The Minnesota Twins placed INF Tsuyoshi Nishioka (ankle) on the 7-day disabled list Tuesday, April 24, with Triple-A Rochester due to a sprained ankle.

The Minnesota Twins optioned IF Tsuyoshi Nishioka, OF Rene Tosoni and SP Carlos Gutierrez to Triple-A Rochester. They also reassigned RP Jason Bulger, RP Luis Perdomo, SP Daryl Thompson, RP Esmerling Vasquez, SP P.J. Walters, C Chris Herrmann, C Daniel Rohlfing, 1B Aaron Bates and OF Wilkin Ramirez to minor league camp.

Minnesota Twins OF Denard Span (neck) went 3-for-4 in his return to the spring lineup Wednesday, March 14. He is batting .471 in six Grapefruit League games. INF Tsuyoshi Nishioka (finger) also returned and went 1-for-4 with a single.

Minnesota Twins SS Tsuyoshi Nishioka (finger) was scheduled to play in a Grapefruit League game Monday, March 12, but he is now listed as day to day due to a strained left pinkie finger. General manager Terry Ryan said Nishioka was injured Saturday, March 10, while applying a tag.

Minnesota Twins SS Tsuyoshi Nishioka received a scare in the eighth inning of Grapefruit League play Friday, March 9, when he failed to get out of the way of a sliding baserunner while trying to turn a double play. Nishioka attempted to make the throw to first base, and it sailed wide. It was reminiscent of the play that broke Nishioka's leg early last season that forced him to miss 59 games. "He just needs to eat that ball because that's how he got his leg broken," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He's trying to hang in there too long. He needs to get out of the way. On a slow hit ball, he's not going to turn two."

Minnesota Twins INF Tsuyoshi Nishioka is working with former big leaguer Paul Molitor with the team hoping to prepare Nishioka for a utility infield role by opening day. "We're trying, all our people, to point out the things he's doing right," Molitor said. "Because I think he just needs to get back to that state of mind where he believes in himself as a player who can contribute over here. Fighting for a job, and having other people in front of him now, I think it's a strain mentally for him." Nishioka has still looked awkward on defense, and the team won't keep him on roster unless he can clear up those issues in camp. Most of his problems are at second base, where he was injured last year trying to turn a double play.
