Orioles | Gerardo Parra not starting Tuesday

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 12:46:01 -0700

Baltimore Orioles OF Gerardo Parra is not starting Tuesday, Sept. 1, against the Tampa Bay Rays. OF Dariel Alvarez is in right field and batting eighth against Rays SP Drew Smyly.

Fantasy Tip: Parra ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has cooled off in the past week with a .185 average, and even though he does bat left-handed he is only .247-3-10 against lefty pitching. Alvarez is 3-for-9 with a double since his callup earlier in the week.

Rays | Short outing for Drew Smyly

Thu, 27 Aug 2015 20:20:01 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly allowed three earned runs on eight hits and struck out five over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Minnesota Twins Thursday, Aug. 27.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) has struggled with efficiency lately, and he hasn't made it out of the fifth inning in three starts since returning from injury. He isn't worth using at FantasyScore right now.

Rays | Drew Smyly spins solid outing vs. Oakland

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 06:12:05 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts during the Rays' 2-1 win over the Oakland Athletics Friday, Aug. 21.

Fantasy Tip: The preseason breakout candidate could still help down the stretch for those who patiently stashed him. Smyly ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) struggled in his first start after returning from a lengthy injury absence due to a partially torn labrum, so bouncing back Friday is a step in the right direction. Smyly is still far from a must-start arm at this point, though. It would be wise to be picky with his matchups and only utilize him against favorable opponents.

Athletics | Coco Crisp is back in the lineup

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 15:47:03 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp (hip, ankle) is playing left field and batting eighth against Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly Friday, Aug. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Crisp ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) has been awful this season, and between the poor play and injuries, he isn't worth the headache in the majority of leagues. After all, he has a single RBI and stolen base and a dreadful .157 batting average this season. At his cap hit, FantasyScore players can do better, too.

Rays | Drew Smyly returns from disabled list

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 09:23:57 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) made his first start Sunday, Aug. 16, against the Texas Rangers since being placed on the disabled list in May with a partially torn labrum to his left shoulder. Smyly pitched four innings, struck out four, walked two, allowed seven hits and five earned runs. He will get the Oakland Athletics next time out.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) showed signs of being a top of the rotation starter in 2013 with Detroit before being traded to the Rays. He showed some rust, which is to be expected, but he could be a good matchup and streaming option on FantasyScore and in yearly leagues. Monitor his first few starts before considering him in daily leagues.

Rays | Drew Smyly starting vs. Rangers Sunday

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 15:07:31 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) is starting against the Texas Rangers Sunday, Aug. 16, according to manager Kevin Cash

Fantasy Tip: It is somewhat surprising to see Smyly returning so soon, and to a degree, at all this season. Since joining the Rays, he has a 1.96 ERA, a 0.76 WHIP and a 9.1 K/9 over 10 starts, so there is plenty of upside. However, there is also plenty of injury risk. While FantasyScore players will want to take a wait-and-see approach, Smyly warrants ownership in the majority of seasonal leagues.

Rays | Drew Smyly could return Sunday

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 14:53:49 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) had a successful rehab outing in which he threw 94 pitches over four innings, and he'll throw a final bullpen session before being reinstated from the disabled list. He could start as soon as Sunday, Aug. 16.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly probably won't offer fantasy owners a ton of upside for the remainder of the season, especially since he's coming off a torn labrum. However, he was pitching well before his injury and should be added if he's available, at least in deep mixed leagues. Starting him this weekend if he returns on the road against the Texas Rangers on FantasyScore is a huge risk.

Rays | Drew Smyly confident in return

Wed, 12 Aug 2015 14:42:31 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) is confident that he will return to pitch this year. "I feel ready to roll," he said.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly was pitching well with a 2.70 ERA and 0.78 WHIP and an 11.3 K/9, but it was only in three starts earlier this year. How much do you trust a pitcher coming off a torn labrum for the rest of the season? Smyly is unlikely to pitch as well as he did in three starts earlier this year, and he's unlikely to return much fantasy value over the rest of the season.

Rays | Drew Smyly to make one more rehab start

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 10:27:40 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) will make at least one more rehab start after he had trouble putting hitters away in his rehab start for Class AAA Durham Thursday, Aug. 6. Smyly's fastball was sitting at 91-92 mph last night.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly is working his way back from a pretty serious shoulder injury. He could make a handful of starts before the 2015 season is over, but how effective will he be? He's sure to be a pretty risky FantasyScore option when he returns, depending on the matchup.

Rays | Drew Smyly to make two more rehab starts

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 15:41:21 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Drew Smyly (shoulder) will make at least two more rehab starts, with his next one coming Thursday, Aug. 6.

Fantasy Tip: Smyly has battled his way back into rotation consideration if he can avoid any setbacks in these next two rehab starts. The Rays will probably be very careful with him down the stretch, though, and his fantasy value will likely be shaky because of the nature of his injury. Only consider him for your rotation in a deeper league, and be hesitant to run with him on FantasyScore if he makes it all the way back.
