Rays | Drew Smyly to remain in rotation

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 16:15:25 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly will remain in the starting rotation, and manager Kevin Cash and the staff is optimistic about Smyly's next start.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly has had a trying season with a 5.64 ERA, and he's allowed at least four earned runs in each of his last five starts dating back to June 20. The strikeout upside is there (9.5 K/9 and 10.4 in 2015), but he's hurting his owners much more frequently than helping, and you should look to avoid him until he shows better results.

Rays | Drew Smyly's bad luck continues

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 00:56:10 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly gave up nine hits and five runs in five innings Monday, July 18, in a 7-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies. The loss left Smyly 0-7 over his past 10 starts and extended his career-high losing streak. The 11 defeats are also a career high for Smyly, who lost 10 games in 2014 when he pitched for both the Detroit Tigers and the Rays.

Fantasy Tip: What has gone wrong with Smyly? He was so promising at one point, and all that promise appears to have gone out the window. Needless to say, you need to avoid him for the time being.

Rangers | Texas interested in most Tampa starters

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 13:13:28 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SPs Jake Odorizzi and Drew Smyly are possible trade targets for the Texas Rangers, but the Rangers are not pursuing SP Chris Archer.

Fantasy Tip: The Rangers are looking to add to their starting rotation and could add either Odorizzi or Smyly. They likely would see a boost in their value since they would be playing for a better team and would be decent options in mixed leagues.

Rays | Drew Smyly pounded by the Halos

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 20:49:12 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly was blasted for seven runs - four earned - and eight hits over four innings Wednesday, July 6, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He is winless in nine starts since last winning May 16.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly joins teammate Chris Archer in the double-digit loss club before the All-Star break. While his 1.32 WHIP isn't too terrible, his 5.47 ERA is deplorable. At least Smyly manages to salvage most fantasy stat lines with 108 strikeouts through 100 1/3 innings.

Rays | Drew Smyly tagged with loss Friday

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 19:56:54 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (2-9) allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits over 6 2/3 innings in a loss to the Detroit Tigers Friday, July 1, with four walks and eight strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly has allowed 12 earned runs in his last 11 2/3 innings and hasn't recorded a victory since May 16. He should be avoided in all fantasy formats at this point.

Rays | Drew Smyly has handled Baltimore

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 21:33:33 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly is scheduled to start the series finale Sunday, June 26, against the Baltimore Orioles. He is 0-3 over his past six starts, but he has a career record of 4-0 with a 1.82 ERA against the Orioles.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly is worth using in daily AL-only fantasy formats and as a solid mid-tier sleeper in DFS play.

Rays | Drew Smyly solid in no-decision

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 20:54:23 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly allowed four earned runs, eight hits and no walks with five strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision Monday, June 20, against the Cleveland Indians.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly hasn't won in six starts, but he has racked up 24 strikeouts over 18 2/3 innings in three outings in the month of June. He is still a solid fantasy option in AL-only leagues despite his poor 2-7 record.

Rays | Drew Smyly strikes out a dozen

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 21:34:49 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly allowed two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, June 15. He walked none and struck out a season-high 12.

Fantasy Tip: This was probably Smyly's best outing since April, when he posted a 2.60 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 41 K's in 34 2/3 innings. The southpaw was wretched in May, so hopefully this gets him going again. His WHIP and strikeout numbers are very strong, but a sub-par ERA and two wins in 13 starts make him more appealing in deeper mixed formats.

Rays | Drew Smyly pushed back

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 11:05:23 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly will have his next start pushed back in order to give him a mental and physical break.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly was a popular breakout candidate for 2016 and had a fine April, but that was also aided by a fortunate BABIP. Since then, his control and strikeouts have faded while he's battled mechanical issues, and his ERA is up to 4.94 after several rough outings in his last three starts. The break might be just what he needs to get back on track.
