Panthers | Cam Newton checked for concussion

Mon, 17 Nov 2014 10:18:53 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (head) was checked for a possible concussion in the first quarter of the team's Week 11 game but was cleared to play.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been hit a lot this season but will have a week to rest since the team has a Week 12 bye. Newton is no longer an every week starting option since he has thrown at least one interception in each of his last seven games.

Panthers | Cam Newton playing hurt

Wed, 12 Nov 2014 17:13:58 -0800

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot, ankle) admitted that he has been playing hurt after saying he was fine following the team's embarrassing Week 10 loss Monday, Nov. 10. "Hurt is hurt," Newton said. "If you're asking me am I hurt right now? Yeah, I'm hurt. I haven't felt 100 percent in a long time. Is that going to hinder anything or that's been my excuse of why we're on a losing streak? No." Newton hasn't posted a quarterback rating higher than his career average of 85.4 since Oct. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Well then. Newton didn't look right and wasn't his explosive self while trying to escape the pocket against the Philadelphia Eagles. Even though he has a nice matchup against the Atlanta Falcons this weekend, it's hard to justify spending $7,500 on him at FantasyScore when he's not 100 percent healthy. Look elsewhere.

Panthers | Cam Newton not injured

Tue, 11 Nov 2014 14:46:26 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot, ankles), didn't injure his foot or reinjure his ankles in Week 10 Monday, Nov. 10, according to head coach Ron Rivera. "I'm not sure where all that came from. But put it to rest," Rivera said. "He said it at his press conference after the game, he's fine." Newton didn't look right in the loss, and he struggled to accelerate to avoid sacks. He finished the game going 18-for-30 for 195 yards, zero touchdowns and three interceptions.

Fantasy Tip: Newton's offensive line did a terrible job of protecting him against the Philadelphia Eagles. It's great news that Newton isn't injured, but even with a nice matchup in store against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 11, it's hard to trust him for a FantasyScore price of $6,800.

Panthers | Cam Newton looked tentative

Tue, 11 Nov 2014 09:33:33 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton didn't look right in the team's Week 10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Monday, Nov. 10, looking slow, tentative and weak in the effort. Newton finished the game with four turnovers in the rout.

Fantasy Tip: In Newton's defense, his offensive line put up a pitiful performance and didn't give him much of a chance at all. However, he still didn't look right, and he's definitely beat up physically, as he was seen grimacing at various moments during the night. It's hard to trust Newton as your FantasyScore quarterback right now.

Panthers | Cam Newton has another injury

Tue, 11 Nov 2014 07:06:05 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle, foot) is nursing a right foot injury, which could be the result of compensating for the lingering soreness in his left ankle.

Fantasy Tip: Newton ($6,800; 13.6% of your cap) has a great matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, but at this point you really can't play him on FantasyScore.

Panthers | No progress for Cam Newton extension

Fri, 31 Oct 2014 11:02:14 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton and the team have made no progress in talks about a contract extension since discussing it before the season. Both sides hope to have something done in the offseason, however.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been pretty bad in recent weeks for his fantasy football owners. Consider Newton a midrange to weak QB1 and play him accordingly based on the matchups.

Panthers | Cam Newton struggles again

Fri, 31 Oct 2014 10:56:43 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton had the worst statistical game of his career in the Week 9 loss to the New Orleans Saints Thursday, Oct. 30, completing just 10 of 28 passes for 151 yards with no touchdowns and one interception (he also ran a TD in). Newton posted career lows in completions, completion percentage (35.7) and passer rating (39.4). He was sacked four times and also lost a fumble.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been bad of late, reminding owners that he's a midrange QB1 on a week-to-week basis. He can make plays with his legs, but if his offensive line can't protect him, it won't be pretty, like we saw last night.

Panthers | Cam Newton takes big step

Mon, 13 Oct 2014 06:40:54 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) rushed 17 times for 107 yards in Week 6 Sunday, Oct. 12. Head coach Ron Rivera said Newton was pretty close to being fully back from offseason ankle surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been heavily limited all season, but he exploded in this game and at least attempted to run the ball. Newton remains a weak QB1 on FantasyScore most weeks with some upside.

Panthers | No extension talks yet for Cam Newton

Mon, 13 Oct 2014 00:54:03 -0700

No talks on a contract extension have been held for Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton, but the team was made clear Newton has no interest in a "pay as you go" deal like those signed by Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton or San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick. Signing Newton long-term will likely mean a full guarantee of over $50 million and no ability to easily cut Newton after any given season. Newton's management also wants to wait and see what type of deal Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson gets.

Panthers | Cam Newton dings up arm

Sun, 12 Oct 2014 13:05:45 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (hand) was banged up late in the fourth quarter of the Week 6 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. He appeared to bang his throwing arm or thumb on an interception, and was being checked by a trainer on the sidelines.

