Cardinals | Not expecting Albert Pujols to be affected long term

Tue, 21 Jun 2011 09:01:11 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said the team does not expect 1B Albert Pujols' (forearm) recent injury to affect him over the long term. "All the medical people feel that this shouldn't be a problem," Mozeliak said. "But obviously, wrists are always a concern when you're dealing with hitters, so it's something that we'll just have to work through. In his case, he already has a pretty strong grip, as it is - meaning, as they were testing it this morning, that part, he's already ahead of the curve. With that said, most doctors and the medical staff are optimistic this won't be something that lingers for him."

The team is downplaying the idea that OF Lance Berkman will take over as the starting first baseman with Pujols out, but they have yet to make a roster move. 1B Mark Hamilton could be called up after just being optioned recently. IF Matt Carpenter and OF Adron Chambers are other options to be brought up.
