Fantasy Tip: Mark Ingram is out for the year, but Tim Hightower and C.J. Spiller are in front of Hunter, and it'd be very unlikely that Hunter gains any real significant fantasy value with just three weeks left in the season.

49ers | Kendall Hunter has to earn spot

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 14:15:10 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter may need to run with more confidence in the final preseason game if he wants to guarantee a spot on the final roster. The team likes Hunter, but he is not guaranteed a spot at this point because the team has other players at the position.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter is competing for one of the backup spots at running back, so he will need a good showing in the preseason game. He likely will not see much playing time if he makes the team and should not be an option in drafts.

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) may make his preseason debut Saturday, Aug. 29. Hunter received the first carry in practice Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter could push Carlos Hyde for carries, but he's clearly behind Hyde and Reggie Bush in the pecking order. Hunter is a watch list player.

49ers | Kendall Hunter ready for training camp

Wed, 15 Jul 2015 13:25:42 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter has looked good this offseason as the 49ers ready for training camp. Hunter suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament last season, but has had an impressive offseason. Head coach Jim Tomsula said Hunter is coming along well and moving quickly, but that the coaching staff is keeping him on a snap count for now.

49ers | Kendall Hunter looking good

Thu, 04 Jun 2015 11:29:20 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) has looked good during organized team activities, but the team has limited his reps during practice, according to head coach Jim Tomsula. "I think we all have strong feelings for Kendall. He is, you see him out there moving. He's moving around great. But we definitely have a rep count on him. There's a rep count on all of those guys. You've got to keep him corralled. But he's moving around really quick," Tomsula said.

Fantasy Tip: Hunter probably will be behind Carlos Hyde and Reggie Bush on the depth chart but should have a role in the offense. Hunter could be a late-round option in deeper leagues if he is healthy, but probably will not be a starting option most weeks.

49ers | Kendall Hunter moving well

Thu, 21 May 2015 20:43:19 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) made several quick bursts during practice Thursday, May 21.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Hunter's recovery from a torn ACL that cost him all of last season is going well, but he returns to a backfield that now features Carlos Hyde and Reggie Bush. At one time, Hunter looked like a potential heir to Frank Gore. Now, he is likely third in the pecking order for touches.

49ers | Carlos Hyde expected to start

Wed, 13 May 2015 22:49:07 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde is the expected starter heading into the regular season while RBs Reggie Bush, Kendall Hunter and rookie Mike Davis all compete for touches as well.

Fantasy Tip: Hyde will get first crack at the carries and if fantasy drafts were today, he would be the first San Francisco back off the board. The San Francisco RB situation is crowded, though, and it could be similar to a New England situation from last year where one guy is a stud one week and non-existent the next. Be careful to have plenty of depth at the position if you draft 49ers.

49ers | Carlos Hyde the projected lead back

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 11:06:35 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde is the projected lead back for 2015, with impending free-agent RB Frank Gore expected to leave. RB Kendall Hunter (knee) will be returning from an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his knee. Hyde averaged 4.0 yards per carry while rushing for 333 yards in his rookie season in 2014, but he also suffered a sprained ankle in Week 15. Hyde's four rushing touchdowns tied him for the team lead with Gore.

Fantasy Tip: Hyde should be an intriguing fantasy football option as a potential RB2 with upside. However, the uncertainty surrounding the Niners' offense during a regime change can't go unnoticed. How will the power-run game be influenced now that offensive coordinator Greg Roman is gone? With that said, make sure not to overpay for Hyde's services.

Sun, 08 Sep 2013 08:41:38 -0700

He's dealing with a sprained medial collateral ligament and is expected to miss up to three weeks. RB Frank Gore will start with RB Kendall Hunter behind him. RB Anthony Dixon could see a bump in playing time.

Fantasy Tip: This isn't a surprise. James should probably be left to the waiver wire for now in more shallow leagues.

49ers | LaMichael James does not need surgery

Sun, 01 Sep 2013 17:22:17 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James (knee) will not need surgery to repair a partially torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee. However, he will be unavailable to return punts or kickoffs dor at least the first three or four regular season games. Last season, he was not active when both RBs Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter were active, so James might not even dress for the first month or so.

49ers | Frank Gore finally accepts lesser role

Sun, 21 Jul 2013 17:03:52 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore has his snaps regulated last season, as he finally accepted he is more valuable to the team in the long term if he gives up a few carries to his backups. He is still expected to be capable of at least 1,200 rushing yards, but RBs LaMichael James and Kendall Hunter are expected to playing larger roles in the offense.

Fantasy Tip: Gore remains a low-end RB1 for fantasy purposes, but his days as an early first-round draft pick are well over.

49ers | GM believer in using multiple RBs

Wed, 15 May 2013 11:17:03 -0700

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said he believes in using multiple running backs that can do different things on offense. "I'm a big believer -- we are big believers -- in a three-headed approach," Baalke said. "In other words, having a group of backs that bring to the table something a little bit different than the other one so you can do a lot of different things. But also having those backs be able to do enough things the same so you don't become so predictable on game day." RBs Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James likely will see playing time this season.

Fantasy Tip: All three running backs likely will receive playing time this season and could have fantasy value during the season. Gore likely will receive the majority of the carries and should be seen as a mid to weak No. 2 running back option. James and Hunter could be late-round fliers in drafts because of their expected roles on offense.

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (Achilles') is ahead of schedule in his recovery, and he has resumed running, according to a source close to the player. Hunter is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Fantasy Tip: With Frank Gore still starting, and the emergence of LaMichael James late last season, as well as the presence of Anthony Dixon, Hunter will have his work cut out for him trying to carve out of the piece of the pie for himself in 2013.
