Nationals | Tanner Roark solid in start

Mon, 25 May 2015 20:13:38 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark allowed one run on three hits in five innings in a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs Monday, May 25, in his first start of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Roark ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) posted a 2.85 ERA in 31 starts last year, so it should be no surprise he was solid Sunday. If Roark makes another start or two in place of the injured Doug Fister (forearm), he should be a great bargain option at FantasyScore.

Nationals | Tanner Roark stretching out

Fri, 22 May 2015 14:00:12 -0700

Updating a previous report, Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark faced live hitters Friday, May 22, in an effort to stretch out for a start early next week. He is expected to be good for at least 70 pitches, according to manager Matt Williams.

Fantasy Tip: Roark ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) will have fleeting value in deep mixed and NL-only leagues for the duration of his tenure in the starting rotation. He has been extremely successful as a starter in the past, and pitching for a surging ball team helps, too. FantasyScore players have a discount arm on their hands, but pitch counts are never a positive for fantasy upside.

Nationals | Tanner Roark starting early next week

Fri, 22 May 2015 13:38:17 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark will make a start against the Chicago Cubs Monday, May 25, or Tuesday, May 26, according to manager Matt Williams.

Fantasy Tip: Through 36 career starts, Roark ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) has a 18-11 record with a 2.70 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and a 6.2 K/9, and he should be owned in all NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues. He may be on a pitch count for his first start of the season, though, and the Cubs are an admirable offense. However, Chicago also strikes out more than any team in baseball. Roark's value is on the rise, at least in the short term.

Nationals | Tanner Roark could move to bullpen

Sun, 22 Feb 2015 11:53:43 -0800

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark will continue working out as a starter during spring training, although he is likely to be the odd man out when the regular season begins. "If we have to make an adjustment, he's aware of that and he'll make that adjustment," manager Matt Williams said. "Right now, he's going to be one of our six or seven starters and just go from there."

Fantasy Tip: Roark possibly beginning the year in the bullpen is a testament to how strong Washington's starting rotation is. Despite having success as a long reliever in the past, Williams said Roark could be used as a one-inning reliever in late-game situations, which could give him some value in NL-only fantasy leagues.

Sun, 20 Jul 2014 10:36:37 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark (9-6) allowed one run on six hits over seven innings in a victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday, July 19, with one walk and five strikeouts. Roark, who normally depends on his fastball and curveball, relied heavily on his slider during the game. He said he has been able to throw it much harder based on a grip he learned recently from teammate Jordan Zimmermann.

Washington Nationals SP Tanner Roark is scheduled to start Saturday, July 19, against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Nationals | Impressed with Doug Fister

Fri, 11 Apr 2014 15:28:37 -0700

Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams was impressed with SP Doug Fister's (lat) 35-pitch bullpen session Friday, April 11, and Fister didn't report any problems with his side or his right elbow. He threw mostly fastballs and changeups, but also mixed in a few breaking pitches. He'll throw off a mound again in a few days and build up to 50 pitches before facing live hitters and then going on a rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Fister could be back in a few weeks barring a setback, and the Nationals will put him back in their rotation immediately. Tanner Roark is the man likely to lose his rotation gig once Fister is ready, so consider him a short-term option in NL-only leagues.
