Rays | Drew Smyly to throw Saturday

Fri, 26 Jun 2015 13:21:57 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) will throw off a mound for the first time Saturday, June 27.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly is fighting an uphill battle to pitch again this year. Only continue stashing him on the DL if you have the room in deep mixed and AL-only leagues.

Rays | Drew Smyly tosses from 105 feet

Mon, 22 Jun 2015 14:01:38 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) threw long toss from 105 feet Monday, June 22.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly still has a long road ahead of him before returning to the mound, and outside of cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, there is no reason to stash him. Plus, there is no guarantee of what his fantasy return will be for those patient owners, either. After all, he is rehabbing a torn labrum. Continue to monitor his progress and check back for updates.

Rays | Drew Smyly throws from 75 feet

Mon, 15 Jun 2015 14:47:19 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) played catch for 30 throws from 75 feet Monday, June 15. He is scheduled to throw Wednesday, June 17, and Thursday, June 18, too.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly is a long way from returning to the mound, and outside of cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, there is no reason to stash him. Continue to monitor his progress and check back for updates.

Rays | Drew Smyly progressing

Sat, 13 Jun 2015 16:46:36 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) made 20 throws from 45-60 feet Saturday, June 13, and said he "felt great" afterwards. Smyly will do the same drill Monday, June 15.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly is a long way from returning, but could do so at some point in July. AL-only owners can stash Smyly now.

Rays | Drew Smyly doing drills

Thu, 11 Jun 2015 15:09:13 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) did a sock drill Thursday, June 11, for the first time since landing on the disabled list. The drill allows him to simulate throwing without putting unneeded stress on his shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly is holding out hope of returning to pitch later this season, but he appears to be fighting an uphill battle. Don't expect him to be much of a fantasy force even if he does return. About the only place you should still be stashing him is in AL-only universes.

Rays | Drew Smyly to be re-evaluated in eight weeks

Thu, 21 May 2015 14:26:49 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) said he'll be re-evaluated in roughly eight weeks and there should be a clearer picture of whether he can return in 2015. He currently is not considering season-ending surgery. Smyly was put on the 60-day disabled list May 9, and he hopes to resume playing catch in the next couple of weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly shouldn't be held onto in shallow mixed leagues at this point unless you're using him in one of your DL slots. Even then, there's a good chance he won't pitch again this season. With Matt Moore's (elbow) return on the horizon, Alex Colome ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) may not be long for the rotation. Stash Moore now if you're looking for extra pitching help this summer.

Rays | Drew Smyly could return this year

Tue, 19 May 2015 14:59:36 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) could return this season after tearing the labrum in his left shoulder. Manager Kevin Cash said the team is "optimistic" that Smyly could pitch this year. Smyly will meet with the training staff Thursday, May 21, to formulate a plan that will include rest and rehab over surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly is probably still a long shot to pitch again in 2015, and surgery might be inevitable. About the only place you should hang onto him are AL-only setups. Alex Colome's ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) rotation spot may be safe until Matt Moore (elbow) returns sometime next month.

Rays | Drew Smyly seeking second opinion

Wed, 13 May 2015 14:50:57 -0700

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) is headed to Texas to have the torn labrum in his left shoulder examined by Dr. Keith Meister of the Texas Rangers. There still has not been a final decision on whether Smyly will opt for surgery.

Fantasy Tip: At this point, Smyly is nothing more than a desperation DL stash in seasonal formats. There is no guarantee he returns to make an impact in 2015, if he does opt out of season-ending surgery, either. Smyly is not worth a bench spot in year-long leagues.

Rays | Drew Smyly moved to 60-day DL

Wed, 13 May 2015 14:11:02 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) was moved to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, May 13.

Fantasy Tip: Seasonal owners have no reason to stash Smyly on their bench, as he is unlikely to pitch again in 2015. Nathan Karns ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) and Alex Colome ($4,000, 8% of cap) have been filling as starters for Tampa, but one will likely be bumped once Matt Moore rejoins the rotation. Karns and Colome's year-long value is fleeting in AL-only and cavernous mixed formats, and they're risky FantasyScore starts.

Rays | Drew Smyly decision coming in a few days

Mon, 11 May 2015 13:34:11 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) won't have a decision on whether he'll need surgery for a few more days after he underwent his second MRI exam Monday, May 11. He is seeking a second opinion on a torn labrum in his shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: With Smyly facing the potential of season-ending surgery, Nathan Karns ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) and Alex Colome ($4,000, 8% of cap) may be gaining long-term fantasy value. Alex Cobb is also having season-ending Tommy John surgery. However, the return of Matt Moore (elbow) looms early this summer.
