Rays | Steven Souza Jr. homers again

Sun, 31 May 2015 19:38:10 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza Jr. went 3-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored in a 9-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles Sunday, May 31, and he has homered in three straight games.

Fantasy Tip: Despite a poor average, Souza ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has a combination of power and speed that gives him intriguing upside at FantasyScore. He is a high-risk, high-reward play for sure, but for the price, he isn't the worst player to gamble on.

Rays | Steven Souza returns in sixth spot

Fri, 29 May 2015 13:30:52 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza (wrist) is back in the starting lineup and is hitting sixth in the batting order against Baltimore Orioles SP Miguel Gonzalez.

Fantasy Tip: Souza ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) hasn't played since Sunday, and he's hitting only .223 (33-for-148) with seven home runs and 17 RBI for the Rays. His mix of speed and power always makes him worth a selection as a value play on FantasyScore, though. However, you may want to sit him out in this one in his return to action against Gonzalez, who righties are only hitting .227 (22-for-97) against this year.

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza (wrist) is out of the starting lineup again Wednesday, May 27. OF Brandon Guyer is starting in right field and hitting eighth in the batting order against Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez.

Fantasy Tip: Guyer ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) is hitting a respectable .276 (29-for-105) with two home runs and 12 RBI, but he should be left off all FantasyScore rosters while facing King Felix and hitting at the bottom of the order.

Rays | Steven Souza sprains wrist

Mon, 25 May 2015 05:42:34 -0700

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza (wrist) suffered a sprained left wrist against the Oakland Athletics Sunday, May 24, and was wearing a brace after the game. X-rays were negative, and Souza plans to have an MRI Monday, May 25.

Fantasy Tip: Souza ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has been up and down lately, hitting just .208 in May. He remains a cheap source of modest power when he is healthy and would warrant a spot on your disabled list if the Rays place him on theirs. He can be dropped in deep leagues if this injury goes beyond the day-to-day status.

Rays | Steven Souza working on strikeouts

Sat, 23 May 2015 14:23:27 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza Jr. had 63 strikeouts through Friday and was on pace for 239. He is working with Rays hitting coach Derek Shelton to cut down on his strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Souza ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) isn't likely to be demoted because he also happens to hit home runs, and the team can't afford to lose that. Souza is worth the risk thanks to his lower price and his power ability.

Rays | Steven Souza dropped to sixth in order

Thu, 07 May 2015 12:11:13 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza is hitting sixth in the batting order against Texas Rangers SP Nick Martinez Thursday, May 7.

Fantasy Tip: It's unknown if this is a permanent change or a short-term thing, but Souza ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) is hitting only .232 (22-for-95) on the season, including a stretch that has seen him go .167 (4-for-24) with 14 strikeouts since April 29. The Rays are hoping to get the youngster turned around by hitting lower in the lineup, and he'll be an under-the-radar FantasyScore start in the meantime.
