Marlins | Two MIA hurlers could be traded

Sun, 21 Jun 2015 11:22:26 -0700

Miami Marlins SPs Tom Koehler (neck, back) and Brad Hand may be involved in a developing trade with an unknown team.

Fantasy Tip: Koehler ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) was unable to make his most recent start against the Cincinnati Reds Saturday, June 20, due to neck and back injuries. He is 5-4 with a 3.76 ERA in 13 games, 12 of which were starts. Hand ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) has experienced far less success this year, going 1-2 with a 5.97 ERA in 20 games, three of which were starts.

Marlins | Justin Nicolino sharp in debut

Sun, 21 Jun 2015 09:17:18 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Justin Nicolino tossed seven scoreless innings against the Cincinnati Reds in an emergency spot start Saturday, June 20, after SP Tom Koehler (neck) was scratched with a neck injury. Nicolino gave up just four hits and two walks after sporting a 2.87 ERA in 78 1/3 innings for Class AAA New Orleans this year.

Fantasy Tip: Nicolino is the team's No. 3 ranked prospect, per MLB.com, and the left has really stood out in Miami's system the past two years. The southpaw doesn't miss many bats and has seen his strikeout numbers drop in recent seasons, but he can be effective when he's spotting his pitches, and he could be an effective spot starter when throwing in pitching-friendly Miami. However, it's unknown if he'll remain in the rotation, and his fate could be tied to that of Koehler.

Marlins | Tom Koehler will start Tuesday

Mon, 18 May 2015 19:55:48 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler will start Tuesday, May 19, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Koehler will make an emergency start in place of SP Jarred Cosart (head).

Fantasy Tip: Koehler ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) had recently been moved to the Marlins' bullpen but he will be an option once again on FantasyScore. Low strikeout totals will limit Koehler's fantasy potential, but he showed some promising signs at the start of the season, allowing just two earned runs in each of his first two starts.

Marlins | Tom Koehler out of the rotation?

Wed, 13 May 2015 18:06:06 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler is a candidate to be bumped from the rotation once SP Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) is healthy enough to return, perhaps as early as Sunday, May 17. Koehler or SP David Phelps will be demoted to the bullpen up Alvarez's return.

Fantasy Tip: Koehler had worked in the bullpen for years, so it wouldn't be a tough adjustment. For fantasy purposes he would be nearly useless in a non-starting role, however.

Marlins | Weather could bother Tom Koehler

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 21:51:19 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler is listed as the probable pitcher for the game Tuesday, April 14, against the Atlanta Braves. The weather forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms throughout the game.

Fantasy Tip: The weather report is identical to Mondayís game which was delayed to start, and then delayed again after four innings for 40 minutes. Miamiís Mat Latos pitched well before the delay, returned to pitch after and was then off. FantasyScore owners would be wise to avoid Koehler, even at a tempting price of $3,200 (or 6.4% of cap), because of the weather uncertainty.

Marlins | Miami sets rotation

Wed, 01 Apr 2015 15:37:53 -0700

Miami Marlins SPs Mat Latos and Tom Koehler will pitch the second and third games of the season against the Atlanta Braves Tuesday, April 7, and Wednesday, April 8, respectively. SPs Dan Haren and Jarred Cosart will start the first two games of the series against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday, April 10, and Saturday, April 11, respectively.

Fantasy Tip: Henderson Alvarez was already named the starter for opening day, and all five pitchers receive nice matchups to begin the season. The Braves overhauled their lineup this offseason, and the Rays look quite different, too. In the spacious confines of Marlins Park, there is plenty of potential for streaming in seasonal leagues and starting opportunities for FantasyScore players.

Marlins | Brad Hand's changeup improved as he competes for rotation spot

Mon, 17 Mar 2014 14:06:36 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Brad Hand, who is out of minor league options and is fighting for a roster spot as a starter or reliever, has a 0.75 ERA and has struck out 15 hitters in 12 innings this spring. Hand is firmly competing for a roster spot with SPs Tom Koehler and Kevin Slowey. "My changeup has been working really well this spring," Hand said. "That's been the biggest part of where I've struggled, getting behind hitters, walking guys. That's one of the big things I've been working on, getting ahead and staying ahead."
