Rays | Drew Smyly not expected to pitch this spring

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 11:24:41 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) is expected to throw his third bullpen of the spring Thursday, March 26, but manager Kevin Cash doesn't think Smyly will be able to appear in a game in spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly recorded a 1.70 ERA and 0.76 WHIP while compiling 44 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings over seven starts after being traded to the Rays in 2014. Smyly will need to be monitored, but his shoulder injury shouldn't keep him out for long. He's worth stashing late in mixed league drafts for his upside.

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 13:47:51 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Monday, March 23, and said he felt good.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly remains an upside arm to target in the late middle rounds of drafts, but it would be wise to continue monitoring his recovery progress leading into the season. He isn't expected to miss a significant amount of time and projects to return in mid-April, barring any setbacks.

Rays | Drew Smyly may miss one start

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 07:20:07 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) likely will not be ready to make his first start of the regular season but may not miss more time, according manager Kevin Cash. Smyly played catch from 60 feet and 70 feet Sunday, March 15.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor the situation to see if Smyly is able to make progress from his injury. Smyly's value likely will not be affected too much by one missed start and could be an option in the middle rounds of drafts if he only misses a few starts.

Rays | Drew Smyly dealing with injury

Sun, 08 Mar 2015 07:45:04 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) is behind schedule because of shoulder tendinitis and not because of his offseason finger injury. Manager Kevin Cash said he is not sure if Smyly will be ready for the start of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor the situation to see if he has a chance to be ready for the season. Smyly pitched well during the final portion of the 2014 season and could be an option in the middle rounds of drafts if he is healthy for opening day.

Rays | Alex Cobb to start opening day

Wed, 04 Mar 2015 10:56:51 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Cobb will start the team's opening day game in 2015, according to manager Kevin Cash. Cobb went 10-9 with a 2.87 ERA in 27 starts in 2014 and is the team's ace after SP David Price was traded to the Detroit Tigers. SPs Chris Archer and Drew Smyly will follow Cobb in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Cobb has really come into his own as the Rays' ace starter. He's a notch below the elite fantasy ace names out there, but he could put up just as good numbers in a full season, making him a bargain in the middle rounds of standard 12-team leagues.

Rays | Drew Smyly has schedule mapped out

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 13:54:35 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly expects to make his first Grapefruit League appearance Tuesday, March 10, or Wednesday, March 11. Smyly did not throw in the bullpen with the rest of his group Wednesday, Feb. 25, but he is "not at all" behind schedule, according to manager Kevin Cash. Cash noted Smyly and pitching coach Jim Hickey have mapped out a personal schedule for Smyly.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Smyly to receive plenty of breakout ink leading into drafts. As a starter, he has a career 3.55 ERA, 7.55 strikeouts per nine, and 2.50 walks per nine, so the hype is warranted. Don't let Smyly slip too far into the middle rounds on draft day.
