After another poor outing by San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert, sources indicate there has been some talk about QB Josh X. Johnson being moved to the No. 2 slot behind QB Colin Kaepernick.
Fantasy Tip: While Johnson would still carry little fantasy value as the backup to Kaepernick, the real story here is how far Gabbert's value may have slid. When you can't even be a competent backup then alarm bills will ring.

The San Francisco 49ers will determine their backup quarterback by which candidate does not turn the ball over, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh. QBs Blaine Gabbert and McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw interceptions during the second preseason game, while QB Josh X. Johnson lost a fumble.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh likes what he has seen from QB Blaine Gabbert. "Very impressed with Blaine mentally, physically – all attributes that you'd like to see in a quarterback," Harbaugh said. "He's been very good, very solid. (He's) picked up everything very quickly. It's going well. Everything is progressing well. I think you'll watch it when you have a chance to see it today and look at it for yourself. In my eye, it looks very good."

The San Francisco 49ers may consider keeping only two quarterbacks on their final roster in order to use the extra roster spot at another position. QBs Blaine Gabbert, Josh X. Johnson, McLeod Bethel-Thompson and Kory Faulkner will compete for the No. 2 quarterback job, but Gabbert likely has an edge since his 2014 salary is fully guaranteed.

The San Francisco 49ers have decided not to pick up the fifth-year option in QB Blaine Gabbert's contract.
Wed, 12 Mar 2014 09:45:23 -0700
San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert won't be a lock to be the backup to QB Colin Kaepernick this year, and ESPN analyst and former general manager Bill Polian doesn't think Gabbert will make the 53-man roster. Head coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Trent Baalke like Gabbert, though, and they'll give him a chance. "We thought highly of Blaine as an early entry into the 2011 NFL draft," said Baalke. "He is a high-character individual that will be given every opportunity to develop within our system and we are looking forward to working with him."
Fantasy Tip: Gabbert has shown poor pocket presence in the NFL and also hasn't been able to stay healthy. He wouldn't be a very attractive backup option, even if Kaepernick were injured and missed significant time in 2014.

The San Francisco 49ers have acquired QB Blaine Gabbert from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a sixth-round draft choice.
