San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick said his foot sustained a bone chip on the forefoot and a ruptured capsule on the ball in Week 2 of last season. In the following four games, he averaged fewer than 16 rushing yards per contest. The Niners tried to reduce risk for him any way possible until he was at full strength. His production on the ground increased as he healed, and San Francisco allowed him to do designed runs in the postseason.
Fantasy Tip: In the article, Maiocco guesses that it was Kap's left foot that sustained the injury. The fact Kaepernick ran for 524 yards last year -- the second highest in a single season for a Niners QB -- said there's more in store as long as he's healthy. He's an excellent low-end QB1 pick with upside for more.

After another poor outing by San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert, sources indicate there has been some talk about QB Josh X. Johnson being moved to the No. 2 slot behind QB Colin Kaepernick.
Fantasy Tip: While Johnson would still carry little fantasy value as the backup to Kaepernick, the real story here is how far Gabbert's value may have slid. When you can't even be a competent backup then alarm bills will ring.

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson (hamstring) looked healthy in Day 1 of training camp. QB Colin Kaepernick raved about Johnson's quickness and deceptiveness that fuel his ability to create separation.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson's fantasy prospects in this crowded receiving corps don't bode well for his week-to-week consistency in terms of numbers. He's a WR4 most weeks, with more upside depending on the matchup. But his presence improves this passing game as a whole, giving Kap more cred as a top-10 fantasy QB.

Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick's new contract is a year-to-year deal that guarantees only $13.073 million. For 2014 to 2017 and part of 2018, the base salaries are guaranteed only for injury. April 1 of each year, the guarantees convert from injury only to fully guaranteed. His base salaries from 2015 to 2018 are $12.4 million, $13.9 million, $16.5 million and $17 million, respectively, which are guaranteed for injury only until April 1. In 2018, $5.2 million is guaranteed for injury until April 1.
The total payout potentially de-escalates by $2 million per year, with up to $12 million potentially going away. Kaepernick can halt the de-escalation by taking, in any year of the deal, 80 percent of the snaps and if: the 49ers appear in the Super Bowl or Kaepernick is named a first-team or second-team All-Pro. If he satisfies the requirement in 2014, the full $12 million remains. Starting in 2015, $400,000 per year is tied to workout bonuses, which adds up to $2.4 million of the base value. The contract also requires Kaepernick to purchase, with after-tax dollars money, a disability policy that pays the 49ers $20 million if he suffers a career-ending injury.

The San Francisco 49ers reached an agreement with QB Colin Kaepernick on a six-year extension worth $126 million that will keep him with the team through the 2020 season, according to sources. He'll receive $61 million in guaranteed money.
Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick receives the most guaranteed money in NFL history with this deal. The Niners have their franchise QB locked up now. For fantasy purposes, he's more of a midrange to low-end QB1 once the big names come off the board.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is expected to have his breakout year in 2014, head coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday, May 28.
Fantasy Tip: While inconsistent at times in 2013, Kaepernick still finished in QB1 territory. He has a lot of toys to play with this year, including Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin, Stevie Johnson and Vernon Davis. Add that to his running ability and you have what could be a top-10 fantasy quarterback in 2014.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is defending QB Colin Kaepernick during an investigation involving the quarterback in Miami. "Looking at Colin Kaepernick's situation, at some point there needs to be a resolution to some of this jump-the-gun, witch-hunt scenario we're seeing," Harbaugh said. "I've seen one side reported. I've heard the other side and feel very good there'll be a good resolution, and hopefully a just one, too. I hate to see his reputation be the victim."
