Pirates | Jose Tabata injured

Wed, 01 May 2013 14:07:20 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Jose Tabata (hamstring) left the game early with a left hamstring injury Wednesday, May 1, and he will have an MRI exam Thursday, May 2.

Fantasy Tip: An extended absence or a trip to the disabled list for Tabata would probably mean more playing time for Travis Snider. However, the Pirates could elect to recall Jerry Sands to platoon with Snider. Stay tuned on the severity of Tabata's injury.

Red Sox | Joel Hanrahan officially acquired

Wed, 26 Dec 2012 10:06:17 -0800

The Boston Red Sox have acquired RP Joel Hanrahan and 2B Brock Holt from the Pittsburgh Pirates for OF Jerry Sands, INF Ivan De Jesus, P Stolmy Pimentel and RP Mark Melancon.

Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen whether he or Andrew Bailey will close; if they'll split duties; or if Bailey will be traded. Still, this saves situation should be settled before you pick your team. Both K-friendly hurlers deserve mixed-league selections, even if their values remain in flux late in the spring.

Jason Grilli, meanwhile, is expected to handle Buccos saves. He has little experience in the role, but his 2012 renaissance revealed a highly skilled pitcher. Grilli's attractive peripherals say he's a low-end No. 2 mixed closer, but with his potential negative ERA regression, he carries significant downside at that price.

Dodgers | Blockbuster trade with Boston finalized

Sat, 25 Aug 2012 11:00:54 -0700

Confirming a previous report, the Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired SP Josh Beckett, OF Carl Crawford, 1B Adrian Gonzalez and INF Nick Punto from the Boston Red Sox, in exchange for INF Ivan De Jesus, SP Rubby De La Rosa, 1B James Loney, OF Jerry Sands and SP Allen Webster.

Fantasy Tip: A-Gon's power outage this year is well documented; his oppo-hitting style didn't mesh well with Fenway and the Green Monster. Sitting in the middle of a now potent Blue lineup and back near his Southern California home, his production should rise, but don't expect the power to suddenly re-emerge now that he's back in the NL and in another unfriendly hitting environment.

Beckett has been inconsistent and injured often in his age-32 season that has seen his K/9 drop considerably. His evolving arsenal and lack of spunk on his offerings has left him vulnerable to the long ball and unable to find any kind of rhythm. The move across the coast and to a pitcher's park is a positive, but it often takes Beckett some time to settle in.

Crawford should be ready for the start of next season after undergoing Tommy John surgery this week, but as was the case this year, his rehab could drag into spring training, making him a potential bargain in 2013 drafts.

Loney was basically a throw-in here; his good contact skills but below average power profile and struggles against lefties have capped his value. He, along with the rest of the Dodgers package sent to Boston, is purely AL-only material.

Webster and De La Rosa are promising pitching prospects that could become a factor next season in Boston's rotation.
