Wed, 02 Jan 2013 10:27:06 -0800 Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan said he expects the team to fill the center field vacancy from within their organization next year, with OFs Darin Mastroianni, Aaron Hicks and Joe Benson (knee) competing for the position. Mastroianni will be the favorite heading into spring training. Hicks has never played at Class AAA and is likely to start at Triple-A Rochester before being brought up. Benson is expected to be fully healthy after having knee surgery in late August.

Benson was ranked No. 5 on the team's prospects list before the season. He had bone chips removed from his knee Monday, Aug. 27, but doctors also found an issue with the cartilage under his kneecap. Benson is expected to be ready for spring training.

The move was to make room on the Rochester roster for OF Clete Thomas. Benson was batting just .179 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 28 games with the Red Wings.

Benson was robbed when the taxicab he was in hit a boulder and crashed. As the Spanish-speaking cab driver was making a call from his cell phone, three gunmen approached Benson. They took everything he had except for a bag that contained some baseball spikes and a few T-shirts. "When you don't speak the language, there's not much you can do," Benson said. "You can't really beg for your life. You can't ask them not to pull the trigger. You can't beg for mercy. I kind of sat there in silence, let everything happen."
