Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma's return looming

Mon, 29 Jun 2015 15:58:26 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) will throw six innings or 90 pitches in his third rehab start for Class AAA Tacoma Tuesday, June 30. That'll line him up to come off the disabled list and start against the Oakland Athletics Sunday, July 5, but there isn't an obvious opening in the starting rotation right now. SPs Mike Montgomery or Roenis Elias could be sent back to the minors, SP J.A. Happ could move to the bullpen or the team could go to a six-man rotation. Sunday would be Montgomery's turn, but he has a 2.04 ERA in five starts since June 2. Elias has been hit hard his last two starts, raising his ERA from 2.79 to 4.35. If Elias struggles against the A's Thursday, July 2, he could be the odd-man out. Happ is 0-4 with five no-decisions in his last nine starts despite not allowing more than four runs in those games. Seattle could also delay a decision on Iwakuma by keeping him on his rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) will join the rotation eventually, so you should check to see if he's available in deep mixed leagues. Iwakuma is a risky FantasyScore option Sunday if he returns to face the A's, and he could be on a pitch count in his first start back.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma close to returning

Fri, 26 Jun 2015 15:46:20 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) is expected to make one more rehab start for Class AAA Tacoma before he is re-evaluated.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma's ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) final rehab start will come Tuesday. He last started April 20, so fantasy owners have plenty of reasons to be skeptical that Iwakuma will return to form right away in his return to the rotation. Put him on your radar in deep mixed leagues but shy away from him at least in his first start back on FantasyScore, whenever that may be.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma set for rehab start

Wed, 24 Jun 2015 23:33:55 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) will have his second rehab start Thursday, June 25, at Class AAA Tacoma. He is expected to throw between 70 and 75 pitches. Iwakuma likely will have one more before the club considers his next step.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) will likely be brought along slowly because the Mariners pitching staff actually is doing quite well. Still, the Mariners want him back in as soon as possible, so keep an eye on his progress. Two more good rehab starts could result in an activation.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma strong in rehab start

Sun, 21 Jun 2015 05:18:32 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) allowed three hits and one run while pitching 3 2/3 innings Saturday, June 20, in a rehab start for Class A Everett.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) should be stashed everywhere in preparation for his arrival to the major leagues. It shouldn't take long for Iwakuma to normalize his poor numbers from his three starts earlier this season.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma on target for rehab

Wed, 17 Jun 2015 20:39:02 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) remains on target to make his minor-league rehab appearance Saturday, June 20, for Class A Everett. He is working his way back from a strained latissimus dorsi muscle.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma is likely a couple of weeks away from making a fantasy impact, so FantasyScore owners will want to wait to see him officially return from the 15-day disabled list and make a start or two without setback before trusting him again.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma set for rehab

Mon, 15 Jun 2015 18:00:16 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) threw a 40-pitch simulated game at Safeco Field Monday, June 15. He is scheduled to make a minor-league rehab start for Class A Everett Saturday, June 20.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma is slowly rounding the corner and nearing a return. FantasyScore players will want to see him pitch at least one full game at the big league level to knock off the rust before plugging him back into the lineup.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma set for sim game

Fri, 12 Jun 2015 15:51:44 -0700

Seattle Mariners Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) will throw a three-inning, 45-pitch simulated game at Class A Everett Monday, June 15.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) has been out since April 24, and he'll likely need at least a couple rehab starts once he is stretched out. So don't expect any fantasy returns from him in the near future. Plus, fantasy owners should also view Iwakuma as more of an end-of-the-rotation option than the No. 2 arm he was in 2013. Continue to check back for updates.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma set to throw again

Sun, 07 Jun 2015 04:30:01 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) will likely throw another bullpen session Sunday, June 7, barring any setbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) has been out since April 24, but he threw 27 pitches on Thursday, June 4, and he looks to be on the right track. Monitor his progress and give him one start when he returns to shake off the cobwebs.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma threw first bullpen

Thu, 04 Jun 2015 17:14:56 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (back) threw his first bullpen session Thursday, June 4, since suffering a strained back in late April. Iwakuma threw 27 fastballs.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) is likely still a ways away from returning, but he can be stashed in AL-only leagues and deeper mixed leagues. With the Mariners having recently bolstered their offense with the addition of Mark Trumbo, Iwakuma will have a higher win probability upon his return with more run support behind him.

Mariners | Updated Hisashi Iwakuma timeline

Mon, 01 Jun 2015 15:52:32 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (back) will throw a bullpen session Thursday, June 4, and is still two weeks away from a likely three-start rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) can continue to be stashed in the majority of seasonal formats. He wasn't effective early, though, and expecting his numbers from the past two seasons is likely unwise. Iwakuma should be viewed as more of an end-of-the-rotation fantasy option than the No. 2 he was in 2013. Continue to check back for updates on his progress. Fantasy owners will want to be patient with him upon his return and shouldn't count on any worthwhile production until after the All-Star break.
