film study and 7-on-7 drills.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick had a disappointing season, struggling as a pocket passer. He could be a sneaky fantasy option in 2015 if he is able to tighten up some of the deficiencies in his game during the offseason.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick could work with QB coach

Fri, 26 Dec 2014 14:40:31 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is open to the possibility of using an independent quarterback coach in the first three months of the offseason. Players aren't allowed to work with their NFL coaches from the end of the season until April 6, at the earliest. "It's hard to break habits in season," Kaepernick said. "You don't want to completely try to change something because it can throw off everything else you're doing."

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick has had a rough season as he's struggled in the passing game from the pocket. If he can work on his footwork and accuracy within the pocket, he could make strides and have a bounce-back season in 2015. In Week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals with nothing on the line for the Niners, Kaepernick is probably a low-end QB1 option at FantasyScore.

NFL | Jeff Garcia wants to coach

Fri, 26 Dec 2014 04:03:01 -0800

Former NFL QB Jeff Garcia, who served as a quarterbacks coach this season for the CFL's Montreal Alouettes, wants to coach in the NFL. Should he leave Montreal, he would likely serve for now as an independent QB coach, and Garcia has expressed a desire to work with San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick owned by Seattle

Sat, 13 Dec 2014 23:39:04 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has been markedly worse versus the Seattle Seahawks than every other NFL franchise in his career. He has averaged only 164 passing yards per game against Seattle, which is 59.5 fewer than his NFL-wide average. Kaepernick has a QB rating 45.1 points lower versus the Seahawks than the rest of the league (95.7), while throwing a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 1-to-3 versus Seattle and 3-to-1 against every other team.

Fantasy Tip: Hopefully you didn't need those damning numbers to tell you to sit Kaepernick this week. Even at a basement price of $4,600 (9.2%) in FantasyScore, he isn't worth the low-ceiling risk.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick less effective rushing

Fri, 12 Dec 2014 18:35:30 -0800

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is averaging 6.2 rush attempts per game this year compared to 5.8 attempts last season, but his yards per attempt have fallen from 5.7 to 4.7.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick's numbers have been down in just about every category this year, and at this point, it's tough to justify using him at FantasyScore regardless of the opponent. He definitely should be avoided in Week 15 as the 49ers take on Seattle on the road.
