Vikings | Short leash for Christian Ponder

Sat, 20 Apr 2013 21:00:26 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder remains the unquestioned starter entering his third NFL season. However, if he goes into a protracted slump like last season, the coaching staff could be inclined to take a look at QB Matt Cassel, who will make $3.7 million this season even if he doesn't take a snap. Cassel fits the system of offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave better than QB Joe Webb, who is expected to serve as the third QB.

Sat, 16 Mar 2013 17:47:12 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel said he understands that he will be the No. 2 quarterback and that QB Christian Ponder will be the team's starting quarterback. "They said they're looking to bring somebody in with experience who could come in and basically be somebody who can step in if need be. The fact of the matter is, again, Christian is the starting quarterback. I think we'll have a great [meeting] room. I'm there to add value. I'm there to help him out in whatever capacity that is, and go from there," Cassel said.

Vikings | Greg Jennings already talking up QB

Fri, 15 Mar 2013 18:08:07 -0700

Minnesota Vikings WR Greg Jennings was cordial when speaking about his new QB Christian Ponder Friday, March 15. "You could see on film (Ponder) didn't have a lot of options to throw to," Jennings said. He said he didn't mean any disrespect.

Fantasy Tip: It's a nice idea to be instantly sympatico with your new quarterback, but at the same time the remaining wideouts and tight end targets from last season might not be too keen being called out by their newest teammate. Still, Jennings has to really only make nice with one guy, and he did. He should be a serviceable WR2 in 2013.

Vikings | Need to improve passing offense

Sun, 27 Jan 2013 18:14:23 -0800

The Minnesota Vikings finished the regular season 31st in passing offense, posting 171.9 net yards per game, down from 28th in 2011. The biggest difference was a slip in red-zone touchdown rate, going from ninth in the NFL, to 18th with a 53.8 percent conversion rate. The Vikings also dropped in third-down conversion rate from 14th in the league, to 19th with a 37.1 percent success rate. Despite those numbers, QB Christian Ponder improved in nearly every statistical category, although his performance was uneven over the course of the season.

Wed, 09 Jan 2013 05:11:36 -0800

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said QB Christian Ponder is the team's starting quarterback moving forward; however, backup QB Joe Webb will have to compete for the No. 2 job. "(Webb will) be a guy that will compete for the No. 2 spot again next year, barring something that we may end up doing in our personnel meetings," Frazier said. "But we'll discuss Joe's position and everyone's position in our personnel meetings and then we'll make a decision what's best."

Vikings | Not focused on Adrian Peterson chasing record

Thu, 20 Dec 2012 08:22:44 -0800

Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder said the team is focused on reaching the postseason, not RB Adrian Peterson's quest for the single-season NFL rushing record. "Obviously our focus is to keep our wild card spot that we have right now and making the playoffs is our No. 1 goal," Ponder said. "But we obviously really want Adrian to get that record and we are going to keep handing the ball off to him and if he keeps doing what he's doing, especially the past eight games, then hopefully he'll achieve that record. I think it's important for him and it's important for us, for him to get that."

Vikings | Pressure being taken off Christian Ponder

Tue, 11 Dec 2012 15:18:41 -0800

Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder attempted only 17 passes and completed 11 of them for only 91 yards in the team's Week 14 win over the Chicago Bears, and head coach Leslie Frazier indicated that the team's game plan has been to take as much pressure off the offense's air attack as possible. RB Adrian Peterson has been propelling the offense on his own, and Ponder has completed 12 or fewer passes in four games this year. "I don't see us being that type of team," Frazier said. "That's not the team that we went to training camp saying that we wanted to be. We want to be able to run the ball effectively, stop the run, create turnovers, play tough hard-nosed defense and win in every phase on special teams. (Sunday) we saw kind of what we've talked about."

