The New York Yankees have failed to reach an agreement with Japanese League SS Hiroyuki Nakajima after winning the bidding rights to him 30 days ago. The $2 million the Yanks bid to negotiate with him will be returned. Nakajima will become a free agent next winter.

The New York Yankees are unlikely to work out a deal with Japanese League SS Hiroyuki Nakajima by the deadline Friday, Jan. 6. If that's the case, he will be an unrestricted free agent next year.

If the New York Yankees are able to agree to terms with Japanese League INF Hiroyuki Nakajima to join SS Eduardo Nunez for infielder depth, the team likely would not re-sign free-agent 3B Eric Chavez (Yankees).

The New York Yankees won exclusive negotiating rights to Japanese League INF Hiroyuki Nakajima, and the team has 30 days to reach an agreement with him on a contract, or he'll return to the Seibu Lions, and become an unrestricted international free agent after next season. However, a sign-and-trade deal might get him to the major leagues immediately. He wants to play every day, but he is open to the idea of playing for the Yankees in a backup role. The team wants to use him as a quality backup to 2B Robinson Cano, SS Derek Jeter and 3B Alex Rodriguez, and do not necessarily want to trade him.

The successful bid for the signing rights of Japanese SS Hiroyuki Nakajima by the New York Yankees is a likely sign manager Joe Girardi plans to give SS Derek Jeter more days off in 2012 from field duty. Jeter could be penciled in at DH once or twice a week.
