Rays | Steven Souza Jr. leaves the yard twice

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 13:50:19 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays OF Steven Souza Jr. celebrated his 27th birthday in style on Sunday, April 24, clubbing a two-run home run off New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda in the first inning to cap a five-run frame before adding a solo shot in the fifth off Pineda in the fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Souza's power display was the highlight of a five-homer barrage by the Rays. The 27-year-old is riding a bit of a hot streak lately, although he has as many strikeouts as hits (six) over the last four games. Nevertheless, Souza needs to remain in lineups as Tampa Bay begins an eight-game homestand on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles.

Yankees | Michael Pineda roughed up Sunday

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 13:31:30 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda was equal parts good and awful Sunday, April 24, striking out a season-high nine while also giving up seven runs on 10 hits - including four homers - over five frames in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fantasy Tip: The strikeouts continue to increase each start for Pineda, but he has really struggled to keep the ball insider the park at Yankee Stadium so far in 2016, serving up a total of seven long balls in his first and third home outings. The 27-year-old's next two scheduled starts will come against the Boston Red Sox, making him a dicey option at best in all formats.

Yankees | Michael Pineda has best outing of year

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 23:21:29 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda allowed two earned runs, seven hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision Tuesday, April 19, against the Oakland Athletics.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda started out slowly in his first outing against Houston April 6, but he has back-to-back quality starts with no homers allowed and a total of 13 strikeouts in the past two outings. He is a must-start in AL-only fantasy leagues and most mixed formats, especially at home.

Yankees | Michael Pineda to face Jays

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 23:50:52 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda will work against the Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday, April 13. He was 1-0 with a 2.79 ERA in three outings against the Blue Jays last season.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda isn't a bad fantasy option, and he is a nice DFS play as he'll be matched up against the very beatable J.A. Happ.

Yankees | Michael Pineda opens with a dud

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 22:36:50 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda allowed six runs and eight hits in just five innings Wednesday, April 6, against the Houston Astros. Despite the uneven results he was credited with the victory. "I thought his stuff was a little bit inconsistent tonight," manager Joe Girardi said. "He almost got out of that big inning that he had. It was a long inning that he had to sit. That's always my concern when it's a little cold like that."

Fantasy Tip: Pineda didn't bring his best stuff, but the offensive helped him to an undeserved win. That's what happens when you pitch for a contender. Fantasy owners aren't complaining.

Yankees | Michael Pineda to be No. 2 starter

Thu, 31 Mar 2016 18:04:12 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda will start the team's second game of the regular season Wednesday, April 6, against the Houston Astros, according to manager Joe Girardi.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda went 12-10 with a 4.37 ERA in 27 starts last season, with 156 strikeouts in 160 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old right-hander has plenty of upside but has had difficulty remaining healthy. He should be viewed as a SP4 in mixed fantasy leagues.

Yankees | Michael Pineda continues strong start

Sat, 19 Mar 2016 14:43:55 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda yielded a run on four hits and struck out four over as many innings in an exhibition win over the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, March 19.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda has allowed seven hits and one walk while fanning 11 over nine spring innings. The 27-year-old, who went 12-10 with a 4.37 ERA last season, has endured some bad luck injury-wise throughout his career, but should be considered as a strong candidate to put it all together this season if he can remain healthy. Owners should be thrilled to land the former top prospect as their fourth starting pitcher in fantasy.

Yankees | Michael Pineda ready for strong year

Mon, 07 Mar 2016 14:53:37 -0800

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda has impressed the Yankees with his conditioning in spring training, and the right-hander allowed two singles while striking out three in two scoreless innings in his first spring start Monday, March 7. "I feel strong, my body's in good shape," Pineda said. "Every year, I'm working harder and harder. I learn from every year. ... Pitching the whole year is very important for me so I can pitch a lot of innings, winning games and helping my team. That's what I'm looking for."

Fantasy Tip: Pineda's 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings and 1.2 walks per nine innings didn't match his 4.37 ERA this year. Better luck stranding runners will help him become a fine sleeper pick in the middle rounds as your third or fourth starting pitcher.

Yankees | Michael Pineda hopes for 200 innings

Sun, 14 Feb 2016 12:54:48 -0800

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda said his goal is to pitch over 200 innings this season and hopes to be healthy for the entire season. "My biggest goal this season is, No. 1, try to be healthy for pitching the whole year," Pineda said. "I'm a young guy, but every year you're getting older. I'm 27 right now, so I'm getting one year older. I'm a young guy, but every year you have to learn how to get better and better."

Fantasy Tip: Pineda was able to make 28 starts last season and finished with a 9-10 record and a 3.74 ERA. Pineda should be near the top of the Yankees rotation this season and could be a middle- to late-round option in most mixed leagues.

Yankees | Michael Pineda avoids arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 12:39:46 -0800

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda re-signed a one-year contract to avoid arbitration Friday, Jan. 15. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda struggled down the stretch last season with a 4.93 ERA through seven starts in September, which led to a 4.37 mark for the season. However, Pineda's .332 BABIP, 3.34 FIP, 8.7 K/9 and 1.2 BB/9 suggest there may have been some tough luck along the way. View him as end-of-the-rotation fantasy arm to target in the late middle rounds of drafts this spring.
