Ravens | Ryan Mallett keeps foot on the gas

Sat, 20 Aug 2016 22:19:16 -0700

Baltimore Ravens QB Ryan Mallett completed six of his eight pass attempts for 47 yards and a touchdown in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the Indianapolis Colts. He did nothing to hurt his status as the primary backup to QB Joe Flacco.

Ravens | Joe Flacco will miss workouts

Mon, 23 May 2016 17:16:13 -0700

Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco (knee) will miss all of the organized team activities this offseason because he is still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Flacco said he has made big improvements in his recovery, and head coach John Harbaugh said Flacco should be ready for training camp. QB Ryan Mallett will work with the first-team offense during the workouts.

Fantasy Tip: Flacco still has a few months to recover from his injury if he wants to be ready for camp. He threw 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions before suffering the injury in 2015 but did throw at least 20 touchdowns in five of his previous six seasons. Flacco probably should be considered a No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 16:32:13 -0800

Baltimore Ravens QB Ryan Mallett won his team debut, completing 28 of his 41 passes for 274 yards and a touchdown in a 20-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett was efficient as the Ravens pulled off the surprise win. He should be under center next week against the Cincinnati Bengals, but he is a complete roll of the dice at FantasyScore.

Ravens | Ryan Mallett expected to face PIT

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 07:22:21 -0800

Baltimore Ravens QB Ryan Mallett is expected to receive the start in Week 16's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, as a tryout for the 2016 season, according to multiple sources.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) was signed by the Ravens less than two weeks ago but will need time to learn their offensive playbook, so he should be avoided in all fantasy formats.

Ravens | Baltimore non-committal on QB

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 13:51:12 -0800

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said he isn't naming a starting quarterback for Week 15 against the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, Dec. 18, even though QB Matt Schaub (chest) is listed as probable. QB Jimmy Clausen is another option to start against the Chiefs. Clausen took at least half of practice repetitions both Wednesday, Dec. 16, and Thursday, Dec. 17, according to offensive coordinator Marc Trestman. Harbaugh said Schaub has a chance to be 100% healthy by Sunday, Dec. 20. It's highly unlikely that QB Ryan Mallett will see playing time Sunday after being signed this week.

Fantasy Tip: Either way you slice it, neither Baltimore quarterback is worth starting on FantasyScore as a deep sleeper against a surging Chiefs defense.

Ravens | Ryan Mallett could see the field

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 09:20:00 -0800

Baltimore Ravens QB Ryan Mallett could see the field this year, according to head coach John Harbaugh. "He's on the team. He absolutely has a chance," Harbaugh said.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett won't be available on FantasyScore this week, but chances are he won't start anyway over either Matt Schaub or Jimmy Clausen. The Ravens quarterback situation is a mess and you shouldn't go anywhere near it for fantasy purposes.

Ravens | Ryan Mallett worked through issues

Tue, 15 Dec 2015 09:08:36 -0800

Baltimore Ravens QB Ryan Mallett assured the team that he has received professional help for the personal issues that caused him to miss a meeting and a flight and to be cut by the Houston Texans this year, according to a league source. Head coach John Harbaugh alluded to "personal things" that Mallett "had to work through" since being released by Houston. Mallett's role will be determined by how quickly he picks up Baltimore's offense.

Fantasy Tip: There is still a chance that Matt Schaub can suit up against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs are on a roll both offensive and defensively, and Schaub would be a bad choice for any fantasy lineup in Week 15. Mallett will not be available on FantasyScore this week.

Ravens | Ryan Mallett can earn $2.5 million

Tue, 15 Dec 2015 06:05:38 -0800

Updating a previous report, Baltimore Ravens QB Ryan Mallett can earn up to $2.5 million in 2016 with his new contract.

Fantasy Tip: It's probably a stretch that Mallett comes off the street and plays this week against the Kansas City Chiefs. Avoid him in fantasy.

Ravens | Ryan Mallett joining Baltimore

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 12:00:42 -0800

Free-agent QB Ryan Mallett (Texans) will be signing an undisclosed deal with the Baltimore Ravens Monday, Dec. 14, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Joe Flacco is out for the year, Matt Schaub is hurt and Jimmy Clausen stunk it up in Week 14. It really can't get any worse for the Ravens at quarterback. It's unclear if Mallett will have a chance to start to close out the year. He has a big arm, but it'll take time for him to learn the system. He's not attractive to fantasy owners right now.

Jets | Ryan Mallett not an option for Jets

Mon, 02 Nov 2015 10:10:17 -0800

Free-agent QB Ryan Mallett (Texans) will not be an option for the New York Jets as they look to add another quarterback. Buffalo Bills QB Josh Johnson might make some sense if he becomes available, since he has a working knowledge of the playbook.

