Mon, 13 May 2013 10:45:23 -0700 Detroit Tigers OF Andy Dirks has some experience in center field and OF Avisail Garcia can also play center, having started 44 games there last summer with Double-A Eerie. OF Torii Hunter has plenty of experience in the position, too, so the Tigers have plenty of options to play center field with OF Austin Jackson (hamstring) on the disabled list. OF Don Kelly started the last two games in center field over the weekend. Garcia's natural role is as a corner outfielder, though, and he hit .432 (16-for-37) with a double, a home run and four RBIs in eight games with Triple-A Toledo. Fantasy Tip: Kelly was likely a temporary solution to the problem over the weekend. Now that Jackson is out for two weeks, expect either Dirks or Hunter to man center field regularly, allowing Garcia to play a corner outfield spot. Garcia may not play every day, however, but for those speculating on increased playing time in cavernous mixed leagues, Garcia is your best bet over Kelly or Matt Tuiasosopo.
Mon, 13 May 2013 09:58:29 -0700 The Detroit Tigers placed OF Austin Jackson (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring pull Monday, May 13, and recalled OF Avisail Garcia from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. Jackson's DL stint will be retroactive to May 12. Fantasy Tip: Don Kelly started in center field yesterday with Jackson out, but he might have just been a one-game replacement. Although he doesn't have the range he once had, Torii Hunter could slide over to center, which would allow the Tigers to place Garcia in right field. Garcia's season is off to a slow start thanks to a heel injury, but he represents the most upside out of the group that includes Kelly and Matt Tuiasosopo. Andy Dirks should continue to see consistent playing time in left. The outfield arrangement could be very fluid, though, so deep mixed leaguers speculating on increased playing time might have to be patient.
Sun, 05 May 2013 20:47:49 -0700 Detroit Tigers OF Avisail Garcia (finger) is nursing a finger injury at Triple-A Toledo, and he did not play over the weekend. However, he is nearing a return, as his injury is not considered serious.
Wed, 01 May 2013 12:33:25 -0700 The Detroit Tigers activated OF Avisail Garcia (heel) from the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, May 1, and optioned him to Triple-A Toledo. Fantasy Tip: Garcia rose from Class A to starting in right field for the Tigers last year, and they have realized that he needs much more seasoning in the minors. His heel injury set him back this spring. Expect him to remain in the minors for some time, making him only a realistic option at the moment in keeper leagues.
Tue, 26 Mar 2013 10:50:11 -0700 The Detroit Tigers placed OF Avisail Garcia (heel) on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, March 26, and reassigned P Jose Alvarez, C Brad Davis and 3B Kevin Russo to minor league camp. P Luke Putkonen was optioned to Triple-A Toledo. Fantasy Tip: This virtually ensures that Quintin Berry will be the fourth outfielder on the opening day roster. He'll split time in left field with Andy Dirks mainly.
Fri, 22 Mar 2013 10:03:26 -0700 Detroit Tigers OF Avisail Garcia (heel) was off crutches and put weight on his right foot Thursday, March 21, for the first time since bruising his right heel last weekend. There is no timetable for his return, though, and he might not be ready for opening day. Even if he returns soon, he's unlikely to win the right field job. Fantasy Tip: Garcia seems destined to start the season in the minors now, especially after his quick ascent to the majors last season. He could definitely use some more seasoning and time to get his foot completely healthy.
Fri, 01 Mar 2013 21:45:36 -0800 The Detroit Tigers have plenty of competition in left field, with OFs Nick Castellanos and Avisail Garcia, Andy Dirks, Quintin Berry, Brennan Boesch and Don Kelly all vying for time at the position.
Tue, 19 Feb 2013 18:44:01 -0800 Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced Tuesday, Feb. 19, that OFs Quintin Berry (center), Nick Castellanos (left) and Avisail Garcia (right) will comprise the starting outfield in the team's first Grapefruit League spring game Friday, Feb. 22, against the Atlanta Braves. "We'll play everybody. I'm going to play all the kids, get our guys ready," Leyland said. "I like to do that. I like playing the kids."
Sun, 17 Feb 2013 21:54:33 -0800 Detroit Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said Sunday, Feb. 17, that 3B Nick Castellanos and OF Avisail Garcia are intriguing options, but he does not want to stunt their development by promoting them to the big leagues if their playing time is going to be limited. Garcia platooned in right field last September, but that was after the minor league season had concluded.
Tue, 05 Feb 2013 12:34:27 -0800 Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski indicated that he doesn't think OFs Avisail Garcia and Nick Castellanos are capable of being part-time players to platoon with OF Andy Dirks in left field. "With Garcia and Castellanos, and I'll put them both in the same boat — Garcia the better outfielder, Castellanos is going to be a quality hitter," Dombrowski said. "They're not going to come up and only play 30 or 40 games for us at this time." Dirks hit incredibly well against right-handers last year, and he wasn't bad against lefties, either, hitting .274 against them. OF Brennan Boesch, Quintin Berry and Don Kelly all hit left-handed like Dirks. However, Dombrowski said Boesch still has a shot to win the starting job from Dirks in spring training.
