Rays | Steven Souza out vs. Rockies

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 15:16:13 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, July 19. OF Oswaldo Arcia is starting in right field and is batting eighth against Colorado Rockies SP Tyler Chatwood.

Fantasy Tip: Arcia has intriguing pop, but he's an all-or-nothing swinger with a .219 average between the Twins and Rays in 48 games. Consider him a deeper sleeper as a boom-or-bust DFS pick tonight with a little more appeal because he's playing at Coors Field. Souza is likely receiving a normal day of rest.

Rays | Brandon Guyer returns to lineup Sunday

Sun, 10 Jul 2016 07:33:46 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Brandon Guyer is back in the starting lineup against Boston Red Sox SP David Price Sunday, July 10, hitting fourth and playing center field. OF Steven Souza is receiving the day off.

Fantasy Tip: Guyer is just 3-for-25 (.120) during the month of July and has never faced Price in his career but may be worth considering as an inexpensive flier in DFS based on the fact that he's batting cleanup.

Rays | Two Rays sit against lefty

Thu, 07 Jul 2016 06:30:12 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B Logan Morrison and OF Corey Dickerson are out of the lineup Thursday, July 7, against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Hector Santiago. OF Steven Souza is hitting cleanup, and 2B Nick Franklin is hitting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Souza has a .263-10-27 line and has upside at the cleanup spot. Franklin has a .303-1-11 line, and he's a low-end option against Santiago in DFS.

Rays | Steven Souza back in the lineup

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 20:48:06 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza returned to the lineup Wednesday, July 6, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim one night after being pulled for lack of hustle. "I was really impressive with the way he handled it," manager Kevin Cash said. "He owned it. He had a lapse. We all have lapses. We'll look to move past it now."

Fantasy Tip: It appears safe to get Souza back into the active fantasy lineup if you reserved him as a precaution. He'll get a chance to play and he likely won't be loafing again anytime soon.

Rays | Steven Souza lifted for loafing

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 18:47:58 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza was lifted early from the game Tuesday, July 5, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The removal was not injury related, but apparently due to a lack of hustle in watching a fly ball which was then misplayed.

Fantasy Tip: It's not likely to be something which lands Souza in the doghouse long term, and he should be back in the lineup Wednesday. However, that's purely speculation, so if you're in a daily fantasy league or normally play him in DFS, you might want to hold off until he has a chance to start and prove himself again.

Rays | Steven Souza back in lineup Saturday

Sat, 02 Jul 2016 10:09:38 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza is back in the starting lineup against Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander Saturday, July 2, batting sixth. In addition, C Curt Casali is batting ninth and starting behind the plate, with C Hank Conger receiving the day off.

Fantasy Tip: Souza is making his first appearance since being activated from the 15-day disabled list Friday, July 1, but he should be avoided in daily fantasy contests until he can make it through at least one full game without experiencing any setbacks. Casali is batting just .149 in 74 at-bats at Tropicana Field this season and is not a great fantasy option.

Rays | Steven Souza set for rehab assignment

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 13:22:19 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza (hip) hit two home runs during a simulated game Thursday, June 30, and is tentatively scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Class A Charlotte Friday, July 1. He also noted the power has returned to his lower body.

Fantasy Tip: Souza's posted a respectable 26 runs, 10 home runs, 25 RBI, three stolen bases with a .255/.315/.443 slash line through 57 games before the hip injury. He should be owned in all deep mixed leagues now that is he close to returning from the disabled list. Check back for updates on his expected return date.

Rays | Steven Souza, Brandon Guyer updates

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 15:24:03 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza (hamstring) took batting practice and ran Tuesday, June 28, but he's not scheduled for a rehab assignment yet. OF Brandon Guyer (hamstring) is playing another rehab game Tuesday but isn't likely to come off the disabled list Wednesday, June 29.

Fantasy Tip: Guyer is obviously closer to a return than Souza, but both could be back by this weekend. Guyer was successful hitting leadoff in his limited opportunities there before his injury and is useful for his modest contributions with the stick in deep mixed and AL-only leagues if he's playing every day. Souza whiffs often but has an intriguing power-speed combination for those in deep mixed affairs. Check to see if either are available on the waiver wire now.

Rays | Brandon Guyer, Steven Souza back soon

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 14:51:46 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OFs Brandon Guyer (hamstring) and Steven Souza (hip) are both expected to return during the current homestand. Guyer makes a rehab start for Class A Charlotte Monday, June 27, and he could rejoin the team during the series against the Boston Red Sox. Souza started running Monday for the first time since his injury.

Fantasy Tip: Both Guyer and Souza should return to starting roles for the Rays when they're ready. Guyer had been productive atop the order for Tampa, but he's mainly attractive in cavernous mixed and AL leagues because he won't contribute greatly in any one category. Souza is an all-or-nothing type with an intriguing power-speed combination.

Rays | Steven Souza visits specialist

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 14:51:16 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza (hip) visited a specialist in Nashville and received a cortisone shot and underwent an MRI exam Monday, June 20. The team is optimistic Souza will return during their next homestand beginning Monday, June 27.

Fantasy Tip: Souza is having a respectable season with 26 runs, 10 home runs, 25 RBI, three stolen bases and a .255/.315/.443 slash line through 57 games. He is a viable starter in deep mixed leagues, so stay tuned for updates as he works his way back from the disabled list.