Panthers | Cam Newton on the mend

Tue, 07 Oct 2014 20:35:51 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle, ribs) said he believes his ribs are fully healed, but he also said that he is still experiencing some ankle pain. "I think my body is mending up slowly but surely," Newton said. "It's giving me a lot of great confidence when I am thinking about running the football, and throwing the football, as well."

Fantasy Tip: Newton is throwing the ball well this season, but he just isn't the same dynamic fantasy option when he isn't running the ball. He has a tough matchup in Week 6 on the road against Cincinnati, and until the Panthers turn him loose, fantasy owners may want to look elsewhere for quarterback at FantasyScore.

Panthers | Cam Newton had teeth removed

Mon, 06 Oct 2014 09:22:40 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (teeth) had his wisdom teeth removed last Tuesday, but he wasn't on the Week 5 injury report. He had all four of his wisdom teeth removed Tuesday, and he said he's been dealing with some pretty bad pain. Newton went 19-for-35 for 255 yards and two touchdowns against the Chicago Bears.

Fantasy Tip: Obviously Newton's teeth didn't bother him at all in Sunday's game. He'll face the Cincinnati Bengals on the road next week. It's not the best matchup for those looking to start Newton in daily leagues.

Panthers | Cam Newton checked by trainers

Sun, 05 Oct 2014 10:16:11 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (undisclosed) was checked by trainers on the sidelines after taking a hard hit in the team's Week 5 game Sunday, Oct. 5, but he is expected to be fine.

Fantasy Tip: Newton hasn't looked healthy all season, and as long as he keeps taking big hits, he will likely to continue to deal with a bunch of nagging injuries.

Panthers | Cam Newton's rehab ongoing

Thu, 02 Oct 2014 09:12:47 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle, ribs) said he's surprised that his surgically repaired left ankle still isn't 100 percent. "I'm still in that mode of trying to realize I'm still trying to recover from major ankle surgery that was displayed to me originally as a little cleanup," Newton said. "But I'm glad that it happened. My ankle is getting back and is feeling stronger than ever and hopefully I will be able to display my running talents here soon."

Newton has only run four times for 14 yards in the last two weeks, and he's run eight times for 33 yards in three games, accounting for just one percent of the rushing offense. In his first three seasons, he accounted for 33.1 percent of the rushing offense. Head coach Ron Rivera said the play calling has been different because of Newton's limitations, and Rivera said Newton's rib injuries set back his rehab on his ankle.

Fantasy Tip: Newton's fantasy value has taken a hit because of his inability to use his legs for extra yards. Newton continues to say that he'll be able to open it up soon, but until that happens, he's not an intriguing FantasyScore play.

Panthers | Cam Newton to be more involved

Mon, 29 Sep 2014 11:22:42 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is getting healthy enough for the team to expand their offense, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Newton has only rushed for 33 yards on eight carries in the last three games but accounted for 31.1 percent of the team's rushing yards in the past three seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been slowed by injured ribs and an offseason ankle surgery so far this season but could have more of an impact if he regains his ability to run. Owners may want to wait on using Newton until they see how he performs in the expanded offense.

Panthers | Cam Newton took shot to knee

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 07:34:46 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (knee) took a hit to his knees late in the game Sunday, Sept. 21, and came up limping. He said after the game that he felt fine.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been ineffective running the ball, in large part due to his recovery from offseason ankle surgery. He's a questionable start except in good matchups due to his inability to run the ball at this point.

Panthers | Cam Newton won't be 100 percent

Fri, 19 Sep 2014 06:25:48 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs, ankle) is unlikely to be 100 percent the rest of the season. He experiences pain the night after the games and receives treatment the next two days in hopes of practicing every Wednesday. Head coach Ron Rivera said Newton's ankle bothered him more than the ribs. However, Newton said neither injury was worse than the other.

Fantasy Tip: Newton's rushing yardage could be limited this season due to his ailments. However, he remains a low-end QB1 option each week.

Panthers | Cam Newton sore

Tue, 16 Sep 2014 10:16:52 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) was dealing with a bit of soreness in his foot after the Week 2 game, according to head coach Ron Rivera. However, Rivera thinks it's a good sign after Newton had offseason ankle surgery back in March. "Because it's more sore than his back," Rivera said. "Which is good. At least, I think it's good. He's moving around pretty good and he's feeling pretty good about himself."

Fantasy Tip: Newton's ankle is a minor concern, and his ribs didn't appear to be a problem at all in his first game of the 2014 season. Continue to start him as you would otherwise.

