Rays | Steven Souza Jr. leaves the yard twice

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 13:50:19 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza Jr. celebrated his 27th birthday in style on Sunday, April 24, clubbing a two-run home run off New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda in the first inning to cap a five-run frame before adding a solo shot in the fifth off Pineda in the fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Souza's power display was the highlight of a five-homer barrage by the Rays. The 27-year-old is riding a bit of a hot streak lately, although he has as many strikeouts as hits (six) over the last four games. Nevertheless, Souza needs to remain in lineups as Tampa Bay begins an eight-game homestand on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles.

Rays | Desmond Jennings, Curt Casali out

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 09:16:13 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Desmond Jennings and C Curt Casali are not in the starting lineup against the New York Yankees Sunday, April 24. OF Corey Dickerson will bat cleanup and play left field, OF Steven Souza Jr. will bat seventh and play right field and C Hank Conger will bat ninth and start behind the plate.

Fantasy Tip: Souza is off to a decent start this year, batting .275 with three home runs and eight RBI in his first 51 at-bats. On the other hand, Conger is just 4-for-22 at the plate and has also struggled defensively, so he should be avoided for the foreseeable future in all formats.

Rays | Steven Souza will not start

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 08:01:29 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza is not in the starting lineup against New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka Saturday, April 23. OF Steve Pearce will start at third base and is batting seventh in the lineup. 3B Evan Longoria will serve as the designated hitter, while OF Corey Dickerson will start in right field.

Fantasy Tip: Pearce is receiving his third straight start and has at least one hit in seven of his last eight games. Pearce could be a cheap sleeper option in some daily fantasy leagues but is not a must-start option.

Rays | Corey Dickerson, Steven Souza Jr. out

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 07:42:50 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Corey Dickerson and Steven Souza Jr. are not in the lineup against Chicago White Sox SP Jose Quintana Sunday, April 17. OF Brandon Guyer is batting second and playing right field, while 1B/OF Logan Morrison is batting sixth and serving as the designated hitter.

Fantasy Tip: Guyer may be worth considering as an inexpensive flier in daily fantasy games because of his career success versus southpaws. Morrison is 2-for-29 with 14 strikeouts to start the season and should be avoided in all fantasy formats.

Rays | Three Tampa regulars out

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 13:26:03 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Corey Dickerson, 1B Logan Morrison and SS Brad Miller are not in the starting lineup against Chicago White Sox left-handed SP Chris Sale Friday, April 15. OF Steven Souza moves to designated hitter, OF Brandon Guyer is in right field and hitting second, 1B Steve Pearce is at first and hitting cleanup and SS Tim Beckham is starting at shortstop and batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Morrison and Miller are both off to terrible starts, and you should consider benching them until they turn it around in traditional formats. Guyer and Pearce have favorable lineups spots tonight but are tough to rely on in daily formats while facing a tough lefty in Sale. Beckham should be ignored in most fantasy formats.

Rays | Steven Souza sitting vs. Tribe

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 14:33:46 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, April 13. OF Brandon Guyer draws the start in right field and is batting seventh against Cleveland Indians SP Carlos Carrasco.

Fantasy Tip: Guyer is useful for his speed in the deepest of AL leagues and daily formats, but he draws a tough matchup against Carrasco and the Indians tonight. It's probably best to look for other options.

Rays | Steven Souza goes deep twice

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 14:42:17 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza clubbed two home runs in a win over the Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday, April 6. Souza had four hits in the game, which tied a career high. He also had two runs scored and four RBI in the game.

Fantasy Tip: We already knew Souza was attractive for his power-speed combination, but injuries and not enough contact made him a disappointment in 2015. He's off to a hot start this year, though, and he should continue to receive regular playing time as a result. If he's out there on the waiver wire, give him a look.

Rays | Steven Souza back in action

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 10:35:38 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza (intercostal) is playing in his first spring game Wednesday, March 9, after dealing with an intercostal strain.

Fantasy Tip: Souza provides a modest power/speed combo for the Rays, but with a bunch of outfielders on roster, his playing time is seriously in question. Plus, the slugger makes very little contact and has high strikeout marks, which makes it tougher for him to utilize his speed. Unless he finds consistent at-bats, he's mainly AL-only fodder.

Rays | Steven Souza might debut Wednesday

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 23:55:09 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza (intercostal) was able to take batting practice Tuesday, March 8, for a third consecutive day on the field, and a fifth straight day overall. He might be able to make his Grapefruit League spring debut Wednesday, March 9.

Fantasy Tip: Souza has been dealing with a strained intercostal muscle. He has plenty of time to get locked in at the plate and be ready for the regular season.

Rays | Steven Souza improving

Fri, 04 Mar 2016 10:09:50 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza (intercostal) went through full drills with the outfielders Friday, March 4, and was also set to take batting practice. If he doesn't suffer any setbacks, Souza is likely to make his spring debut March 10 or 11.

Fantasy Tip: Souza has a modest power/speed combination, which will keep him fantasy relevant in AL-only leagues. But he could become buried on the depth chart in Tampa, and his lack of consistent playing time is worrisome.
