The Chicago Bears have several avenues they could go to free up salary cap space in 2013, but general manager Phil Emery is unlikely to restructure the contract of DE Julius Peppers. Lowering the cap figure for Peppers now would only make it grow in the future.

The Chicago Bears would save a considerable amount on the salary cap by restructuring DE Julius Peppers' contract. He is due $12.9 million in base salary in 2013 and has a salary cap charge of $16.383 million, which is approximately 13 percent of the team's entire cap. If Chicago converted $9 million of Peppers' base salary into a bonus payment it would save them $6 million against his year's cap.

It was the same knee he suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in Week 5. "My foot just got caught up under the pile and twisted the knee a little bit," Peppers said. "The knee is still healing. It's not 100 percent yet. I think it probably looked worse than it actually was."
