The San Diego Padres have several open starting rotation spots after SPs Clayton Richard, Edinson Volquez and Jason Marquis. Ps Anthony Bass, Casey Kelly, Tyson Ross, Eric Stults, Freddy Garcia and Robbie Erlin are all in the picture. SP Tim Stauffer (elbow) is about two weeks behind the other pitchers. SPs Andrew Cashner (thumb), Joe Wieland (elbow) and Cory Luebke (elbow) aren't options because they are rehabbing from injuries. Cashner is expected to be back on a mound by March 1 and Wieland and Luebke won't return until midseason or later after having Tommy John surgery.

San Diego Padres SP Casey Kelly will not start for the rest of the season. The Padres have decided to shut down Kelly, and SP Anthony Bass will start Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Miller Park in Milwaukee. Padres manager Bud Black said it was also unlikely that Kelly would pitch in the Arizona Fall League as previously scheduled. "He hasn't bounced back after his last couple starts," said Black. "His arm is just a little sore. He wanted to make his last start. I took the ball."

In six appearances since returning from the disabled list on Sept. 7, San Diego Padres RP Anthony Bass has given up four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks in 8 1/3 innings over six appearances.

The San Diego Padres activated SP Anthony Bass (shoulder) from the disabled list Tuesday, Sept. 4, and recalled RP Brad Boxberger, INF Andrew Parrino and C Ali Solis. SP Ross Ohlendorf and C Eddy Rodriguez were designated for assignment.

The San Diego Padres are expected to activate P Anthony Bass (shoulder) from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, Sept. 4. Manager Bud Black said RP Brad Boxberger will also be promoted from Triple-A Tucson.

San Diego Padres Ps Anthony Bass (shoulder) and Andrew Cashner (lat) are expected to come off the 15-day disabled list after each completes one more rehab appearance. Cashner is expected to pitch Friday, Aug. 31, while Bass is slated to work Sunday, Sept. 2.

San Diego Padres SP Casey Kelly (elbow) is the leading candidate to enter the rotation to take the spot of SP Jason Marquis (wrist). Kelly made his third rehab start with Double-A San Antonio Tuesday, Aug. 21. Other possibilities include Ps Thad Weber and Ross Ohlendorf. SPs Andrew Cashner and Anthony Bass are expected to rejoin the team in September.

San Diego Padres SPs Anthony Bass (shoulder) and Andrew Cashner (lat) threw 30 pitches Wednesday, Aug. 8. They are scheduled to fly to Arizona Friday, Aug. 10, and may throw bullpen sessions as well as simulated games.
