He loaded the bases in the first inning but got out of the jam on a pop up and two strikeouts. Smyly allowed four hits while walking three and striking out four.

Detroit Tigers SS Danny Worth and OFs Andy Dirks and Clete Thomas have made the opening day roster. SP Drew Smyly will start the season at Triple-A Toledo and then be called up to make his first start of the season and major league debut April 12.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced that SP Drew Smyly has been selected to be the team's No. 5 starter and that RP Luis Marte has earned the final spot in the bullpen. Smyly will make his first major league start against the Tampa Bay Rays April 12, following a tuneup outing with Triple-A Toledo.

The Detroit Tigers' No. 5 rotation spot is now down to just SPs Drew Smyly and Duane Below after SP Andrew Oliver was optioned to Triple-A Toledo Thursday, March 29. Oliver went 1-2 with a 5.17 ERA in 15 2/3 Grapefruit League frames. He walked 10 and struck out 10.
