The Texas Rangers have claimed OF Joe Benson off waivers from the Minnesota Twins. To clear space for Benson on the 40-man roster, SP Matt Harrison (back) has been transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Minnesota Twins position players aren't required to report to camp until Friday, Feb. 15, but OF Joe Benson, SS Jamey Carroll, SS Brian Dozier, OF Aaron Hicks, OF Darin Mastroianni and 3B Trevor Plouffe all took part in informal workouts Wednesday, Feb. 13. Non-roster invitees OF Brandon Boggs, 1B Jeff Clement, INF Chris Colabello, OF Brian Dinkelman and OF Clete Thomas are also in camp working out.

Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan said he expects the team to fill the center field vacancy from within their organization next year, with OFs Darin Mastroianni, Aaron Hicks and Joe Benson (knee) competing for the position. Mastroianni will be the favorite heading into spring training. Hicks has never played at Class AAA and is likely to start at Triple-A Rochester before being brought up. Benson is expected to be fully healthy after having knee surgery in late August.

Minnesota Twins OF Joe Benson (knee) underwent left knee surgery earlier this week and will be out three to four months. Benson was ranked No. 5 on the team's prospects list before the season. He had bone chips removed from his knee Monday, Aug. 27, but doctors also found an issue with the cartilage under his kneecap. Benson is expected to be ready for spring training.

The Minnesota Twins demoted OF Joe Benson, one of their top prospects, from Triple-A Rochester to Double-A New Britain Monday, May 7. The move was to make room on the Rochester roster for OF Clete Thomas. Benson was batting just .179 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 28 games with the Red Wings.
