Texas Rangers RP Sam Dyson will be the closer "in the interim," manager Jeff Banister said Wednesday, May 18.
Fantasy Tip: Dyson is a must-add arm in all fantasy formats. He only has a career 7.5 K/9 through 148 innings, but he has allowed just four runs through 19 innings this season and stands to have significant value for the duration of his stay in the role. The Rangers will provide him with plenty of save opportunities.

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson has been removed from the closer role Wednesday, May 18, with RP Sam Dyson most likely to take over.
Fantasy Tip: Dyson has good numbers (1.89 ERA, 1.11 WHIP), but he doesn't have the swing-and-miss stuff you'd like in a closer with 13 K's in 19 innings. Lefty Jake Diekman could also be an option with a 2.51 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP and 19 K's in 14 1/3 innings. One dark-horse candidate, which may be out of the box, is Derek Holland. He hasn't been the same pitcher after injuries derailed him for a couple of years. Yu Darvish (elbow) is close to returning, and Holland has been brutal as a starter this year. Dyson is an immediate pickup, and Diekman should be owned in AL-only formats. If Holland is dropped from the rotation, he's a sleeper in deep leagues. If you own Tolleson, bench him and hope that he turns it around quickly enough to regain his job.

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson is unavailable in a save situation against the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday, May 15, and manager Jeff Bannister said the team is trying to figure out what is wrong with Tolleson's changeup. Opponents have four hits, including a home run, in 11 at-bats (.364) against the changeup this year. He's only throwing his changeup in the strike zone 50% of the time. Tolleson blew the save Saturday, May 14, and in the process threw his changeup just once. RP Sam Dyson, who threw only one pitch Saturday, is likely to be used in a save situation Sunday if it arises.
Fantasy Tip: Tolleson has been on shaky ground for a bit now, and saves speculators in all leagues should've already been eyeing Dyson. In most cases, especially if you own Tolleson, picking up Dyson before today was already done. In any case, Tolleson's job is not completely lost, but Dyson has a great shot to unseat him in the ninth-inning role if Tolleson's struggles continue.

Texas Rangers RP Sam Dyson struck out one batter without allowing a base runner during a scoreless inning to register his first save of the season during the Rangers' 6-5 win over the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, May 11.
Fantasy Tip: Dyson could be the next man up, if closer Shawn Tolleson sustains an injury or implodes in the role. Dyson is a decent own in deep leagues, too, as he can help your ratios (2.12 ERA and 1.24 WHIP this season) and maybe vulture another save or win pitching in high-leverage situations. However, it is worth noting Tolleson gave way to Dyson Wednesday because the current closer had pitched three of the past four days.

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez will be shut down at around 170 innings this year. He's currently at 139 2/3 innings, so he could be shut down before the season's final month. Fernandez had never pitched above Class A before this season as a 21-year-old. The team could decide to shut SP Jacob Turner down, too, if he shows signs of fatigue. SPs Brad Hand and Brian Flynn could be called up in September to help fill the rotation. SP Sam Dyson is another candidate. It's doubtful SPs Andrew Heaney, Anthony DeSclafini or Justin Nicolino will be recalled from Double-A Jacksonville.
Fantasy Tip: Fernandez, at 8-5 with a 2.45 ERA and 149 strikeouts, is a heavy favorite for NL Rookie of the Year honors. He's been fantastic, but the time to utilize his talents is running out. Just be aware. Any of the young hurlers the Marlins may call up would only be useful for a start or two in deep NL-only leagues. If you're in the running for a fantasy championship, it's probably wise not to rely on them.
