Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma keeps rolling

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 14:54:09 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma won his fifth straight start Saturday, July 23, against the Toronto Blue Jays, yielding two runs on four runs and three walks over six innings.

Fantasy Tip: Since falling to 6-6 with a 4.45 ERA after a road loss to the Detroit Tigers on June 22, Iwakuma is 5-0 with a 2.51 ERA since. He's lasted at least six innings in each turn and hasn't even logged 100 pitches in any outing over that stretch. Despite his recent success, Iwakuma will be hard-pressed to continue his win streak on the road against the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma shuts down Astros

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 17:11:43 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma allowed two hits over seven shutout innings, walking one and striking out eight in a win over the Houston Astros Saturday, July 16.

Fantasy Tip: After a lackluster first half of the year, Iwakuma's first start after the All-Star break was a flashback to his brilliant 2013 campaign. He should already be owned in AL-only leagues, and he could be worth a look in deeper mixed formats.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma pitches well Friday

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 05:55:25 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma allowed one run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings against the Kansas City Royals Friday, July 8, to pick up his ninth win of the season. He struck out six batters and walked three in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma has been a bit inconsistent in his outings this season but has allowed only seven runs in his last three starts. Iwakuma is a decent fantasy option for owners when he has a favorable matchup but may not be a must-start option.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma wins another

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 23:38:40 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma allowed two earned runs, six hits and a walk with four strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a win Tuesday, June 28, against the Pittsburgh Pirates to improve to 7-6.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma started the season 1-4, but he has won six of his past eight decisions dating back to May 8. Lately he has had some trouble keeping the ball in the park, allowing 10 homers over the past six starts in 37 1/3 innings. However, he remains a must-start fantasy option in all formats.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma hit hard in loss

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 20:21:41 -0700

Settle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma allowed five earned runs, 11 hits and three walks with five strikeouts in just 4 2/3 innings in a loss Wednesday, June 22, against the Detroit Tigers to drop to 6-6. His ERA also ballooned from 4.18 to 4.45.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma had been receiving pretty solid run support recently, which masked his problems a bit. He has allowed at least three earned runs in eight of his past nine outings, but he has also picked up seven or more runs of support in six of the past eight starts. He remains a decent play in most fantasy formats for his strikeout potential, but he has really tailed off in the ERA department.

Mariners | Wade Miley, James Paxton to be separated?

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 20:45:09 -0700

Seattle Mariners SPs Wade Miley and James Paxton are likely going to be separated after their scheduled starts Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12. Manager Scott Servais has an open date Monday, June 13, and it's likely Paxton and SP Hisashi Iwakuma are swapped, keeping Paxton on regular rest to pitch Thursday, June 16, against the Tampa Bay Rays, with Iwakuma seeing two extra days rest before starting Friday, June 17, against the Boston Red Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma might be the big winner, although his fantasy owners might disagree. An extra two days of rest might be just what the doctor ordered to get him back on track.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma has solid outing

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 05:19:21 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma allowed two runs on six hits in eight innings against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, April 22. He struck out three batters and walked one during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma had his longest outing of the season Friday and has allowed four runs or fewer in all four of his starts this season. He is scheduled to face the Houston Astros in his next start, which makes him a risky option in most fantasy leagues.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez could pitch Saturday

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 17:12:56 -0700

Updating a previous report, it is unknown if Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (illness) will be able to pitch against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Saturday, April 23, or if his next start will be pushed back even further. He was slated to face the Angels Friday, April 22, but was scratched because of the flu, with SP Hisashi Iwakuma moving up one day in the rotation to make the start.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez is 1-1 with a 1.00 ERA over three starts this year, with 20 strikeouts in 18 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander is worth starting in all fantasy formats Saturday if he is deemed healthy enough to pitch.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma starting vs. Angels

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 13:42:24 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma is starting against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, April 22, after SP Felix Hernandez (illness) was scratched with an illness.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma has an 8-3 record with a 2.71 ERA against the Angels during his career, and Los Angeles has the second-fewest runs (47) in the league this season, so it isn't a bad spot for the righty. In daily contests, Iwakuma could be a sneaky start because some competitors might not catch he is even starting. Just note, he hasn't been great to start the year with nine earned runs allowed through 18 innings.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez scratched vs. Angels

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 13:32:45 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (illness) was scratched from his start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim because of an illness Friday, April 22. SP Hisashi Iwakuma is starting against the Angels in place of Hernandez Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Hernandez to return to the mound against Los Angeles Saturday, April 23, or Sunday, April 24, and given his strong start (1.00 ERA and 10.0 K/9 through three outings), you can start him confidently in all fantasy formats. Iwakuma hasn't been as sharp early, but he is 8-3 in his career against the Angels with a 2.71 ERA and could be a sneaky start in daily contests if competitors miss the news he's starting.
