Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma has solid outing

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 05:19:21 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma allowed two runs on six hits in eight innings against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, April 22. He struck out three batters and walked one during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma had his longest outing of the season Friday and has allowed four runs or fewer in all four of his starts this season. He is scheduled to face the Houston Astros in his next start, which makes him a risky option in most fantasy leagues.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez could pitch Saturday

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 17:12:56 -0700

Updating a previous report, it is unknown if Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (illness) will be able to pitch against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Saturday, April 23, or if his next start will be pushed back even further. He was slated to face the Angels Friday, April 22, but was scratched because of the flu, with SP Hisashi Iwakuma moving up one day in the rotation to make the start.

Fantasy Tip: Hernandez is 1-1 with a 1.00 ERA over three starts this year, with 20 strikeouts in 18 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander is worth starting in all fantasy formats Saturday if he is deemed healthy enough to pitch.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma starting vs. Angels

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 13:42:24 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma is starting against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, April 22, after SP Felix Hernandez (illness) was scratched with an illness.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma has an 8-3 record with a 2.71 ERA against the Angels during his career, and Los Angeles has the second-fewest runs (47) in the league this season, so it isn't a bad spot for the righty. In daily contests, Iwakuma could be a sneaky start because some competitors might not catch he is even starting. Just note, he hasn't been great to start the year with nine earned runs allowed through 18 innings.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez scratched vs. Angels

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 13:32:45 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (illness) was scratched from his start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim because of an illness Friday, April 22. SP Hisashi Iwakuma is starting against the Angels in place of Hernandez Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Hernandez to return to the mound against Los Angeles Saturday, April 23, or Sunday, April 24, and given his strong start (1.00 ERA and 10.0 K/9 through three outings), you can start him confidently in all fantasy formats. Iwakuma hasn't been as sharp early, but he is 8-3 in his career against the Angels with a 2.71 ERA and could be a sneaky start in daily contests if competitors miss the news he's starting.

Yankees | Alex Rodriguez ends slump

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 13:28:14 -0700

New York Yankees DH Alex Rodriguez ended a 0-for-19 slump with a two-run shot against Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma on Sunday, April 17.

Fantasy Tip: The two-RBI effort was the first of the season for Rodriguez, who lifted his average to .118. The 40-year-old struck out two more times on Sunday and has whiffed at least twice in four of his last six games, so it doesn't appear he is on the verge of a breakthrough. Keep him on benches in fantasy for now.

Mariners | So-so results for Hisashi Iwakuma

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 22:11:47 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma allowed two earned runs, six hits and three walks with five strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision Tuesday, April 5, against the Texas Rangers. He threw 59 of his 90 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma had a so-so stat line for fantasy owners in this one. He is a Top 50 fantasy option at his position and will certainly have much better days than this. He'll try to rebound against the Rangers next time out Monday, April 11.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma ready for the season

Thu, 31 Mar 2016 14:05:24 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) pitched two innings in a minor league game Thursday, March 31, and declared himself ready for the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma was dealing with some blisters, but they aren't expected to linger and impact his first start. The veteran enters his age-35 season after making just 48 starts over the past two seasons, and he shouldn't be viewed as anything more than a mid-rotation arm for your virtual squad.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma bounced around

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 23:37:06 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma was smashed for five earned runs and seven hits in just 2 2/3 innings in the Cactus League spring start against the San Francisco Giants Wednesday, March 16.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma wasn't particularly sharp, but don't sound the alarm just yet as it was just one poor outing. He remains a solid middle of the rotation fantasy option in all formats and he'll give you double-digit wins and a solid amount of strikeouts.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma looking good

Fri, 11 Mar 2016 15:47:22 -0800

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma tossed three shutout innings in spring action Friday, March 11, and he has allowed just one hit and has walked one in five spring innings over two outings so far. "My fastball was pretty sharp," Iwakuma said. "I was able to command, like I did last time, and I felt I was able to throw a little harder today. So overall it felt good. I'm pleased with where I'm at right now."

Fantasy Tip: So far there isn't anything to worry about concerning Iwakuma's shoulder. When he's healthy, he's a ground-ball machine with elite control. Combine that with pitcher-friendly Safeco Field and you have a great low-risk fantasy sleeper for the middle of your fake rotation.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma says he's healthy

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 13:42:08 -0800

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma said he is healthy despite failing his physical examination with the Los Angeles Dodgers. "I'm very healthy," Iwakuma declared. "They (the Dodgers) had their own medical issues. I went to a physical, and they said they wanted to renegotiate. That's all I know."

Fantasy Tip: Somewhat comically, health has been the biggest fantasy drawback to Iwakuma since his monster 2013 campaign, as he has made just 48 starts over the past two seasons, including only 20 last year. He is a nice mid-rotation arm for your virtual team, but entering his age-35 season, any significant bounce-back expectations should be kept in check.
