Panthers | Cam Newton held out of end zone

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 20:00:06 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 18 of 41 passes for 265 yards and an interception and carried six times for 45 yards in a 24-10 loss to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 Sunday, Feb. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Newton was under constant pressure from the stout Denver defense, and although his season ended on a sour note, he should still be considered one of the top fantasy quarterbacks when the 2016 season rolls around.

Panthers | Cam Newton takes home some hardware

Sat, 06 Feb 2016 19:06:45 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was named the 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year Saturday, Feb. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Thanks to his improvements as a passer, Newton went from a QB1 to an elite fantasy option at his position in 2015. With receiver Kelvin Benjamin returning next year, Newton could actually be even better.

Panthers | Cam Newton fourth QB to reach 50 TDs

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 15:01:37 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton reached 50 combined passing and rushing touchdowns in the NFC Championship Game, making him only the fourth quarterback in league history to reach the Super Bowl with that many scores. Surprisingly, the three previous quarterbacks to have at least 50 combined passing and rushing touchdowns entering the Super Bowl all lost the game, by a combined 60 points.

Fantasy Tip: The other quarterbacks are Peyton Manning (60 touchdowns in 2013), Tom Brady (57; 2007) and Dan Marino (55; 1984). The 0-3 record would seem to be a bit of an anomaly at first blush, but each quarterback faced a dominant defense in the Super Bowl during their career year and were turned away. History is working against Newton as he attempts to lead the Panthers to their first championship in team history.

Panthers | Carolina efficient in red zone

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 13:05:23 -0800

The Carolina Panthers and QB Cam Newton scored a touchdown on 68% of their red zone drives during the regular season. Only the Detroit Lions (69%) were better in the red zone.

Fantasy Tip: They'll need to keep that trend going in the Super Bowl against the No. 1 defense in the Denver Broncos if they want to win the game. Surprisingly, Denver wasn't that good defending down in the red zone this year, and Newton presents plenty of problems with his legs and his arm near the touchdown stripe.

Panthers | Cam Newton good in play action

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 11:12:51 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton had nine touchdowns on play-action passes this year, which was second to only New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (10). The Denver Broncos allowed just 87 play-action pass attempts this year (second-fewest), 54% completion percentage on those plays (ranked second) and just two touchdowns (tied for second-fewest).

Fantasy Tip: It'll all come back to how well the Panthers can run against a strong run-stopping unit in Denver. If Carolina runs the ball effectively, Newton should have more success on play-action plays in Super Bowl 50.

Panthers | Cam Newton excellent in red zone

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 14:30:02 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has a 105.6 passer rating and has posted a 39:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio in the red zone since 2014. He's thrown 26 red zone touchdowns this year without a single interception. The Denver Broncos ranked 20th in red zone efficiency in 2015, with 22 touchdowns allowed in 37 red zone possessions.

Fantasy Tip: The Broncos, the NFL's No. 1 defense this year, will have their hands full with Newton in the big game. His ability to make plays with his feet and in the pocket separate him from most other quarterbacks the Broncos have faced this year. It's hard to envision Denver slowing Newton down for four full quarters.

Panthers | Cam Newton improved from pocket

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 14:33:28 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has improved as a pocket passer since his rookie season in 2011. In his first year, he had 20 touchdowns and 16 interceptions from the pocket, compared to 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions from the pocket in 2015. Newton has 21 touchdowns and two interceptions from the pocket in the last 10 games.

Fantasy Tip: Newton has matured before all of our eyes this year and is the favorite to win the MVP award. The Denver Broncos would like to keep Newton in the pocket as much as possible, but if he plays like he has for most of the season, it might not matter in the end.

Panthers | Cam Newton to struggle passing?

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 13:11:22 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was second in the NFL with 10 games of 100-plus passer rating in 2015, while the Denver Broncos did not allow a single 100-plus rating to any quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: It's your typical unstoppable force against an immovable object. Newton may not find as much success passing in the Super Bowl, but his running ability could give him better opportunities through the air. It really depends on how quick and effective Denver's pass rush is.

Panthers | Carolina leans on ground game

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 09:46:50 -0800

The Carolina Panthers and QB Cam Newton ran the ball by design on 46% of their offensive plays this year, which was highest in the NFL. The Denver Broncos allowed just 3.28 yards per rush in 2015, which was the fewest in the NFL.

Fantasy Tip: A big reason why the Panthers ran the ball so much is the versatility of Newton behind center. But Jonathan Stewart and the offensive line also excelled on the ground, and they are tough to stop. There's a reason why they've gone 31 straight games with at least 100 yards on the ground. The Broncos have a tall task in stopping them.

Panthers | Cam Newton performed when pressured

Tue, 26 Jan 2016 07:24:10 -0800

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was sacked four or more times twice in the 2015 season, and his numbers didn't suffer. He was 21-for-25 (84.0%) for 217 yards and a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans, who sacked him four times in Week 10. He was 21-for-26 (80.8%) for 293 yards and two touchdowns while being sacked five times in Week 17 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He didn't throw an interception in either game. The Denver Broncos, Newton's Super Bowl opponent, led the NFL with 53 sacks this season.

Fantasy Tip: Newton had a phenomenal season, and he has likely vaulted himself into the elite category with Andrew Luck and Aaron Rodgers heading into fantasy drafts next season.