Panthers | Cam Newton plays well in return

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 20:34:57 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) completed 22 of his 34 pass attempts for 281 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions in the Week 2 win against the Detroit Lions. He also ran four times for 19 yards. "I felt like I was getting antsy early on and that comes from a lack of playing time," Newton said Sunday, Sept. 14. "I was getting my feet back under me and as the game went on I started feeling more comfortable and it showed."

Panthers | Cam Newton probable

Fri, 12 Sep 2014 10:41:14 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 13 and is probable.

Fantasy Tip: Newton looks like he will play in Week 2, but is a risky play with a FantasyScore price of $6,200 (12.4% of cap), especially if he not at full strength.

Panthers | Cam Newton set for Sunday

Thu, 11 Sep 2014 14:59:36 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Sept. 11.

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore players should wait for Newton ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) to prove his health before they lock him into their lineups, especially with only one quarterback roster slot.

Panthers | Cam Newton a full participant

Wed, 10 Sep 2014 13:11:08 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) practiced in full Wednesday, Sept. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Head coach Ron Rivera said Newton would start in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions earlier this week. It looks like that'll hold true unless Newton suffers a setback. Play Newton with caution this week at FantasyScore at a price of $6,200 (12.4% of cap).

Panthers | Cam Newton in full pads

Wed, 10 Sep 2014 10:31:54 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) was in full pads for practice Wednesday, Sept. 10, indicating that he should return to action in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions after missing the season opener.

Fantasy Tip: If Newton starts, he should be in all standard fantasy lineups. Starting him at FantasyScore for a price of $6,200 (12.4% of cap) is a dice roll, though, even against a thin Detroit Lions secondary.

Mon, 08 Sep 2014 11:02:27 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) is expected to practice Wednesday, Sept. 10, and play Week 2, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to see how he performs during practice this week before deciding on their Week 2 lineup. Newton could still be a risky play for owners, because he could be limited by his injured ribs.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) is expected to play in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions. Newton wasn't happy with decision to hold him out of Week 1.

Panthers | Cam Newton may miss several weeks

Sun, 07 Sep 2014 09:52:00 -0700

The Carolina Panthers fear that QB Cam Newton (ribs) could miss three to four weeks because of his injured ribs. Newton can change the team's mind if he can show he can protect his ribs while playing. At this point, the team plans to start QB Derek Anderson Week 1.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation for any updates on Newton's condition. FantasyScore owners should avoid using Newton this week. Anderson should not be an option in fantasy leagues at any point.

Panthers | Cam Newton expected to sit

Sun, 07 Sep 2014 09:13:03 -0700

Panthers | Cam Newton could sit

Sun, 07 Sep 2014 06:10:41 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) could be held out of the team's Week 1 game by head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera may hold him back to make sure he is healthy for the rest of the season.

Fantasy Tip: With a FantasyScore price of $6,800 (13.60% of cap), Newton is an extremely risky play. If he gets into the game, it may be tough for him to live up to expectations.

Panthers | Cam Newton takes full reps

Sat, 06 Sep 2014 12:53:58 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) took full repetitions in practice Saturday, Sept. 6, with no setbacks. Newton could very well be on schedule to play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Fantasy Tip: Newton still isn't a great play against the Buccaneers on the road. You may find better value than Newton's $6,800 cost on FantasyScore.

Panthers | Cam Newton questionable

Fri, 05 Sep 2014 11:09:04 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) practiced in full Friday, Sept. 5, and is listed as questionable for Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Fantasy Tip: Newton will be a game-time decision Sunday, and it'll likely come down to head coach Ron Rivera whether he starts. You'd be smart to avoid Newton and his $6,800 FantasyScore salary (13.6% of salary cap) in the season opener against a Bucs defense that will be greatly improved.

Panthers | Cam Newton a game-time decision

Thu, 04 Sep 2014 12:22:04 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) is on pace to play Week 1, but his availability will be a game-time decision, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Newton was limited during practice Thursday, Sept. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Owners in all leagues probably should avoid using a Panthers quarterback this week even if Newton is able to play because of the questions the team has a wide receiver.

Panthers | Cam Newton hopes to play

Thu, 04 Sep 2014 11:57:59 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) said he expects to play Week 1 but will allow the coaches and trainers to determine his availability. Newton was able to do some throwing during practice Thursday, Sept. 4, and said it does not hurt when he throws.

Fantasy Tip: Derek Anderson likely would get the start Week 1 if Newton sits out but should not be used in any fantasy league.

Panthers | Cam Newton does not throw

Thu, 04 Sep 2014 10:27:50 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) did not throw any passes during the media-access portion of practice Thursday, Sept. 4. Newton was on the field and handing the ball off during practice.

Fantasy Tip: Newton should play Week 1, but it is not known if he will be limited in any way by his injured ribs. Newton probably should not be a starting quarterback in most fantasy leagues, and at $6,800 on FantasyScore, owners could consider spending a little extra money on a better quarterback.

