Panthers | Carolina in the market for backup QB?

Sun, 11 Mar 2018 11:42:33 -0700

The Carolina Panthers are "heavily interested in finding a veteran to back up QB Cam Newton this offseason," according to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin.

Fantasy Tip: Volin says the Panthers "simply want an upgrade" to impending free-agent Derek Anderson considering Newton is "constantly banged up." Given the fact there aren't 32 competent starting quarterbacks in the league, it may be too much to ask Carolina to ask for much of an upgrade. New offensive coordinator Norv Turner has some familiarity with Teddy Bridgewater should he not land a starting gig in free agency, while Matt Moore spent 2007-10 with the Panthers before leaving for the Miami Dolphins.

Panthers | No major changes for Cam Newton in 2018

Fri, 16 Feb 2018 11:51:02 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton "doesn't need changing, he just needs to be the best version of Cam Newton," according to quarterbacks coach Scott Turner. "He's going to run - that's what makes him the dynamic player he is - but also making the throws in the pocket, going through his reads. All of those things come from experience, and he's played seven seasons now," Turner said.

Fantasy Tip: Newton hasn't completed 60 percent of his passes in any season since 2013 and is a 58.5 percent thrower for his career, which is about the only thing keeping him from becoming the premier fantasy option at his position on a yearly basis. The Panthers would be wise to let him continue to pick his spots as a runner and have to hope Team Turner (offensive coordinator Norv as well as Scott) can help him become a more accurate passer. Newton will remain a clear QB1 for fantasy purposes in 2018.

Wed, 24 Jan 2018 07:51:22 -0800

Updating an earlier report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (knee, head) suffered a knee injury earlier in the NFC Wild Card game that contributed to him going to the ground after a blow to the head. The knee injury will not require surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Newton had a solid season despite coming off of a shoulder injury. He'll remain a midrange QB1 option in fantasy next season.

Panthers | NFL doing concussion protocol investigation on CAR

Sun, 14 Jan 2018 07:24:56 -0800

The National Football League is currently investigating whether the Carolina Panthers properly followed concussion protocol with QB Cam Newton during the NFC Wild Card game against the New Orleans Saints Sunday, Jan. 7. Newton was poked in the eye and also suffered a knee injury after taking a hit to the head from DT David Onyemata. A league source said the injured knee was a contributing factor to Newton staggering to the ground and having difficulty maintaining his balance. He was taken to the team's blue medical tent on the sidelines for evaluation but was not sent to the locker room, as the league's new rules require.

Fantasy Tip: Although an MRI exam on Newton's knee came back positive, the injury was not considered serious and he would have been able to play this weekend if the Panthers had advanced in the playoffs. He should be considered a low-end QB1 heading into the 2018 season.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 24-of-40 passes for 349 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the NFC Wild Card Game on Sunday, Jan. 7, against the New Orleans Saints. He also ran eight times for 37 yards.

Newton even left the game briefly after a hard hit shook him up, forcing Derek Anderson into the game briefly. He finished the regular season with 3,302 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and six more scores on the ground.

But Newton punched in a rushing touchdown in the final minute of regulation to send the Panthers to the playoffs. Unfortunately, he didn't do much for his fantasy owners in their playoff games.

Fantasy Tip: The Packers have allowed 263 passing yards per game, and the 11 touchdowns through the air allowed is tied for most in the league. Newton hasn't thrown for 200 yards in three games, and he has some upside in the latter portion of the QB1 discussion.

Panthers | Cam Newton does it with his feet

Sun, 10 Dec 2017 14:06:39 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed just 13 of his 25 pass attempts for 137 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 14 against the Minnesota Vikings. He also had 11 runs for 70 yards, including a 62-yard scamper setting up the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Fantasy Tip: Newton had his struggles against a good Vikings defense, and the line would've been even worse if not for his long run in the final two minutes. He should find more room to operate against a Packers defense which allowed 21 points to the Browns in an overtime win.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 21-of-35 passes for 254 yards and four touchdowns in the team's Week 10 win Monday, Nov. 13, versus the Miami Dolphins. He also added 95 rushing yards on just five carries.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has had an up-and-down year, but it's games like this one that prove he still might be in the upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks when it comes to fantasy football. The former No. 1 overall draft pick was pretty much able to do whatever he wanted, and with that potential on any given week, he's still very much a legitimate QB1. With the Panthers cruising right now, don't be surprised if Newton keeps it going.

Panthers | Cam Newton fully participates

Fri, 10 Nov 2017 15:37:11 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) practiced in full on Friday, Nov. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been on the injury report all season due to his surgically repaired shoulder, but he hasn't missed any starts. Start him as you normally would in fantasy against a Miami pass defense ranking 19th in the NFL, with 23 pass plays of 20 or more yards allowed.

Panthers | Cam Newton listed as limited

Thu, 09 Nov 2017 11:46:40 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) was limited during practice Thursday, Nov. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has been limited during practice over the last few weeks but should be ready to play in Week 10. He has been held to under 250 yards passing in each of the last four games but has rushed for at least 50 yards in three of those games. He can be a low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback this week but is not a must-start option like in the past.
