Rays | Alex Colome activated from DL

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 12:32:03 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays RP Alex Colome (biceps) was activated from the disabled list Tuesday, July 5. In a corresponding move, RP Danny Farquhar was optioned to the minors.

Fantasy Tip: With 19 saves, a 1.76 ERA and 11.2 K/9, Colome has established himself as a solid closer option in all fantasy leagues. It isn't out of the question to wait for him to prove his health in an outing before returning him to your starting lineups, though.

Rays | Logan Forsythe placed on disabled list

Sat, 14 May 2016 12:36:07 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 2B Logan Forsythe (shoulder) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a hairline fracture in his left shoulder blade. He is expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks. In a corresponding move, RP Danny Farquhar has been recalled from Class AAA Durham.

Fantasy Tip: Forsythe was injured after being hit in the upper part of his back by a pitch from Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez Monday, May 9. He was batting .308 with four home runs and 12 RBI through 29 games and should be stashed in all fantasy formats. Tim Beckham will continue to see most of the action at the keystone position in his absence but he should be viewed as little more than middle infield depth in AL-only leagues.

Rays | Brad Boxberger the sole closer

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 16:26:28 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays RP Brad Boxberger is now Tampa's sole closer after they traded RP Jake McGee to the Colorado Rockies Thursday, Jan. 28. RPs Xavier Cedeno and Enny Romero are the only left-handers in the bullpen now, alongside right-handed RPs Alex Colome, Steven Geltz, Danny Farquhar and Andrew Bellatti.

Fantasy Tip: Boxberger struggled in the second half last year, but now he has much more leeway and rope as Tampa's ninth-inning closer. The right-hander had a 3.71 ERA last year and a career-high 41 saves.

Mariners | SEA completes six-player deal with TB

Thu, 05 Nov 2015 18:11:29 -0800

The Seattle Mariners have acquired SP Nathan Karns, minor league P C.J. Riefenhauser and minor league OF Boog Powell from the Tampa Bay Rays, in exchange for 1B Logan Morrison, SS/OF Brad Miller and RP Danny Farquhar.

Fantasy Tip: Karns went 7-5 with a 3.67 ERA in 27 games (26 starts) in 2015 and will likely crack Seattle's rotation next year even if the team brings back Hisashi Iwakuma, making him a late-round draft option for AL-only and deep mixed leagues. Riefenhauser is a left-handed reliever who went 1-0 with a 5.52 ERA in 17 appearances. Powell hit .295 with a .385 OBP and 18 steals while splitting his time between Class AA Montgomery and Class AAA Durham.

Rays | TB completes six-player deal with SEA

Thu, 05 Nov 2015 17:59:45 -0800

The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired 1B/OF Logan Morrison, SS/OF Brad Miller and RP Danny Farquhar from the Seattle Mariners, in exchange for SP Nathan Karns, minor league P C.J. Riefenhauser and minor league OF Boog Powell.

Fantasy Tip: Morrison appears likely to serve as the Rays' designated hitter in 2016, with James Loney expected to remain the team's regular first baseman. Miller could compete for the starting shortstop position, with Asdrubal Cabrera eligible to become a free agent. Farquhar has closing experience at the major league level but will probably be used in a setup role in 2016. Morrison and Miller could be of interest to owners in AL-only leagues during the middle and later rounds of fantasy drafts next spring.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney designated

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 23:29:24 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney was designated for assignment Saturday, Aug. 22. In a corresponding move, RP Danny Farquhar was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

Fantasy Tip: These pitchers are mentioned because this likely cements RP Carson Smith as the closer in Seattle, much like manager Lloyd McClendon said two days ago. Rodney will likely be outrighted to Tacoma or cut outright. Smith's fantasy value isn't the best as he is struggling, but he will at least have job security.

Mariners | Seattle sticking with Fernando Rodney

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 14:07:42 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney has an 8.50 ERA in the last five weeks, but manager Lloyd McClendon said Wednesday, June 3, that he has no intention of removing Rodney from the closer's role. Rodney blew his second save in his last three chances against the New York Yankees Tuesday, June 2, and he's allowed 17 hits and six walks in his last 12 appearances. His three blown saves this year equal the total he blew from all of 2014. Rodney has 14 saves this year but an ERA of 6.85, and opponents are batting .308 off him.

"Rodney has struggled a little bit," McClendon said. "So has everybody else. But the fact is, he's our closer. We need him. We're going to need him to be successful. People talk very lightly about changing closers, and that's fine. But you have to have somebody to do it. You don't just throw anybody in the ninth inning and say, 'Well, let him do it.'" RP Carson Smith has an ERA of 1.17 in 24 outings as the setup man, but he's mainly faced right-handers. McClendon expressed his reluctance to go to Smith because of his inexperience and unwillingness to use him on back-to-back days. McClendon mentioned RP Danny Farquhar as a player with closing experience, but he's currently in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: If you own Rodney, hopefully you already handicapped him with Carson Smith. If not, you may be left in the dust without a closer soon. Bench Rodney until he can turn things around in the meantime. There's no reason why Smith should be available on any waiver wires.

Mariners | Austin Jackson off DL

Tue, 26 May 2015 04:41:00 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Austin Jackson (ankle) came off the 15-day disabled list following the Monday, May 25, game against the Tampa Bay Rays. RP Danny Farquhar was sent to Class AAA Tacoma in a corresponding roster move.

Fantasy Tip: Jackson ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) will be a source of points with his bat and some speed, so put him back in your lineup. If you still feel hesitant, then wait a game or so before putting him in.

Mariners | M's not overreacting on Fernando Rodney

Thu, 16 Apr 2015 10:09:17 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney has had a couple of bad outings of late, including a blown save and loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday, April 14, but manager Lloyd McClendon plans to ride out the storm with Rodney. Last year, Rodney blew just three saves in 51 attempts, but he also allowed at least one runner in 47 of 69 outings, including 34 of his 51 save chances. If McClendon chooses to go in another direction, RPs Danny Farquhar and Tom Wilhelmsen (on the disabled list) have closing experience, and RP Carson Smith has closer's stuff.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney owners should be a bit worried by his early-season struggles, especially at age 38. Rodney likely has somewhat of a long leash because of his 2014 season in Seattle, but saves poachers should be looking at Yoervis Medina and Farquhar in case Rodney continues to stumble. Smith is an intriguing bullpen arm, but he might be too far down the pecking order to matter.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney won't pitch Monday

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 16:14:16 -0700

Seattle Mariners RPs Fernando Rodney, Danny Farquhar and Yoervis Medina are not available to pitch Monday, April 13, unless it's an emergency, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. It's unknown who would close if the situation comes up.

Fantasy Tip: Carson Smith may be in live for a save chance tonight if the situation presents itself against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Don't be alarmed if Rodney doesn't pitch in the ninth tonight, as the team likely is looking to get him some rest. Rodney has pitched in each of the team's last two games over the weekend.
