49ers | Colin Kaepernick to play in finale

Tue, 30 Aug 2016 10:19:16 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will play in the preseason finale, and QB Blaine Gabbert will sit out, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert appears to be the guy, but he really doesn't merit much fantasy value aside from depth. Kaepernick has more upside, but he might need a change of scenery to harness it.

49ers | QB competition still open in San Francisco

Sat, 27 Aug 2016 16:48:52 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert and QB Colin Kaepernick are still competing for the starting job, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert has done little to win the job this preseason, while Kaepernick did more to create news with his pre-game actions last night than he did with his play. The winner is a good bet to carry QB2 value at various points during the season thanks to the volume of plays head coach Chip Kelly's offense usually generate.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert likely will start Friday

Fri, 26 Aug 2016 16:53:56 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert likely will be the starting quarterback for the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26.

Fantasy Tip: It appears that Gabbert is the leading candidate for the starting job and would have to struggle to lose the job. Gabbert had some success as a starter last season but would only be a low-end No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick may start Friday

Fri, 26 Aug 2016 13:19:33 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) could start the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26, since QB Blaine Gabbert started the first two preseason games.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick and Gabbert continue to compete for the starting job but this will be Kaepernick's first time on the field this offseason. Kaepernick would be the more valuable option for fantasy owners, but neither quarterback should be a No. 1 quarterback for owners.

49ers | Vance McDonald emerging as weapon

Sun, 21 Aug 2016 21:01:22 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald has caught five passes for 92 yards from QB Blaine Gabbert through two preseason games.

Fantasy Tip: He continues to show chemistry with Gabbert, and McDonald could end up being San Francisco's best weapon in the passing game this year. He is a sneaky TE1 candidate.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert running away with QB job

Sun, 14 Aug 2016 15:25:33 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has been the "landslide favorite for weeks" in his battle with QB Colin Kaepernick, according to ESPN's Adam Caplan.

Fantasy Tip: Caplan notes head coach Chip Kelly "is trying to be fair" to Kaepernick by allowing the quarterback competition to go on this long, but Kaepernick likely missed too much time in the offseason to make it a fair fight. Expect Gabbert to be running the show in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams and make for a sneaky QB2 option for an offense that figures to be playing from behind a lot in 2016.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert likely to start Sunday

Sat, 13 Aug 2016 10:55:07 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert appears likely to start the team's preseason opener against the Houston Texans Sunday, Aug. 14, although head coach Chip Kelly hasn't made an official announcement. QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) did not practice Friday, Aug. 12, and his status for Sunday's game is uncertain.

Fantasy Tip: Whichever quarterback wins the starting job should be viewed as a low-end QB2 in the majority of seasonal leagues. Gabbert appears to have a slight edge at this point due to his knowledge of the playbook, although Kaepernick has the higher fantasy upside.

49ers | San Francisco to split QB reps in games

Wed, 10 Aug 2016 12:03:58 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QBs Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick will share snaps with the first-team offense during preseason games until the team is ready to name a starting quarterback, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Fantasy Tip: Gabbert appears to be the leading candidate for the starting job at this point, but Kaepernick would win the job if he plays well during training camp. Kaepernick would have more fantasy value than Gabbert if he is the quarterback, but neither player will be a starting option in fantasy leagues.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert heavily favored to start

Tue, 09 Aug 2016 18:09:00 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert is considered an enormous favorite to start over QB Colin Kaepernick in the regular season opener, in the opinion of beat writer Tim Kawakami.

Fantasy Tip: Nothing is engraved in stone, but it appears from the sound of things that Gabbert is grasping the new offense of Chip Kelly a little better than Kaep. Regardless, the winner of the job is nothing more than a low-end QB2 in most fantasy formats.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick holding his own

Tue, 02 Aug 2016 21:47:44 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert have taken an equal amount of reps in practice with the first-team offense so far in training camp. Both have been sharper working with would-be starters than the second team. Head coach Chip Kelly noted the preseason games will be critical.

Fantasy Tip: Kaepernick and Gabbert are battling hard for the starting job, but whomever wins the job will be a low-end QB2 at best in most fantasy leagues. The only time the San Francisco starter should be active in fantasy is out of desperation due to injuries or bye weeks or in formats which require two starting signal callers.
