49ers | LaMichael James does not need surgery

Sun, 01 Sep 2013 17:22:17 -0700

San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James (knee) will not need surgery to repair a partially torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee. However, he will be unavailable to return punts or kickoffs dor at least the first three or four regular season games. Last season, he was not active when both RBs Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter were active, so James might not even dress for the first month or so.

49ers | GM believer in using multiple RBs

Wed, 15 May 2013 11:17:03 -0700

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said he believes in using multiple running backs that can do different things on offense. "I'm a big believer -- we are big believers -- in a three-headed approach," Baalke said. "In other words, having a group of backs that bring to the table something a little bit different than the other one so you can do a lot of different things. But also having those backs be able to do enough things the same so you don't become so predictable on game day." RBs Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James likely will see playing time this season.

Fantasy Tip: All three running backs likely will receive playing time this season and could have fantasy value during the season. Gore likely will receive the majority of the carries and should be seen as a mid to weak No. 2 running back option. James and Hunter could be late-round fliers in drafts because of their expected roles on offense.

I can even run down on kickoffs. Block field goals. Whatever the team needs me to do as to win ballgames, that's what I'm going to do," James said.

James was surprised to be selected by the team, noting he only talked with them at the NFL Combine. James joins a crowded 49ers backfield, which includes Frank Gore, Brandon Jacobs and Kendall Hunter, who is a similarly sized back.