Mon, 03 Dec 2012 16:56:07 -0800

Minnesota Vikings WRs Michael Jenkins, Stephen Burton and Devin Aromashodu were targeted a total of five times in the team's Week 13 loss against the Green Bay Packers. WR Jerome Simpson finished with two catches (seven targets) for 25 yards, and WR Jarius Wright had only one catch for 13 yards. "I don't want to make it sound bad, but never in my life have I been a part of something like this," Wright said. "I don't even know how to say it." TE Kyle Rudolph led the aerial assault with six receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown, and QB Christian Ponder went 12-for-25 (48 percent completion rate) for 119 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Ponder's longest completion went for only 21 yards, and the Vikings' receivers were not able to gain much separation.

Vikings | Coach not ruling out QB change

Mon, 03 Dec 2012 12:13:38 -0800

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said he would not rule out the possibility of benching QB Christian Ponder if his play is hurting the team but does not think Ponder is at that point yet. "If things get to a point where your number one (quarterback) is really costing you some situations that could preclude winning you do have to do what's best for the football team," Frazier said. "That's always the case, it's always about what's best for the team."

Vikings | Christian Ponder to be without top target

Sat, 10 Nov 2012 18:12:01 -0800

Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder will be without WR Percy Harvin (ankle) for the Week 10 battle against the Detroit Lions.

Fantasy Tip: Ponder was already struggling before, but now he'll be without his big-play WR against a decent Lions defense. Ponder has slipped down the QB rankings, and is now only worth using as a low-end QB2 in leagues which require two starting signal callers.

Vikings | Becoming one-dimensional

Fri, 09 Nov 2012 15:22:57 -0800

The Minnesota Vikings have become a very one-dimensional team lately, and opponents are choking off WR Percy Harvin and TE Kyle Rudolph. QB Christian Ponder is waiting for routes to open up down the field and it's not happening. Once the Vikings fall behind, they are forced to abandon their running game and their best weapon, RB Adrian Peterson. "Outside of Percy, I don't consider any of those guys really threats. Obviously, I really like Rudolph, but he's not a stretch-you-down-the-field type of guy. I'm not a huge Jerome Simpson fan. I thought as long as we could get them to throw, we'll be all right," said a scout. As a result, Ponder has seemed more hesitant to take chances down the field.

Sun, 04 Nov 2012 19:48:46 -0800

Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder completed 11 of his 22 pass attempts for just 63 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Week 9 against the Seattle Seahawks. Ponder also ran five times for 23 yards. "I don't necessarily think that Christian is the problem. We've got to look at what we're doing and what people are doing against us as well," head coach Leslie Frazier said.

Vikings | Christian Ponder shying away from Kyle Rudolph?

Mon, 29 Oct 2012 09:45:44 -0700

Minnesota Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph had two receptions for 17 yards in Week 8; however, he was essentially a non-factor other than a 12-yard reception on a third-down play in which he was covered by Tampa Bay Buccaneers DE Michael Bennett. QB Christian Ponder didn't throw Rudolph's way again until a quick out for five yards on the final drive as the Buccaneers used safeties to match up when Rudolph was detached from formation and ran linebackers underneath him in zone. Ponder appears to be increasingly skittish about throwing Rudolph the ball when he's covered.

Vikings | Christian Ponder has mechanical flaw

Wed, 17 Oct 2012 13:59:17 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder said a mechanical flaw has been to blame for his four interceptions in the last two games. He has a bad habit of staying put once he's dropped back into the pocket, and his flat-footed throws have gotten him in trouble recently. "I was hitching up, because I was looking left and then he was on the right, and I just never got my foot all the way to the right," Ponder said. "That's why I kind of dropped the ball and it sailed on me." Ponder had six passes broken up and missed 11 others in Week 11, but he still has the league's second highest completion percentage at 68.6 percent.

Vikings | Christian Ponder commits three more turnovers

Sun, 14 Oct 2012 21:42:56 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder completed 35 of his 52 pass attempts for 352 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 6 loss against the Washington Redskins. He also had four carries for 13 yards, and he lost a fumble.

Fantasy Tip: Ponder had no interceptions through his first four games, but he has thrown a total of four picks in the past two weeks. Despite the seven turnovers in his first six games, he also has two TD passes in four of his past five games, emerging as a viable fantasy bye-week option and solid play when your primary option has a difficult matchup.
