Nationals | Tanner Roark strong once again

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 16:29:39 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark churned out another strong start Thursday, April 28, against the Philadelphia Phillies. He registered seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits, two walks and struck out six. He ended up with a no-decision, however.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Roark has turned back the clock to 2014, when he won 15 ballgames in his first full major league season. He actually might be in even better form right now, as he now holds a 2.03 ERA to go with 30 strikeouts in 31 total innings of work. Additionally, three of his five outings have seen the right-hander yield zero runs in seven innings. He should not be available on any waiver wires, as Roark is dialed in and has potential to win a considerable amount of games while pitching for the Nationals.

Nationals | Tanner Roark baffles Twins

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 13:34:52 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark turned in one of the most dominant pitching performances of the season Saturday, April 23, fanning a career-high 15 over seven innings in a win over the Minnesota Twins.

Fantasy Tip: To put this 121-pitch effort into some perspective, Roark had struck out a total of nine batters over 17 innings in his three previous outings. It also marks only the second time in 52 career starts he has fanned more than seven batters (previous career high was 11 in 2014). Roark should be owned in just about every league already and should provide owners with a fair number of wins this season, although the St. Louis Cardinals are unlikely to roll over as easily as the Twins did in his next scheduled start Friday.

Nationals | Tanner Roark victorious Wednesday

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 18:21:37 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark (1-1) allowed four hits over seven scoreless innings in a victory over the Atlanta Braves Wednesday, April 13, with three walks and four strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Roark was originally scheduled to pitch Thursday, April 14, but moved up in the rotation one day after SP Stephen Strasburg (illness) was scratched. He will make his next start versus the Miami Marlins next week and is worth considering as a second starter in daily fantasy games.

Nationals | Stephen Strasburg scratched

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 11:25:25 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg (illness) is being scratched from his start against the Atlanta Braves with an illness Wednesday, April 13. SP Tanner Roark will start in Strasburg's place.

Fantasy Tip: Bad timing for Stras, as he was set for a nice matchup against the winless Braves. Roark doesn't do anything particularly well but does yield plenty of ground balls and has nice control. That could go a long way as a value play as your second daily starter Tuesday.

Nationals | Washington's rotation outlook

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 15:59:11 -0800

Washington Nationals SPs Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, Tanner Roark and Joe Ross are expected to be locked into the starting rotation this year. SPs Bronson Arroyo and Lucas Giolito could make decisions difficult, though, if they impress in spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Scherzer and Strasburg are fantasy aces without a doubt. Gonzalez provides veteran depth to a pitching staff. Ross has strikeout stuff like his brother Tyson and is a nice sleeper target in deep mixed leagues. Roark should be left for owners in NL-only universes. Giolito is one of the top overall prospects this year and could work his way into the rotation later in the year.

Nationals | Two WAS hurlers battling for No. 5 spot

Sun, 21 Feb 2016 07:07:07 -0800

Washington Nationals SP Bronson Arroyo is expected to compete with SP Tanner Roark for the No. 5 spot in the team's starting rotation during spring training camp.

Fantasy Tip: The 39-year-old Arroyo missed the entire 2015 season recovering from Tommy John surgery but could be a nice bounce-back candidate if he remains healthy. However, he is not guaranteed of making the 25-man roster. Roark would likely be used as a reliever if he does not crack the rotation.

Nationals | Tanner Roark expects to start

Thu, 18 Feb 2016 12:45:58 -0800

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark expects to be in the starting rotation this season. He started 12 games in 2015 compared to 28 relief outings and ended up 4-7 with a 4.38 ERA. Roark was obsessed with lighting up the radar gun as a reliever, but he dialed it back and focused on control later in the year. He is penciled in as the No. 4 or 5 starter in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: 2014 was likely Roark's career peak. He'll need to continue exhibiting fine control to limit damage on long balls, but overall, he profiles as a pretty average starter. Roark is mainly rotation insurance in a bench spot in deep mixed leagues.

Braves | Jace Peterson not playing Tuesday

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 14:19:48 -0700

Atlanta Braves 2B Jace Peterson is not in the lineup Tuesday, Sept. 29, against the Washington Nationals. 2B Daniel Castro is at second in the lineup against Nationals SP Tanner Roark.

Fantasy Tip: Peterson ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) is hitless in 10 at-bats against Roark, hence the decision to give him a night off. Castro ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has a .222 mark against Roark, so he carries little FantasyScore value.

Braves | Cameron Maybin out of Tuesday lineup

Tue, 29 Sep 2015 14:15:49 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Cameron Maybin is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Sept. 29, against the Washington Nationals. OF Michael Bourn is hitting eighth against Nationals SP Tanner Roark.

Fantasy Tip: Maybin ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) appears to be getting a normal night off so the Braves can try different lineups. Bourn ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) is hitting .467 in the last week, so if you're looking to save some cap space he may make a solid addition.

Nationals | Joe Ross moving to 'pen

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 13:37:38 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Joe Ross will move to the bullpen for the rest of the year. SP Tanner Roark will take Ross' spot in the starting rotation. The Nationals saw Ross fatiguing in his last two starts.

Fantasy Tip: This was an expected move as the Nats look to protect Ross' innings total this season. Roark ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) broke out with Washington last year, going 15-10 with a 2.85 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 6.3 strikeouts per nine innings. He's certainly worth a look in deep mixed leagues down the stretch, and he could be a great value pick on FantasyScore in the right matchups.
