Tigers | Drew Smyly credited with save

Fri, 05 Apr 2013 14:28:04 -0700

Detroit Tigers SP Drew Smyly worked four perfect innings in relief while striking out five to earn his first career save against the New York Yankees Friday, April 5.

Fantasy Tip: Don't read anything into this as far as Smyly entering the picture of Detroit's closer-by-committee situation. Phil Coke remains the best option to own for saves, with Joaquin Benoit the next in line. The signing of Jose Valverde makes him intriguing in the long run, but there's no guarantee he'll be closing games in Detroit just yet. He should be scooped up, though.

Tigers | Rick Porcello focusing on slider

Thu, 31 Jan 2013 13:01:13 -0800

Detroit Tigers SP Rick Porcello, who will compete for the No. 5 rotation spot with SP Drew Smyly in spring training if he isn't traded before then, said he's been focusing on his slider this offseason and shoring up his mechanics with the help of mentor Jeff Jones. "Right now, I've been focusing on my slider, because that's the pitch that I'm going to throw more than my curveball generally," Porcello said. "A lot of it has to do with just your consistency in your delivery and your arm angle. If all of those fall into place, then your pitches should be where they need to be. That's the main thing I've been focusing on is just repeating my delivery and getting all my body parts where they need to be." Hitters were more aggressive against Porcello last season, but he allowed a .310 average against and he allowed the most doubles in baseball with 53. His struggles with command led to left-handed hitters feasting off of him.

Tigers | Rick Porcello the favorite for No. 5 rotation spot

Wed, 16 Jan 2013 12:38:58 -0800

Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said SP Rick Porcello has a "leg up" on the No. 5 starting rotation post this season. SP Drew Smyly will be Porcello's main competition this spring. "Smyly did such a good job for us last year and, ideally, you want a left-hander in your rotation," Dombrowski said. "So I don't know which way that will end up going, but Porcello would have to be a leader."
