Yankees | Michael Pineda won't be punished

Fri, 11 Apr 2014 12:15:58 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda will not be suspended by Major League Baseball for having what looked like pine tar on his right hand during his outing Thursday, April 10. "The umpires did not observe an application of a foreign substance during the game and the issue was not raised by the Red Sox," read an MLB statement on the issue. "Given those circumstances, there are no plans to issue a suspension, but we intend to talk to the Yankees regarding what occurred." Pineda denied that he used pine tar while pitching and said he had dirt on his hand.

Yankees | Michael Pineda accused of using foreign substance

Fri, 11 Apr 2014 08:25:09 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda was caught with a foreign substance on the palm of his right hand during his outing against the Boston Red Sox Thursday, April 10, and Red Sox manager John Farrell wasn't aware of it until the fourth inning. Pineda was saying the substance on his hand was dirt, and when he came out for the fifth inning, the substance had been wiped clean. "Again, a foreign substance is illegal, but by the time we became aware of it, it was gone," Farrell said. Pineda recorded the win by allowing four hits and striking out seven over six innings.

Fantasy Tip: The umpires were unaware and the Red Sox never alerted them about the issue, so event though it's against MLB rules to use foreign substances on the mound, it's unlikely Pineda will receive any type of suspension as a result.

Yankees | Michael Pineda makes it back

Sat, 05 Apr 2014 18:37:38 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda (shoulder) made his first major league start Saturday, April 5, since being acquired from the Seattle Mariners in January 2012. "I'm so excited today, my first game for the New York Yankees," Pineda said. He allowed five hits over six innings with no walks and five strikeouts, tossing 58 of his 83 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda looked like such a promising prospect in Seattle, but a shoulder injury caused him to miss two seasons in the majors. If he can bounce back to his early form, he could very well re-emerge as a must-start in all fantasy leagues. Monitor his next start before sacrificing a roster spot in anything but deeper AL-only leagues at this point.

Yankees | Michael Pineda confirmed as fifth starter

Tue, 25 Mar 2014 13:07:19 -0700

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi confirmed that SP Michael Pineda will be the team's No. 5 starter.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda's velocity and stuff were very sharp in camp this spring, earning him the job. Now that he appears to be fully past his shoulder issues, Pineda could be a real steal as a late-round flier in mixed universes.

Yankees | Michael Pineda the favorite for No. 5 rotation spot?

Tue, 18 Mar 2014 14:46:01 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda gave up four hits and no runs while striking out five in 4 1/3 innings Tuesday, March 18, and it appears the No. 5 rotation spot is his to lose this spring. Pineda consistently hit 85 mph with his slider Tuesday and was between 90 and 92 mph with his fastball, and he was efficient with his pitches. Pineda hasn't allowed a run in nine spring innings. "Aggressive with every pitch. His slider is amazing. The ball was cutting really good. The fastball has some life so it's going to help a lot. And the changeup is great; he throws it right on the plate," C Francisco Cervelli said.

Manager Joe Girardi still wants to see Pineda stretched to the sixth or seventh innings, though, before it's official that he has a rotation spot locked up. However, Girardi said Pineda doesn't look like a pitcher coming off a serious injury. Pineda says he feels like he's getting stronger in each outing, and he won't rule out that he will touch the high-90s again. He's competing with SPs David Phelps, Adam Warren and Vidal Nuno, who each have two spring starts left.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda has come at an extreme discount in drafts because of his serious shoulder injury. With all signs pointing to a bounce-back, don't be surprised to see him shooting up draft boards.

Yankees | Michael Pineda favorite for final spot?

Thu, 13 Mar 2014 12:07:18 -0700

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda strengthened his bid for the final rotation spot by tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings Thursday, March 13, giving up three hits and striking out five of the 11 batters he faced. However, he hit 92 mph with his fastball just twice, with most of his heaters clocking in in the 89-90 mph range. Pineda threw strikes, though, and his breaking pitch was sharp. Manager Joe Girardi hinted that Pineda might be the favorite for the No. 5 spot. Girardi also said the team doesn't expect Pineda to reach 30 starts or 200 innings in 2014 since he hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2011.

Fantasy Tip: Pineda is a bit of a sleeper candidate because of the fact that he didn't pitch at all in pinstripes last season. He's worthy of a late-round gamble in mixed leagues, but keep an eye on his velocity early in the season.

Yankees | Fifth starter job will be hotly contested

Mon, 10 Feb 2014 18:34:34 -0800

The fifth starter job for the New York Yankees will be a battle between SP Vidal Nuno, David Phelps, Michael Pineda and Adam Warren. Pineda declined to handicap the race when asked Monday, Feb. 10. "I don't know. I'm not really paying attention (to whether) I'm the favorite or not," Pineda said. "I'm focused on my job and doing good and making it through spring training."

Fantasy Tip: Normally the fifth starter job has limited fantasy appeal in most leagues, but the winner of the job in New York has a little more value due to their top-to-bottom lineup and strong offensive support. The situation will be a fun battle to watch during camp.

Mon, 10 Feb 2014 18:33:41 -0800

"I'm the same Michael Pineda. I'm 100 percent now and my body is in good shape." He is battling for a rotation spot behind SPs CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, Masahiro Tanaka and Ivan Nova.
