Mariners | No timetable for Hisashi Iwakuma

Thu, 21 May 2015 16:43:39 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (back) doesn't have a date to resume throwing, and he's been on the disabled list since April 25.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma may struggle to make it back to the rotation before the All-Star break at this rate. Continue stashing him in traditional formats, though. Roenis Elias ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) has taken advantage of his rotation spot to post a 2.76 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in five starts (32 2/3 frames). Elias is only fanning 6.9 hitters per nine innings, but he could continue serving as a decent sleeper pick at FantasyScore in the right matchups.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma still not throwing

Tue, 12 May 2015 15:26:29 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) has been recovering, but he won't throw for the next 10 to 14 days.

Fantasy Tip: At this rate, we might not see Iwakuma back until early July. Continue to stash him in a DL slot in deep mixed and AL-only leagues for now. Roenis Elias ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) has benefitted from Iwakuma's injury with a spot in the rotation. The lefty has a 3.86 ERA and 1.34 WHIP while striking out 19 in 18 2/3 innings over three starts in 2015. Elias, for as long as he's in the rotation, makes for a fine sleeper play based on matchups at FantasyScore.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma back at end of May?

Sat, 09 May 2015 23:59:37 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) is not expected back with the parent club until at least the end of May.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,900, 11.8% of cap), as previously suggested, should be stashed away in all formats because he has been very effective in the past and can be again. The team does not want to rush him along, although his rehab from injury so far has looked good.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma throws from flat ground

Fri, 08 May 2015 15:14:29 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (back) threw from flat ground and looked pain-free Friday, May 8.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) should be stashed in all seasonal formats. He wasn't effective early, though, and expecting his numbers from the past two seasons is likely unwise. Iwakuma should be viewed as more of an end-of-the-rotation fantasy option than the No. 2 he was in 2013. Continue to check back for updates on his progress and recovery timeline.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma playing catch

Wed, 06 May 2015 18:37:17 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) played catch at 75 feet Wednesday, May 6, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. The team is not setting a timetable, but McClendon said "he's a ways away" from a return, and he will need minor-league rehab appearances.

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore need not bother with Iwakuma for a while, and those in standard leagues should expect a lengthy absence, too.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma light tosses

Fri, 01 May 2015 14:08:34 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) threw lightly Friday, May 1. Manager Lloyd McClendon said Iwakuma is still three to four weeks from returning.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) is worth stashing in all formats, however, he started poorly, and expecting him to return his previous numbers may be unwise. He appears more of a end-of-the-rotation fantasy option than the No. 2 he was in 2013. Continue to check back for updates on his progress and recovery timeline.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma out 2-4 weeks

Sat, 25 Apr 2015 17:43:11 -0700

Updating a previous story, Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) was diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain of his right lat Saturday, April 25, and he is expected to miss 2-4 weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) has lasted only 16.1 innings pitched across three starts this season. Iwakuma has one loss on the season and an inflated 6.61 ERA. A 27.8% home run to fly ball ratio can take a large portion of the blame for Iwakuma's poor start, and owners should keep him stashed.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma to the DL

Fri, 24 Apr 2015 18:41:00 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right lat strain Friday, April 24, and recalled RP Lucas Luetge from Triple-A Tacoma.

Fantasy Tip: With Iwakuma on the shelf, Roenis Elias would seem like the most logical choice to take his spot in the rotation. Elias finished with a 3.85 ERA last year, and if he is recalled, he could be worth a look at FantasyScore depending on the matchup.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma off to rough start

Mon, 20 Apr 2015 23:36:20 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma is 0-1 with a 6.61 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP after his first three starts of the season.

Fantasy Tip: He has allowed four earned runs in each start and served up five homers in 16 1/3 innings. He's slated for a good matchup against the Minnesota Twins in his next start, but at $6,300 (12.6% of your cap), we aren't too comfortable using him on FantasyScore yet.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma dealing with blister

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 16:38:01 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) is dealing with a little blister on his finger that kept him from throwing as many splitters Saturday, March 28.

Fantasy Tip: The team downplayed it, but it's something to monitor as the regular season nears. Iwakuma is well worth his $7,000 (14.0% of your cap) price tag on FantasyScore if it dissipates.
