Nationals | A.J. Cole picks up rare three-inning save

Sat, 16 May 2015 05:03:08 -0700

Washington Nationals SP A.J. Cole pitched three scoreless innings to record his first save of the season Friday, May 15. Cole struck out a single batter and issued one walk in the outing.

Fantasy Tip: Cole's recalling to the Nats corresponded with Doug Fister's (forearm) placement on the disabled list Friday. Cole's usage Friday appears to point to Tanner Roark ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) as the replacement for Fister in the rotation. Through 36 career starts, Roark has a 18-11 record with a 2.70 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and a 6.2 K/9. Speculatively adding Roark in deep formats isn't out of the question. However, Cole still could be in line to start. Continue to check back for updates, as the Nationals have won seven of their last nine games, and whoever joins the rotation has value in the majority of fantasy formats.

Nationals | Doug Fister placed on DL

Fri, 15 May 2015 15:35:34 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Doug Fister (forearm) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, May 15, because of forearm tightness. The team also recalled P A.J. Cole from Class AAA Syracuse (N.Y.).

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Fister ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) is dealing with a serious injury, so owners should monitor the situation over the next several days. Tanner Roark ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) and Cole are options to join the starting rotation while Fister is out but probably are not great fantasy options at this point.

Nationals | A.J. Cole not a merry soul after loss

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 20:56:24 -0700

Washington Nationals SP A.J. Cole allowed nine runs - four earned - and nine hits with a walk in just two innings in his major league debut Tuesday, April 28, against the Atlanta Braves. He lasted just 55 pitches in his outing subbing for the injured SP Max Scherzer (thumb).

Fantasy Tip: Cole was pretty awful, but it wasn't all his fault. His defense was equally inept behind him. There will be better days for Cole, but FantasyScore owners need not bother with him until he gets another chance to redeem himself. He's likely headed back to the minors for now.

Nationals | A.J. Cole sent to Syracuse

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 22:18:14 -0700

The Washington Nationals optioned SP A.J. Cole to Triple-A Syracuse Wednesday, March 18.

Fantasy Tip: Cole was in the running for a rotation spot, but the competition was super crowded. He might get a crack at starting sometime this season, but it will likely take an injury or two to a starting pitcher before he is recalled.

Nationals | Make two cuts

Wed, 12 Mar 2014 06:45:49 -0700

The Washington Nationals reassigned SP A.J. Cole to minor-league camp and optioned P Felipe Rivero to Class AA Harrisburg.

Fantasy Tip: Cole is an attractive long-term keeper prospect who's on most top-100 prospect lists; there's an outside chance he could have a cup of coffee in Washington this season. Rivero, a former Tampa Bay Rays asset, has displayed solid peripherals but hasn't pitched above Class A advanced.

Mon, 17 Feb 2014 18:54:16 -0800

Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams has been happy with what he has sen from SP A.J. Cole, who is ranked as the third best prospect on the team by MLB.com. Williams likes the way the ball comes out of Cole's hands. "His body is long and he gets out front. The ball explodes out of his hands. I like it," Williams said Monday, Feb. 17.

Nationals | A.J. Cole likely to start in minors

Mon, 17 Feb 2014 16:03:48 -0800

Washington Nationals P A.J. Cole is almost certain to start the year with Double-A Harrisburg. However, manager Matt Williams has been impressed with Cole so far in camp. "The ball just comes out of his hand really well," the manager said. "It just does. He's a little crossfire (throwing across the body), which is good. For me, he's got the ultimate pitcher's body. It's long and he gets out front and the ball explodes out of his hand. I like it."
