Panthers | Cam Newton does not start

Sun, 04 Dec 2016 17:36:21 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton did not start in the Week 13 game against the Seattle Seahawks due to disciplinary reasons, according to reports. The decision was head coach Ron Rivera's, and Newton is healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Derek Anderson started and promptly through an interception on the first play from scrimmage, so it's unlikely the punishment will last very long.

Panthers | Cam Newton welcomes New Orleans

Wed, 16 Nov 2016 20:45:59 -0800

Fantasy Tip: Newton has struggled over the past three games, tossing just two TDs and running for another, but he should roll against a Saints pass defense which ranks dead last in the NFL, allowing 292.7 yards per game through nine outings.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton went 14-for-27 for 212 yards against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 8. He also rushed for 43 yards on seven carries during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was not asked to do much after the team opened up a big lead early in the game, so he threw for less than 30 times for only the second time this season. He is scheduled to face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 9 and can be a fine starting option in all fantasy leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Newton posted decent numbers in his first game back from the concussion and will continue to run the ball when he needs to moving forward. He will be facing a solid Arizona Cardinals defense in Week 8 but can be a starting option in all leagues.

Wed, 12 Oct 2016 15:57:05 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (concussion) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Panthers | Cam Newton making progress

Tue, 11 Oct 2016 10:31:44 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (concussion) participated in some football specific drills Monday, Oct. 10.

Fantasy Tip: The reigning league MVP is nearing the end of the league's five-step concussion protocol and appears to be trending towards getting the start in Week 6 against the New Orleans Saints. Backup Derek Anderson was mostly dreadful in his first start since 2014 in a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night, sending the Panthers to 1-4 and into the NFC South basement with the Saints. Newton is still very much a QB1, but it is becoming obvious his owners led a bit of a charmed life last season.

Panthers | Cam Newton will not play Week 5

Sat, 08 Oct 2016 10:10:19 -0700

Updating a previous story, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 5 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Fantasy Tip: Newton made some progress through the concussion protocol this week and should probably be considered a good bet to play next week at the New Orleans Saints based on that information. Derek Anderson will get the start this week and should be considered a fine option for desperate owners of Newton as well as a solid bye-week replacement for Blake Bortles and Drew Brees.

Panthers | No practice again for Cam Newton

Sat, 08 Oct 2016 09:20:01 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (concussion) did not practice Saturday, Oct. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has not practiced all week and is highly unlikely to play Monday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It's too bad for his owners, especially since the Bucs have been ravaged by injuries. Derek Anderson will start in his place if he can't go and makes for a fine low-end QB1 option as well as a cheap high-upside DFS play.

Panthers | Cam Newton fined

Sat, 08 Oct 2016 08:07:33 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was fined $9,115 by the National Football League for taunting during Week 4's game against the Atlanta Falcons, after flipping a football in the face of LB Deion Jones.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was later knocked out of the game on a hit from Jones and remains in the concussion protocol, meaning that he is likely to miss Week 5's contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. QB Derek Anderson is expected to start but he is only worth using in two-quarterback fantasy leagues as a bye week replacement.

Fri, 07 Oct 2016 07:55:52 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (concussion) is out of practice Friday, Oct. 7.

Panthers | Cam Newton idle Thursday

Thu, 06 Oct 2016 08:28:53 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (concussion) is out of practice Thursday, Oct. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Newton plays on Monday night, which makes it even tougher to play him in fantasy this week. If you have a capable backup, that may be the safest route.

Panthers | Cam Newton out of practice

Wed, 05 Oct 2016 08:58:20 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (concussion) is out of practice Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Newton is a question mark against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week, but if he's able to suit up, he'll be a midrange QB1.

Panthers | Cam Newton's status unknown for Week 5

Mon, 03 Oct 2016 10:46:32 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (head) suffered a concussion in a Week 4 loss against the Atlanta Falcons, and head coach Ron Rivera admitted he has "no idea" about whether or not Newton will be able to play Monday, Oct. 10, versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Fantasy Tip: Owners figure to be in limbo until at least Thursday given the fact Carolina doesn't play until next Monday, so they should prepare for now as if Newton will not be able to play. While he lacks Newton's obvious upside, Derek Anderson has proven himself to be a capable NFL backup, making him worthy of a fantasy start versus a below-average secondary if it comes to that.

Panthers | Cam Newton suffered concussion

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 15:59:38 -0700

Updating a previous report, the Carolina Panthers confirmed QB Cam Newton (concussion) suffered a concussion in the Week 4 game against the Atlanta Falcons. QB Derek Anderson finished the game in his absence.

