Marlins | Tom Koehler injured

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 00:03:04 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler (muscle) left his start Tuesday, July 26, after 73 pitches with minor stiffness in his pectoral muscle. Manager Don Mattingly expects Koehler will make his next start. Koehler picked up the win in a 5-0 shutout of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Fantasy Tip: Mattingly does not expect this to be an issue, so you should not read too much into this either. Koehler is worth srarting in favorable matchups like those against Philadelphia.

Marlins | Eight strong for Tom Koehler

Thu, 21 Jul 2016 19:22:58 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler allowed three runs, one earned, on two hits while walking one and striking out five over eight innings in a win over the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday, July 21.

Fantasy Tip: The impressive start came on the heels of four short outings, and at best Koehler is a fringe starter in NL-only leagues.

Cardinals | Matt Holliday absent from lineup

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 15:06:36 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B/OF Matt Holliday is not in the lineup against Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler on Saturday, July 16. OF Tommy Pham will draw his fourth straight start in left field - Holliday's usual position - and lead off, while 1B Matt Adams will hit fifth and play first base.

Fantasy Tip: Holliday had an ankle issue before the break, but there has been no indication he is still being hampered with it, so this appears to be a planned day off. Pham might be worth a look in DFS with three homers and five RBI in his last three contests - including two and four, respectively, in Friday's loss. Adams ended a miserable 0-for-29 stretch right before the break, but he'll need to string something together before owners should trust him again anytime soon in fantasy.

Marlins | Tom Koehler has short afternoon

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 16:48:07 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler did not fare well in his start Wednesday, June 29, against the Detroit Tigers. The right-hander managed to last only three innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and a walk. He also had only two strikeouts. With the loss, Koehler's record fell to 6-7.

Fantasy Tip: Koehler is basically as mediocre as they get, which means his usage in fantasy leagues should be highly limited and really only based upon selective matchups. He's also typically considerably better in home starts at Marlins Park, so in outings like today's assignment, Koehler has no business being in any fantasy starting lineups.

Marlins | Mixed results for Tom Koehler

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 13:20:13 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler walked six batters in six innings Sunday, June 19, but he also allowed just two hits in a 3-0 win over the Colorado Rockies.

Fantasy Tip: Not the best pitching line you'll ever see, but it was still a decent victory for Koehler. Miami's developing some good pitchers, and Koehler is turning into one of them. He's worth playing in DFS formats if the matchup is favorable, and Koehler may be worth saving in deeper mixed and NL formats.

Marlins | Tom Koehler keeps rolling

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 23:41:16 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler gave up two runs on six hits in six innings against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, June 14. He walked one and struck out eight.

Fantasy Tip: This was Koehler's eighth straight start allowing three runs or fewer. His numbers in that time: 49 2/3 IP, 40 H, 16 ER, 25 BB and 44 K's. The only thing holding Koehler back was the walks, but he has issued only three free passes in his last 18 frames so even that appears to be clearing up. He has definite value in deeper mixed formats and could even help some in standard leagues.

Marlins | Tom Koehler looks to stay hot

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 23:17:37 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler is scheduled to start Thursday, June 9, against the Minnesota Twins. He hasn't allowed more than three runs in his past six starts.

Fantasy Tip: Koehler faces a favorable matchup, and will be an attractive pick in DFS leagues. He has re-emerged as a must-start in NL-only fantasy play and some deeper mixed formats as well.

Marlins | Tom Koehler tagged with loss Friday

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 18:56:16 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler (3-6) allowed three runs on six hits over six innings in a loss to the New York Mets Friday, June 3, with one walk and six strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: The Marlins are just 1-6 in Koehler's last seven starts, although he has tossed at least five innings and allowed three runs or fewer in six of those outings. He's a viable pitching option for NL-only fantasy formats but owners in shallow mixed leagues should be able to find better options.

Braves | Tyler Flowers gets the day off

Sun, 29 May 2016 12:21:48 -0700

Atlanta Braves C Tyler Flowers is not in the lineup on Sunday, May 29, against Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler. C A.J. Pierzynski will draw his first start in four days behind the plate and bat sixth. INF Chase d'Arnaud will see his first action of the year at shortstop - the third different Atlanta player to start there in as many days - and hit eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Flowers has been one of the few bright spots on a dreadful Atlanta team this season, although he is only a consideration for those owners in NL-only or two-catcher formats. The 29-year-old d'Arnaud should start seeing more playing time with Erick Aybar on the disabled list and is batting .356, but he has yet to hit a home run or drive in a run in 45 at-bats.

Marlins | Tom Koehler solid, but takes loss

Wed, 18 May 2016 15:33:22 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler suffered his fourth loss of the season despite a fine showing Wednesday, May 18, against the Philadelphia Phillies. He tied a season high by going seven innings, issuing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and five walks, while striking out four.

Fantasy Tip: That's way too many baserunners to allow on the basepaths but other than that, Koehler was pretty good here, adding another nice effort to his recent string of solid starts. In his last three outings, he's allowed two earned runs or fewer, though he has no wins to show for it. If he can keep it up, he'll have some value for NL-only leagues, but he's still too inconsistent overall for most mixed formats.