Bills | Unlikely to sign Ryan Mallett

Wed, 28 Oct 2015 09:32:16 -0700

Free-agent QB Ryan Mallett (Texans) could have a suitor in the Buffalo Bills, but it's unlikely that they'd sign him. QB Tyrod Taylor (knee) is expected to be back after the bye week, and Buffalo isn't believed to be looking to replace QB EJ Manuel. Also, QB Josh Johnson is another option for the Bills, and he has knowledge of offensive coordinator Greg Roman's system.

Texans | Houston cuts Ryan Mallett

Tue, 27 Oct 2015 09:23:54 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett was released Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Brian Hoyer likely will be the Texans starting quarterback for the rest of the season with Mallett no longer on the team. He does have some weapons to work with in the passing game but may see more pressure since Arian Foster is out for the season. Hoyer probably will not be a starting fantasy options most weeks.

Texans | Ryan Mallett to be cut?

Tue, 27 Oct 2015 09:06:52 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett missed a flight before the Week 7 game against the Miami Dolphins Saturday, Oct. 24, and head coach Bill O'Brien was livid enough that he initially considered cutting Mallett immediately, according to the Houston Chronicle. The Texans ended up keeping Mallett because he's the only other quarterback behind QB Brian Hoyer on roster. It's still possible that Mallett is released, but they need to find another quarterback to replace him first. Saturday was the second known time that Mallett was late for a team activity.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett has worn out his welcome in Houston. Perhaps he'll get another chance with another team if the Texans cut him. More importantly, though, is that Hoyer is now firmly entrenched as the starting QB for this team, and he can be a successful deep sleeper on FantasyScore in the right matchups, but losing Arian Foster (Achilles') last weekend definitely hurts this offense immensely.

Texans | Ryan Mallett misses team flight

Sun, 25 Oct 2015 17:36:34 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett missed the team's charter flight to South Florida for the Week 7 game against the Miami Dolphins due to the fact he "got caught in traffic," Mallett said Sunday, Oct. 25.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) is the backup, and he was in uniform after flying commercial on his own. It's uncertain if he'll be disciplined by the team, but he isn't someone to bother with in FantasyScore, even when he is starting.

Texans | Brian Hoyer named starter again

Fri, 09 Oct 2015 13:34:32 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer will start against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6, head coach Bill O'Brien announced Friday, Oct. 9. Hoyer went 24-for-31 for 312 yards, two touchdowns and a late interception against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5 Thursday, Oct. 8, while replacing QB Ryan Mallett.

Fantasy Tip: While Mallett has the stronger arm to stretch the field, Hoyer ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) has been the more efficient quarterback in this back-and-forth gig. Against a weaker Jags defense, Hoyer can be an effective sleeper pick on FantasyScore, provided he isn't benched mid-game.

Texans | Houston mum on starting QB

Fri, 09 Oct 2015 07:28:50 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer or QB Ryan Mallett could start in Week 6 as head coach Bill O'Brien was mum on the quarterback situation following the Week 5 loss Thursday, Oct. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) and Mallett ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) would have a good matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars on FantasyScore. Stay tuned to see where the revolving door lands.

Texans | Ryan Mallett wanted back into game

Thu, 08 Oct 2015 21:11:11 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett said he had the wind knocked out of him against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5 and was ready to return to the game but was not permitted to do so by head coach Bill O'Brien.

Fantasy Tip: O'Brien can't seem to decide on who he wants under center, and regardless of whether it is Mallett ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) or Brian Hoyer ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) starting, a Houston quarterback has no business being in lineups at FantasyScore.

Texans | Brian Hoyer solid in relief

Thu, 08 Oct 2015 20:56:56 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer replaced QB Ryan Mallett against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5, and he completed 24 of 31 attempts for 312 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 27-20 loss.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) originally entered after Mallett ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) left with an injury, but he stayed in the rest of the way despite Mallett appearing able to return. The quarterback situation in Houston is a mess right now, and neither Hoyer nor Mallett is a smart play at FantasyScore.

Texans | Ryan Mallett exits with injury

Thu, 08 Oct 2015 18:39:33 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (undisclosed) exited against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5 with an undisclosed injury and was replaced by QB Brian Hoyer.

Fantasy Tip: Stay tuned for more specifics on Mallett's ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) injury, but since he was struggling again prior to the injury, Hoyer ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) may be run the show the rest of the way regardless of Mallett's health.

Texans | Ryan Mallett should play

Wed, 07 Oct 2015 15:15:58 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (chest) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 7, and is listed as probable for the Week 5 game against the Indianapolis Colts Thursday, Oct. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) will be the starting quarterback even though he was benched in the team's last game. Mallett has not posted great numbers this season and should not be a starting option.