Fantasy Tip: Newton will be in the league's concussion protocol after getting smashed at the goal-line trying for a conversion in Sunday's loss. It's uncertain if he will be forced to miss time, but if he is unable to play in Week 5 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night it would be Derek Anderson getting the nod.

Panthers | Cam Newton has a decent outing

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 14:49:22 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (head) went 14-for-25 for 165 yards and one touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 4, before he left the game with an injury. He also rushed for 30 yards on five carries.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see if Newton is dealing with a concussion and if he will have to miss Week 5. He will be a risky option because the Panthers play on Monday Night Football and would not have many options to choose from if he is ruled out. Derek Anderson would start if Newton is not able to play but is not a strong option.

Panthers | Cam Newton evaluated for concussion

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 12:46:35 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (head) is in concussion protocol following an injury suffered Sunday, Oct. 2, against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Tip: There's no sugarcoating that this could be a disaster for Carolina if Newton is out for an extended period. For now, it's too soon to tell. Derek Anderson becomes the No. 1 QB for the moment, which could result in a fantasy downgrade of almost all of the Panthers' offensive weapons.

Panthers | Cam Newton twists ankle

Mon, 26 Sep 2016 05:48:10 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) twisted his ankle in Week 3, but he's in the facility Monday, Sept. 26, and feels fine.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was 21-for-35 for 262 yards, no touchdowns and three INTs in a brilliant effort by the Minnesota Vikings defense. Newton has a favorable matchup against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 4, and he remains an elite option at the position.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 24 of 40 pass attempts for 353 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in the Week 2 game against the San Francisco 49ers. He also rushed six times for 37 yards.

Panthers | Cam Newton practices

Wed, 14 Sep 2016 09:18:31 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton practiced Wednesday, Sept. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Newton took a number of heavy hits during the Week 1 game against the Denver Broncos Thursday, Sept. 8, but he has shown no concussion symptoms and practicing Wednesday is another sign he's healthy. Newton remains a set-and-forget quarterback in all settings, and he stands to have antoher solid game in Week 2 with Carolina hosting the San Francisco 49ers.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has shown no symptoms of a concussion following the club's Week 1 loss to the Denver Broncos and is expected to play against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2.

Fantasy Tip: Newton took a well-publicized beating that included shots to the head last Thursday night, but head coach Ron Rivera labeled his condition as "playing-the-game sore" so expect Newton to be full bore in Week 2. Start him in all leagues.

Panthers | Cam Newton hit hard in loss

Thu, 08 Sep 2016 21:25:31 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 18 of his 33 passes for 194 yards, a touchdown and an interception and ran 11 times for 54 yards and a touchdown in a 21-20 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 1. He was sacked three times and took at least three blows to the head.

Fantasy Tip: Denver pressured Newton early and often, and despite a mediocre night throwing the ball, he still salvaged a solid performance thanks to his rushing stats. His durability and dual-threat ability should result in high-end QB1 production on a routine basis.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (leg) limped off against the Denver Broncos Thursday, Sept. 8, and had his right leg checked by trainers. He was able to return without missing a series.

Fantasy Tip: Newton went down awkwardly on a sack, but it appears he avoided any type of serious injury. He should be one of the top quarterbacks in all formats on a weekly basis.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 13 of his 29 passes for 100 yards and two interceptions and had one carry for nine yards against the New England Patriots Friday, Aug. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Don't read too much into Newton's poor outing. His running ability and improved targets in the passing game should ensure another season of high-end QB1 production.

Panthers | Cam Newton altering cadence

Sun, 31 Jul 2016 23:33:31 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton and the rest of the offense are changing their pre-snap terminology this season to prevent defenses picking up on their play calling.

Fantasy Tip: This is something most teams do, and it doesn't affect much. Newton threw for 3,837 yards and 35 touchdowns with 10 interceptions during his MVP campaign. He also rushed for 636 yards and 10 scores. He remains a high-end QB1 in fantasy.

Panthers | Cam Newton can still improve

Thu, 19 May 2016 15:39:42 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton still has an awful lot of room to grow, in the words of head coach Ron Rivera. "As he continues to learn and understand more and more about offensive and defensive plays, his decision-making is going to be even better," Rivera said. "As long as he continues to stay healthy and keep getting better physically and work on his base fundamentals, I think the young man is going to get better."

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to envision Newton playing better after the season he had last year, but there were some games where he was erratic. He's one of the biggest dual threats in the game today and should be a consideration for the top fantasy quarterback spot.

Panthers | Cam Newton expected to be at OTAs

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 10:23:53 -0700

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera expects QB Cam Newton to be on the field for the start of organized team activities Monday, April 25.

