Rays | Drew Smyly disappoints vs. Marlins

Thu, 26 May 2016 16:47:56 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly dropped to 2-6 after losing his start Thursday, May 26, versus the Miami Marlins. The left-hander went six innings, surrendering five runs on six hits and one walk, including two homers. He also struck out four.

Fantasy Tip: Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, Justin Bour and even Ichiro Suzuki were all out of the lineup, yet Smyly couldn't take advantage of what should have been a very favorable matchup opposite mostly backup position players. Smyly has been mostly steady thus far, and he's been a help for strikeouts and WHIP, but it seems like he's cooling off after a very solid first month and change to the year.

Rays | Drew Smyly struggles in loss

Sat, 21 May 2016 22:50:51 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly saw his record drop to 2-5 overall Saturday, May 21, in a 5-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly has been disappointing this season and should be avoided in all formats until he figures out what is wrong, if that ever happens. Smyly's earned run average is 3.54 and he has an ability to throw strikes, but there seems to be something missing.

Rays | Drew Smyly whiffs six in no-decision

Wed, 04 May 2016 20:54:28 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly allowed two earned runs, five hits and two walks with six strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision Wednesday, May 4, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly had his shortest outing of the season in this one, but he has rolled up six or more strikeouts in five consecutive outings while posting a 0.78 WHIP overall. He is a must-have in AL-only fantasy leagues, most mixed formats for his strikeout potential and a decent mid-tier DFS option.

Rays | Drew Smyly sharp in win over Yankees

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 13:40:27 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly had little trouble dissecting the New York Yankees on Sunday, April 24, yielding one run and striking out six across seven innings for his first victory of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly has pitched like an ace since getting pounded for five runs in his season debut, and has allowed a total of three earned runs while fanning 28 in 22 innings since. He'll get his second look against the Toronto Blue Jays - the team that roughed him up in his first outing - in his next scheduled start at home on Friday. While he isn't a great option for that game, his strikeout potential makes him worth a start in fantasy.

Rays | Drew Smyly sparkles in no-decision

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 23:52:23 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly allowed just one hit and two walks over eight scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts in a no-decision Tuesday, April 19, against the Boston Red Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly has struck out 22 batters over his past two starts, but he continues to search for his first win of the season. The Rays offense has just taken the night off when he has been on the hill, frustrating Smyly and his growing throng of fantasy owners.

Rays | Drew Smyly whiffs 11 in loss

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 19:10:15 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (0-2) struck out 11 batters in a loss to the Cleveland Indians Wednesday, April 13. He allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk over seven innings.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly's 11 strikeouts tied a career high and gave him 16 over 13 2/3 frames this year, making him a viable pitching option in all fantasy formats. His next outing will come versus the Boston Red Sox Tuesday, April 19.

Orioles | Pair of Orioles expected to sit Saturday

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 15:11:03 -0700

Baltimore Orioles OF Adam Jones (rib cage) and SS J.J. Hardy (calf) are not in the lineup against Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly on Saturday, April 9. 3B Manny Machado will occupy Hardy's spot in the field for the second straight day and bat third while OF Joey Rickard will fill for Jones in center and hit leadoff.

Fantasy Tip: With temperatures expected to dip possibly as low as the high 20s on Saturday, it doesn't make a lot of sense for Baltimore to push its veterans in this spot. Jones is set to miss his third straight game but, like Hardy, is expected to return to the lineup Sunday for the series finale. Jones is a must-start when healthy, even though Rickard has done a fine job in center during his absence; Hardy can be left on waivers in most leagues.

Orioles | Pedro Alvarez resting on Saturday

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 13:56:50 -0700

Baltimore Orioles DH Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup against Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly on Saturday, April 9. C Matt Wieters will move over to designated hitter and bat sixth while C Caleb Joseph will serve as SP Mike Wright's battery-mate behind the plate.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez signed with the Orioles in mid-March and predictably struggled during the spring, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise the ex-Pittsburgh Pirate is 0-for-12 to begin his Baltimore career. Owners should know the drill with Alvarez by now; occasional outbursts of power accompanied by a low batting average. As long as your team can take the hit in average, he can be a boon to the HR and RBI categories.

Rays | Drew Smyly mediocre in loss

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 20:07:09 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly allowed five earned runs and six hits with a walk over 6 2/3 innings in a loss Monday, April 4, against the Toronto Blue Jays. He struck out five batters in the 99-pitch performance.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly was dinged for homers in the third, fourth and fifth inning, but he fought through it and worked into the seventh inning. It was disappointing since he was 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA in five spring starts, but there will be better days. Fantasy owners should not be discouraged, although the homers were a bit alarming.

Rays | Drew Smyly bounces back Wednesday

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 16:58:26 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly recorded four no-hit, scoreless innings Wednesday, March 30, against the Boston Red Sox. He walked only one and struck out seven.

Fantasy Tip: It was a combination of starters and bench players in there for the Red Sox, so the outing was a legitimately impressive one for Tampa Bay's injury-prone left-hander. Smyly had struggled in his past couple of outings, but this performance should get him back on track entering the new season. He's got nice potential to be a very useful fantasy asset.