Wed, 03 Sep 2014 15:39:49 -0700

The Carolina Panthers are confident QB Cam Newton (ribs) will be ready to go in the team's Week 1 game. Newton was sore Wednesday, Sept. 3, after throwing Monday Sept. 1.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) is wearing a flak jacket to get used to it for the season, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera said Newton is still sore but not as much as he used to be.

Fantasy Tip: It's good news that Newton isn't as sore as when the injury first happened. It's to be expected that Newton would wear some kind of protection around his ribs. This should be encouraging despite the fact he's still sore.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) is participating in practice Monday, Sept. 1. Newton is wearing an oversized flak jacket to help protect his fractured ribs.

Fantasy Tip: Newton should play Week 1 if he does not suffer a setback during the week. Owners should consider Newton as a low-end No. 1 quarterback or could keep him on the bench if they have a better option at the position.

Panthers | Cam Newton expects to play

Wed, 27 Aug 2014 21:47:58 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) said Wednesday, Aug. 27, that he will be ready for the regular season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite fracturing his ribs last week. "There's no doubt in my mind," Newton said.

Fantasy Tip: If Newton is unable to play, Derek Anderson would likely get the start. For now, Newton is a risky play for the regular season opener, and he could easily have a setback if he is hit the wrong way in Week 1. Fantasy owners should try to have plenty of depth on hand if they have already drafted Newton, or plan to do so.

Wed, 27 Aug 2014 14:09:15 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) will not be running a limited offense due to his rib injury. The team will still run the zone read.

Fantasy Tip: While this should be considered good news, Newton is still a risky Week 1 play because of questions at wide receiver as well as his health. Be cautious on draft day if Newton is still on the board.

Panthers | Cam Newton will be ready

Wed, 27 Aug 2014 09:33:16 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (rib) said he fully expects to be ready to play Week 1.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has a little over a week to recover from his rib injury, which should be enough time. Owners probably should not consider using Newton in Week 1 because of the questions at wide receiver, and he is facing a solid Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (rib) has a hairline fracture in one of his ribs and will not play in the final preseason game next week. Head coach Ron Rivera said he thinks Newton will be ready for Week 1.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) suffered a back contusion during the third preseason game, but X-rays on the back came back negative, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera is confident that Newton will be fine.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Newton suffered a minor injury during the game, but there is a chance he sits out the final preseason game. Newton probably will be a low-end starting quarterback in most leagues because of the question marks the team has at wide receiver.

Panthers | Cam Newton not at 100 percent

Fri, 15 Aug 2014 14:20:50 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle), who is expected to play a quarter in his first preseason action against the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday, Aug. 17, said he still is at less than 100 percent healthy. "The thing that keeps coming back up is, 'Keep treating it. Treat it when it feels good, treat it when it feels bad. Don't be that guy that only treats it when it's nagging. Try to stay ahead of the pain,'" Newton said. "That's what I've been doing, and it's been paying off." Head coach Ron Rivera said the team will not run any read-option plays against the Chiefs this weekend. Newton took part in every drill in practice Thursday, Aug. 14, and Rivera was encouraged by Newton's performance in the hurry-up offense.

Fantasy Tip: Newton probably isn't far off 100 percent health, but he's taking things slowly and being cautious in the preseason. He remains a risky and overvalued quarterback in drafts this year. Without much to work with at receiver, Newton's numbers could easily suffer drastically in 2014.

Thu, 14 Aug 2014 14:58:34 -0700

Thu, 14 Aug 2014 12:49:21 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) is expected to play in the first quarter of the team's second preseason game.

Fantasy Tip: Don't expect a lot in Newton's return to action. Getting him back on the field and in a game situation with his new wide receivers is a good thing for all involved. There are still a lot of questions surrounding this offense that could hurt Newton's fantasy football value in 2014.

Panthers | Cam Newton running read option in practice

Mon, 11 Aug 2014 09:49:21 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) tucked the ball on a read option in team drills Sunday, Aug. 10, and also made a nice run to the right side after being cleared to play in the team's second preseason game this weekend. Head coach Ron Rivera said Newton and the other starts will likely play longer than normal in the second preseason game because they play on the road against the New England Patriots five days later.

Fantasy Tip: It's great to see Newton with the leash off in training camp, and barring any setbacks, he should be good to go for Week 1 coming off offseason ankle surgery. Newton's legs set him apart from a lot of other quarterbacks in fantasy football, but you have to wonder if the lack of receiving playmakers will hurt his value as a QB1 in 2014.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) has been cleared to play in the second preseason game, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Fantasy Tip: Newton appears to be close to recovering from his offseason ankle surgery. He may not receive a lot of time in the preseason game, but his workload likely would increase in the next game. He should be seen as a low-end No. 1 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.