Fantasy Tip: Newton is definitely a top-tier QB1 after taking home MVP honors last year while throwing for 3,837 yards and 35 touchdowns and running for another 636 yards and 10 scores. It'll be tough matching those numbers in 2016, but Newton's ability to make noise with his arms and legs is unmatched right now.

Panthers | Cam Newton reacts to fumble

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 08:05:52 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he didn't dive after a second-half fumble in the Super Bowl because of the way his leg was positioned. "I don't dive on one fumble because the way my leg was - it could have been (contorted) in a way," Newton said. "OK, you say my effort. I didn't dive down. I fumbled. That's fine. But we didn't lose that game because of that fumble. I can tell you that."

Fantasy Tip: Newton has his critics, but what can't be questioned is that he vaulted himself into the elite club of fantasy quarterbacks. He'll be among the top four or five QBs taken in drafts at worst.

Panthers | Cam Newton held out of end zone

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 20:00:06 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 18 of 41 passes for 265 yards and an interception and carried six times for 45 yards in a 24-10 loss to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 Sunday, Feb. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was under constant pressure from the stout Denver defense, and although his season ended on a sour note, he should still be considered one of the top fantasy quarterbacks when the 2016 season rolls around.

Sat, 06 Feb 2016 19:06:45 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was named the 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year Saturday, Feb. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Thanks to his improvements as a passer, Newton went from a QB1 to an elite fantasy option at his position in 2015. With receiver Kelvin Benjamin returning next year, Newton could actually be even better.

Panthers | Cam Newton fourth QB to reach 50 TDs

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 15:01:37 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton reached 50 combined passing and rushing touchdowns in the NFC Championship Game, making him only the fourth quarterback in league history to reach the Super Bowl with that many scores. Surprisingly, the three previous quarterbacks to have at least 50 combined passing and rushing touchdowns entering the Super Bowl all lost the game, by a combined 60 points.

Fantasy Tip: The other quarterbacks are Peyton Manning (60 touchdowns in 2013), Tom Brady (57; 2007) and Dan Marino (55; 1984). The 0-3 record would seem to be a bit of an anomaly at first blush, but each quarterback faced a dominant defense in the Super Bowl during their career year and were turned away. History is working against Newton as he attempts to lead the Panthers to their first championship in team history.

Panthers | Carolina efficient in red zone

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 13:05:23 -0800

The Carolina Panthers and QB Cam Newton scored a touchdown on 68% of their red zone drives during the regular season. Only the Detroit Lions (69%) were better in the red zone.

Fantasy Tip: They'll need to keep that trend going in the Super Bowl against the No. 1 defense in the Denver Broncos if they want to win the game. Surprisingly, Denver wasn't that good defending down in the red zone this year, and Newton presents plenty of problems with his legs and his arm near the touchdown stripe.

Panthers | Cam Newton good in play action

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 11:12:51 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton had nine touchdowns on play-action passes this year, which was second to only New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (10). The Denver Broncos allowed just 87 play-action pass attempts this year (second-fewest), 54% completion percentage on those plays (ranked second) and just two touchdowns (tied for second-fewest).

Fantasy Tip: It'll all come back to how well the Panthers can run against a strong run-stopping unit in Denver. If Carolina runs the ball effectively, Newton should have more success on play-action plays in Super Bowl 50.

Panthers | Cam Newton excellent in red zone

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 14:30:02 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has a 105.6 passer rating and has posted a 39:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio in the red zone since 2014. He's thrown 26 red zone touchdowns this year without a single interception. The Denver Broncos ranked 20th in red zone efficiency in 2015, with 22 touchdowns allowed in 37 red zone possessions.

Fantasy Tip: The Broncos, the NFL's No. 1 defense this year, will have their hands full with Newton in the big game. His ability to make plays with his feet and in the pocket separate him from most other quarterbacks the Broncos have faced this year. It's hard to envision Denver slowing Newton down for four full quarters.

Panthers | Cam Newton improved from pocket

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 14:33:28 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has improved as a pocket passer since his rookie season in 2011. In his first year, he had 20 touchdowns and 16 interceptions from the pocket, compared to 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions from the pocket in 2015. Newton has 21 touchdowns and two interceptions from the pocket in the last 10 games.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has matured before all of our eyes this year and is the favorite to win the MVP award. The Denver Broncos would like to keep Newton in the pocket as much as possible, but if he plays like he has for most of the season, it might not matter in the end.

Panthers | Cam Newton to struggle passing?

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 13:11:22 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was second in the NFL with 10 games of 100-plus passer rating in 2015, while the Denver Broncos did not allow a single 100-plus rating to any quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: It's your typical unstoppable force against an immovable object. Newton may not find as much success passing in the Super Bowl, but his running ability could give him better opportunities through the air. It really depends on how quick and effective Denver's pass rush is.