Texans | Ryan Mallett has full practice

Tue, 06 Oct 2015 15:48:04 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (chest) had another full practice Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett has had his fair share of troubles so far this year, but he's still the Texans' starter. Houston has been forced to pass frequently in 2015 in order to try to keep up with their opponents, making Mallett a sneaky value play in some weeks. He's not the most reliable, but he's one of the cheaper quarterbacks on FantasyScore in Week 5.

Texans | Ryan Mallett fully participates Monday

Mon, 05 Oct 2015 16:50:32 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (chest) fully participated in the team's walkthrough Monday, Oct. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett should be fine for the game against the Indianapolis Colts Thursday, Oct. 8, and is receiving another start despite being benched in Week 4. Mallett is not a strong option for fantasy owners and should be avoided.

Texans | Ryan Mallett will remain starter

Mon, 05 Oct 2015 11:33:33 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett will be the starting quarterback for the Week 5 game against the Indianapolis Colts Thursday, Oct. 8, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett was benched during the Week 4 game because of performance but is receiving another chance at the starting job. Owners probably should avoid Mallett and look for more consistent options.

Texans | Ryan Mallett replaced in loss

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 16:22:47 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett completed 12 of 27 passes for 150 yards and an interception and was replaced by QB Brian Hoyer in a 48-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 4. Hoyer finished 17 of 30 for 232 yards and two touchdowns.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) looked like the better quarterback, albeit after the game was well out of hand. Neither Mallett ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) nor Hoyer should be used at FantasyScore.

Texans | Ryan Mallett benched during Week 4

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 13:32:10 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett was benched in favor of QB Brian Hoyer during Week 4's game against the Atlanta Falcons. Mallett went 12-for-37 for 150 yards and one interception before giving way to Hoyer, who was 17-for-30 with 232 yards and two touchdowns.

Fantasy Tip: Houston was trailing Atlanta by 42 points at the time of the quarterback change and had been held scoreless up to that point. It is unknown who will start Week 5's game against the Indianapolis Colts but neither Mallett ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) nor Hoyer ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) is an ideal FantasyScore option.

Texans | Ryan Mallett probable

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 16:14:21 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (chest) was limited during practice Friday, Oct. 2, and is listed as probable for the Week 4 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has posted some decent numbers in his two starts but has two touchdowns and two interceptions during that span. Owners should be able to find better options to use as their starting quarterback this week.

Texans | Ryan Mallett doing fine

Thu, 01 Oct 2015 11:30:09 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (chest) was limited in practice again Thursday, Oct. 1, and is "doing fine."

Fantasy Tip: Mallett ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) should start again in Week 4 against the Atlanta Falcons. He's a lackluster daily pick, but the Texans could be forced to pass often to play catchup with a hot Atlanta offense.

Texans | Limited practice for Ryan Mallett

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 15:52:57 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (chest) was limited in practice Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Fantasy Tip: When a player practices this early in the week, it's usual a good sign that they'll play. Mallett ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) could be a good value play on FantasyScore as Houston may be forced to pass frequently against the Atlanta Falcons.

Texans | Ryan Mallett falls in Week 2 outing

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 15:18:12 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett threw for 244 yards and one touchdown in a 24-17 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) likely didn't do anything to make the Texans switch back to Brian Hoyer, but he didn't do much to impress either. With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming up next week and the Bucs' surprising defensive attack grounding New Orleans, it could be another rough spot for Mallett.

Texans | Ryan Mallett the starter

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 14:57:16 -0700

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett was officially named the starter over QB Brian Hoyer for Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers, according to multiple sources. Hoyer started the season opener but was benched in the fourth quarter after going 18-for-36 and committing two turnovers.

Fantasy Tip: The quarterback carousel begins in Houston. Mallett ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has the bigger arm but doesn't represent a drastic improvement over Hoyer. DeAndre Hopkins ($7,600, 15.2% of cap), who caught a TD pass from Mallett late in Week 1, is the only Texan worth playing on FantasyScore against the Carolina Panthers.

Texans | Ryan Mallett set to start in Week 2

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 10:58:53 -0700

The Houston Texans are preparing to use QB Ryan Mallett over QB Brian Hoyer in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: It seems like a desperate move this early in the year for Houston, but they'll see what they can get out of Mallett ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) against a strong Carolina defense on the road. While Mallett has a stronger arm than Hoyer, he's a minimal upgrade, if that. Do not get bold and start Mallett on FantasyScore, and about the only Houston weapon worth playing is DeAndre Hopkins ($8,800, 17.6% of cap).

Texans | Brian Hoyer out as starter?

Sun, 13 Sep 2015 18:05:18 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer was replaced by QB Ryan Mallett in a 27-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday, Sept. 13, and head coach Bill O'Brien said he didn't know if Hoyer would start Week 2.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) looked solid in relief, but if he draws the start in Week 2, he isn't an overly attractive option at FantasyScore with the Texans set to face a tough Carolina defense.

Texans | Ryan Mallett impressive in relief

Sun, 13 Sep 2015 13:56:56 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett entered Week 1's game against the Kansas City Chiefs late in the fourth quarter, replacing an ineffective Brian Hoyer. Mallett went 8-for-13 for 98 yards and a touchdown, leading the team down the field on a six-play, 59-yard scoring drive. Hoyer was 18-for-34 for 236 passing yards, with one touchdown and one interception and turned the ball over twice inside the Texans' 15-yard-line before being removed.

Fantasy Tip: Head coach Bill O'Brien did not announce who would be the starting quarterback for Week 2's game, claiming that it was too early to make a decision and adding that he would need to review the game film first. Neither Hoyer ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) nor Mallett ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) make great FantasyScore options, so you should look elsewhere when setting your Week 2 lineups.

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett missed practice Thursday, Aug. 27, because he overslept. Mallett was present for meetings later on, however. He will also be at practice Friday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett is currently the backup quarterback for the Texans, so he doesn't have any fantasy value right now.

Thu, 27 Aug 2015 13:07:57 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (personal) was not at practice Thursday, Aug. 27, due to a personal issue, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Fantasy Tip: As long as Mallett is healthy, there's really nothing to worry about here. He'll remain the backup quarterback once the season begins and should be left on waivers in fantasy leagues.

Texans | Houston not ready to name starting QB

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 13:19:05 -0700

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett have been competing for the starting quarterback job, but head coach Bill O'Brien wants to see them play more before making a decision. "I need to see a little bit more and I want to give Ryan a chance to start a game, and put some more thought into it. Then make a decision at some point whether it's next week or the week after. At some point, we'll make a decision," O'Brien said.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer and Mallett should see solid playing time in the next two preseason games, which could help in the decision for O'Brien. Neither is a strong fantasy option, so the winner of the competition will probably be only a No. 2 quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: This is a true quarterback battle. The decision may not be made until after the final preseason game. Hoyer may have an advantage considering he has more experience. Plus, he started the first preseason game. Neither should be regarded as a starting fantasy quarterback, however.

Sun, 16 Aug 2015 07:57:09 -0700

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett will be the starting quarterback for the second preseason game against the Denver Broncos Saturday, Aug. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett is competing with Brian Hoyer for the starting job, so this will be an important start for Mallett. The winner of the starting job should not be seen as more than a No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett remain in a close competition for the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien said he believes both quarterbacks could start for the team.

Fantasy Tip: The Texans likely will use the preseason to determine if Hoyer or Mallett wil start this season. Neither is a great quarterback, and they should not be seen as more than a No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues.

Texans | Houston has close QB competition

Fri, 10 Jul 2015 12:38:56 -0700

Houston Texans QBs Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer are competing for the starting quarterback job and there is no clear favorite for the job, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. Hoyer appeared to be more comfortable than Mallett during offseason workouts.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor the situation since there is a chance the team could name a starter before the beginning of training camp. The winner of the competition will have some weapons to work with one offense but likely would not be more than a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Houston Texans QBs Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer are candidates for the starting quarterback job, and head coach Bill O'Brien indicated the team may name a starting quarterback before the start of training camp.

Fantasy Tip: Mallett and Hoyer have been competing during offseason workouts, and O'Brien could make his decision based on those practices. Neither quarterback has great fantasy value and would be No. 2 fantasy quarterbacks if they win the job.

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett are both seeing time with the first-team offense during organized team activities, but head coach Bill O'Brien said there is no timetable for naming a starting quarterback.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer and Mallett likely will continue to compete for the job during training camp and the preseason. Fantasy owners should consider the winner of the job as no more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback.

Texans | Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett splitting reps

Thu, 28 May 2015 11:14:59 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer split first-team repetitions in offseason workouts Wednesday, May 27, with QB Ryan Mallett. "The tempo (stood out)," said Hoyer. "You can tell we put a lot of work in and guys were just prepared. There weren't a lot of mental mistakes. Guys came ready to go and it was exciting -- got after it a little bit."

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is currently listed as the de-facto starter on the Texans' depth chart, likely because Mallett is coming off a pectoral injury from last year. It's anyone's guess right now as to who will win the starting job in training camp. Hoyer has the experience edge, but Mallett has more upside. Neither quarterback will be anything more than a mediocre QB2 in fantasy, though.
